Setting the Stage for Career Day 2026

St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) is gearing up for the 22nd Annual Grade 11 Career Day scheduled for Tuesday, January 27.

SMCS Career Day

“The day continues to offer a student-centred experience designed to reflect the realities of today’s evolving world of work,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, community engagement and learning lead. “The focus remains on helping students explore career pathways, ask meaningful questions, and reflect on their own strengths, interests, and goals as they consider next steps beyond high school.”

Career Day 2026 will follow a familiar format used over the past few years to promote interaction, communication, and diversity.

Morning keynote speaker Rob Nickerson will kick off the day with an interactive session for all Grade 11 students focusing on improvisation, communication, and critical thinking. Nickerson is best known as a pioneer in using improvisation as a teaching tool in non-traditional applications.

“Through Rob’s hands-on activities, students will be encouraged to think on their feet, collaborate with peers, and recognize the importance of strong communication skills across all fields, including business, science, trades, arts, and entrepreneurship,” adds Lumsden.

During the afternoon session, 12 presenters from a wide range of industries will host roundtable discussions, allowing students to rotate through and engage with multiple professionals and gain exposure to diverse perspectives in a short period.

“These sessions expose our students to diverse industries, educational backgrounds, and career trajectories,” says Lumsden. “Rather than emphasizing a single ‘right’ path, presenters will share how careers often unfold through unexpected opportunities, transferable skills, and lifelong learning.”
