SMCS Accounting Students Take Experiential Learning to Notre Dame
Grade 11 and 12 accounting students at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) recently embarked on an unforgettable experiential education trip to the University of Notre Dame (ND). The trip was designed to provide them with a unique opportunity to experience one of the most prestigious business schools and athletic institutions in the United States.

“The trip was more than a simple campus visit; it was an inspirational journey that highlighted the value of academic excellence and Catholic values while encouraging our students to think critically about their future paths,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, Community Engagement and Learning Lead and trip coordinator.
Their trip began with a tour of the historic 182-year-old campus, where the students marveled at Notre Dame’s stunning architecture, including the iconic Golden Dome and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. A guided visit to the Mendoza College of Business was a highlight, offering insights into world-class business programmes and networking opportunities available at the university. Business faculty members shared invaluable perspectives on business education, inspiring the students to aim high in their academic and professional aspirations.

“Our trip to Notre Dame was amazing. From tours of the school to the basketball game, I learned a lot about university life at the school,” says Gavin Kelly, Grade 11. “It has inspired me to open my eyes to applying to American schools. I would 100% do it again.”
The trip also included a taste of Notre Dame’s vibrant sports culture, including taking in an NCAA Division I basketball game between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Boston College Eagles. The electrifying atmosphere of the arena and the dedication of the athletes showcased the spirit and pride of the university’s athletic tradition.
“During our three-day experience at Notre Dame, we explored the campus, learned about its academic programmes, and immersed ourselves in its rich traditions,” says Patrick Trainor, Grade 11. “The interactive tours gave me a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of the Notre Dame community.”

Students also had the chance to interact with SMCS alumni and current ND students Anthony Tsiantis ’22, Carson Weber ’24, Santiago Patricio ’22, and Richie Patricio ’24, who shared personal experiences and advice focused on the trip’s emerging theme of leadership, community involvement, and resilience in achieving one’s goals.
During the visit, the students had the privilege of meeting Rev. Robert A. Dowd, the president of the University of Notre Dame.
“This unique opportunity provided our students with insights into the university’s vision and leadership,” says Lumsden. “It was an inspiring moment that added a personal touch to the experience, making the visit even more memorable and impactful.

“Our Notre Dame experience left our group with both lessons and memories that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact for years to come.”
