Safe Officer
Full-time, permanent position
Your commitment: Full-time position working throughout the year in a school setting.
Based on a 35-hour work week.
Shift work Monday to Friday:
- 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
- 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.,
- 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed and arranged in advance.
Work Location: Role is on-site at the school on Bathurst St. and St. Clair Ave. W. in Toronto, unless an event or competition dictates otherwise.
Salary Range: $50,000–$55,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
Compensation: Remuneration includes a comprehensive benefits and vacation package and access to participate in the organization’s defined contribution pension programme.

Position Available:
Working in a team setting, the Safe Officer is a key contributor to the ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of students, employees, and visitors to the school. This role is often the first and last trusted adult students see at school every day.
Duties include:
- Offers a first point of contact for students, visitors, and facility renters, providing a friendly and informed response to inquiries
- Develops an ongoing rapport with students and provides assistance as required, such as helping with lost and found items and locker issues
- Secures premises and personnel by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; inspecting buildings, equipment, and access points; permitting entry
- Prevents losses and damages by reporting irregularities, informing violators of policy and procedures, and removing trespassers
- Completes accurate daily reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities on time
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency situations, including building evacuation, threats of violence, and trespassing concerns
- Responds to student behaviour concerns, including vaping, smoking, and bullying
- Controls traffic by directing drivers and enforcing parking policies
- Performs security checks with patrols and security cameras
- Provides crowd control as needed (events, meetings, theatre productions, sporting events, etc.)
- Assists with coordinating school programs as needed (school parking, issuing student cards, etc.)
- Works closely with school administration and facilities team to assist with day-to-day issues as they arise
- Provides First Aid and CPR when needed
- Assists students, employees, contractors, and visitors with adhering to SMCS protocols as required
What you bring to this role:
- A commitment to the vocation of Catholic education as it is embodied in the tradition of the Basilian Fathers and the mission and vision of St. Michael’s College School
- Minimum five years’ experience working in a security setting
- Experience working with youth in a community setting, such as at a camp or as a coach, is an asset
- Licenced under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act is an asset
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent communication skills, including reporting skills
- Reliable, calm in an emergency, and uses good judgment
- Able to cope with various physical demands of work (walking, standing, etc.)
- Motivated team player who can work with minimal supervision
- Ability to complete administrative processes and procedures
- Computer skills – Office 365, including basic skills in Excel and Word, ability to navigate databases as needed
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality in all interactions
- Availability to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends) as determined, planned in advance
- Adheres to established processes and procedures
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Security Manager or their designate
- Ability to lift 40 lb. on a regular basis
- Valid First Aid/CPR certificate is an asset
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence with clean driving abstract is an asset
