Moot Court: Longstanding Tradition Marks 22nd Year

St. Michael’s College School proudly hosted its 22nd Annual Moot Court, a longstanding tradition that continues to challenge and inspire students through experiential learning. The event brought together senior law students to participate in a simulated legal trial where they assumed the roles of lawyers.

In preparation for the event, students dedicated weeks to researching legal arguments, studying case law, and crafting their opening and closing statements. During the simulation, participants presented their cases before a panel of judges, demonstrating strong communication skills, logical reasoning, and the ability to think on their feet.

This year’s moot court featured a compelling case that sparked thoughtful debate and critical analysis. Students had to work collaboratively in legal teams, examine evidence, and cross-examine witnesses, replicating the structure and intensity of a real courtroom. Their professionalism and composure were on full display, reflecting the strength of the school’s academic and character education.

The event not only enhanced students’ understanding of the justice system but also fostered confidence, leadership, and public speaking skills. Many students noted that the experience deepened their interest in law, advocacy, and civic engagement.

“Participating in the Moot Court Competition was a truly a unique and special experience that challenged me to think critically,” says Declan Castaldo, Grade 12, this year’s Top Oralist and recipient of the Shaughnessy Cup. “It provided me with a sense of what being a lawyer looks like, as well as boosted my confidence in my ability to debate and argue in a professional environment.”

Now in its 22nd year, the Moot Court remains a hallmark of the St. Michael’s experience—blending intellectual challenge with real-world application. It continues to highlight the importance of student voice, critical inquiry, and ethical reflection in education.

Congratulations to all the participants, faculty mentors, and adjudicators who made this year’s event such a success. The 22nd Annual Moot Court was more than a competition—it was a celebration of learning, leadership, and the pursuit of justice.
