    Christmas Concerts to Usher in the Season of Advent

    The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Music Department’s annual Christmas Concert series will feature more than 250 students representing Grades 7-12. The students will take the stage in the Centre for the Arts theatre to showcase the fruits of their efforts over the first term.

    “It is always fulfilling to see the culmination of our first term in-class and rehearsal work on display at the Christmas Concerts,” says James Oatt, Head of Music. “The evening marks the debut performance of our newest student-musicians in Grade 8 and Grade 9 on an SMCS stage and an opportunity for the entire SMCS community to celebrate and usher in the wonderful season of Advent.”

    Here are five fast facts about what to expect at the November 26, 28, and December 3 performances:

    • A performance of A Christmas Carol by the Sr. Concert Band narrated by none other than faculty member Dr. Matthew Doyle.
    • A thrilling arrangement of theme music for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest’ performed by the Sr. Concert Band and synced to a video of movie highlights.
    • The senior concert Band and senior jazz Ensemble, Big Blue, will host a community school educational concert for Holy Rosary and Hillcrest Community School.
    • Faculty members, Christopher Plock and Noel Di Tosto ’99 will lead a small student ensemble performing some jazz standards and a Christmas classic, offering some audience participation.
    • The finale of the November 28 concert will feature the Gr. 10 Band performing the Christmas classic “All I Want For Christmas is You”.

    November 25 – Community School Educational Concert by Sr. Concert Band and the Sr. Jazz Ensemble
    November 26 at 7 p.m. – Sr. Concert Band, SMCS Jazz Collective, SMCS Drumline
    November 28 at 7 p.m. – Sr. Jazz Ensemble, Gr. 9 Beginner Band, Gr. 9 Advanced Band, Gr. 10 Band
    December 3 at 5 p.m. – Sr. Concert Band & Gr. 8 Band
    December 5 – Advent in the Courtyard (Sr. Jazz, Sr. Concert Band, and a choir of members of Footloose)
