New Activities Highlight Grade 8 Winter Camp
Grade 8 students were fortunate to receive a true winter camp experience during their outdoor and experiential education camp that took place the first week back at school.
“Camp was great – we had real winter weather for the first time in a few years with lots of snow,” says David Lee, vice principal. “The boys enjoyed the winter activities.”
The four-day annual experience for Grade 8 students takes place at Camp Wanakita every January in Haliburton and is facilitated by outdoor education company, ALIVE Outdoors.
Students had the opportunity to experience activities such as hiking, high ropes, snowshoeing, a cooking competition, Arctic and Inuit games, tubing, and more. New activities this year included a night hike and Nordic skiing across the frozen lake!
“Although many do participate in winter sports like hockey and skiing or snowboarding, many have never had the chance to walk across a lake lit by candles in the dark or learn about night vision or using the rest of our senses in the dark,” says Lee.
“The main goals are always to learn more about themselves and others and grow into better versions of themselves.”
