Celebrating a New Family Tradition at SMCS: The Corral Story
From the Catholic values and principles embedded throughout all programming to the welcome reception of our Admissions Department, the Corral family quickly learned that St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) would be the perfect fit for their sons.
Juan Corral began his SMCS journey in September 2024 as a Grade 9 student, but his family’s history with the school began almost a decade ago with his two older brothers, Jose ’21 and Ignacio ’23.
“We were introduced to SMCS in 2016, thanks to a recommendation from a close family friend whose values we trust. Upon touring the school and learning about its outstanding academic programme and strong Catholic moral foundation, we were confident it was the right choice for our family—even though the commute posed a challenge due to the distance from our home,” says Maria Corral, Juan’s mom. “Now, eight years later, two of our children have proudly graduated from SMCS, and our third is thriving there. Juan is deeply engaged in the academics, clubs, and Catholic values-based culture, as well as the friendships he has formed. Our youngest, currently in Grade 5, eagerly anticipates continuing the family tradition and following in their footsteps at SMCS.”
The amazing experiences that Juan’s older brothers had at SMCS prompted him to also apply.
“I wanted to be part of the same tradition and benefit from everything that St. Mike’s has to offer,” he says.
Since day one of Grade 9, Juan’s parents have witnessed how Juan has fully embraced all the opportunities the school has to offer.
“He enjoys being part of several clubs, appreciates the excellent resources available in the school library, and takes pride in his independence as he commutes by the GO train and the TTC subway,” says his dad, Emilio Corral. “The supportive environment at SMCS has made his experience fulfilling and memorable.”
Juan adds, “My experience has been great so far! I’m part of the Reading Olympics, serve as a Student Ambassador to welcome new students and families, and play in the NY Trip band. I enjoy participating in these activities and feel supported by my teachers and peers.”
Before deciding on SMCS, the Corral family also looked closely at other schools and the variety of programmes they offered.
“We explored other schools closer to our home that offered International Baccalaureate or AP programmes and had strong academic reputations,” Maria says. “However, what set SMCS apart was its emphasis on building character, instilling Catholic values, and creating a sense of brotherhood among students. The heartfelt recommendations we received from alumni, current families, and friends also played a significant role in our choice.”
“What stood out to me was the size of the school, which makes it feel like a big community, and its ability to prepare students for university and life,” says Juan. “The opportunities for personal and academic growth are unmatched.”
Juan’s parents maintained that, ultimately, it was Juan’s decision to choose SMCS.
“We believe choosing a school should be a family decision, so we ensured Juan and all our sons had a voice in the process. While we provided guidance and shared our insights, they ultimately made their own decisions, knowing that they would be the ones commuting daily and embracing the school experience.”
Leading up to making their final decision, the Corral family attended many admissions events to get a feel for SMCS.
“We participated in a variety of events, including Homecoming, Christmas and spring recitals and plays, welcome breakfasts for new families, and private guided tours,” says Emilio. “These experiences allowed us to see the school’s culture and Catholic values in action and feel part of the community from the very beginning.”
The Corral family encourages prospective families interested in sending their sons to SMCS to thoroughly explore the school by attending these events and speaking with current families and alumni to get a better sense of the community.
“We are deeply grateful to be part of the SMCS community and continue to be impressed by the school’s commitment to academic excellence and character development. It’s been truly a privilege to watch our children thrive here and grow into well-rounded individuals, becoming St. Michael’s men,” Maria adds.
“I am proud to be a St. Michael’s man,” says Juan. “I’m excited to continue growing, learning, and making memories at SMCS.”
