<h1>SMCS Student Receives ‘Above and Beyond’ Recognition by U of T</h1>
At St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), learning often reaches beyond the classroom. For Cruz Molina, Grade 12, that meant taking part in a design programme that challenged both his creativity and persistence—earning him some well-deserved recognition.

Molina recently received the ‘Above and Beyond’ award through the Building Black Success Through Design (BBSD) programme, run by the University of Toronto. The three-month programme introduces students to architecture and creative design through a structured, hands-on process, where participants attend weekly sessions, work with mentors, and develop a final concept tied to a real community space. Students choose between an architecture or creative arts cohort depending on their interests.
“It was an honour to be part of the architecture cohort and see the power space holds over the development and success of individuals,” says Molina. “Both age and ethnicity are the factors that open and close doors to education, status, and simply the skills that would allow one to reach the goals they’re aspiring to achieve.”
Over the course of 12 weeks, Molina attended weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. Mid-week sessions featured guest speakers from across the design industry, while Saturdays were dedicated to hands-on work where he developed drawings, refined his floor plan, and built a physical model with guidance from mentors.
The programme began with a visit to the Wildseed Centre, which opened in July 2021, and became the focus of each student’s final project. The space is rooted in community, activism, and Black artistic expression, and students were asked to design something that would contribute meaningfully to that environment. The new space sought to overcome discrimination and foster activism and art as means of equality. Mentees had the opportunity to be part of a positive change that followed the theme of ‘belonging’.
Working in the architecture cohort, Molina was tasked with creating his own design intervention for the site. He chose to develop an amphitheatre-style gathering space—something that could be used for storytelling, conversation, and shared experiences. The idea was to create a space where people could come together, feel included, and connect with one another.
From a technical standpoint, the project required more than just a concept. Molina’s design relied heavily on geometric planning, using circles and arches to shape the amphitheatre. That meant working through precise radius calculations and spatial layout decisions to make sure everything fit and functioned properly. He also prioritized accessibility, incorporating an open central area so the space could be used by people of all abilities.
Beyond the core structure, Molina expanded the scope of his work. While the assignment only required a single intervention, he designed the entire surrounding floor plan to support how the space would be used. Along the way, he encountered layout and overcrowding challenges and had to adjust his design multiple times to make it work. He also added a featured skylight, bringing in natural light and tying it to the broader theme of hope and openness within the space.

“I was very pleased to hear that Cruz was recognized with the BBSD Above and Beyond award,” says Norah Higgins, guidance counsellor. “His mentor recognized Cruz’s commitment to design, his strong work ethic, and his willingness to keep pushing through failure to achieve success. Cruz is a humble, genuine, and intellectually curious student who cares deeply about his community and finding a sense of belonging. His success in this programme reflects Cruz’s growth both as a student of design and as a St. Michael’s Man.”
What stood out most was how he approached the process. Molina consistently refined his work as the programme progressed. His design didn’t come together all at once—it developed through repetition, problem-solving, and a willingness to rework ideas when they weren’t landing.
That level of effort is what the ‘Above and Beyond’ award is meant to recognize. It’s given to a student who not only completes the project but also exceeds baseline expectations. Molina’s combination of technical detail, expanded scope, and persistence made him a clear choice.
“I was honoured to complete the programme with the &#8216;Above and Beyond&#8217; award, which was presented to an individual who went beyond the expectations and truly put the time, effort, and admiration into their intervention,” adds Molina. “I feel I earned recognition for my complex design, which was challenging and time-consuming. Mentors witnessed me fail, but I continued to move forward with more precision. I feel what made it most evident was my persistent attendance, ongoing questions, and participation.”
The experience left a clear impression on Molina, who plans to continue exploring architecture programmes at Carleton University and the University of British Columbia. He came away with a stronger interest in architecture and a better understanding of the impact of thoughtful design. It gave him a clearer sense of how architecture can influence the way people experience a space—how it can bring people together, support community, and shape everyday interactions.
“Truly, this experience deepened my passion for architecture as I realized space holds a severe impact on well-being, success, and the development of future generations. I learned how I can shape how people feel, connect, and move through a space.”

<h1>The Addams Family Coming to SMCS</h1>
For the first time in over a decade, the St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Drama Department will present The Addams Family for their annual spring production.
“Continuing the decades-long tradition of musical theatre excellence here at SMCS, I am excited to have the team of Jade Trichilo (director and choreographer), Brad Harrison ’02 (musical director) and Stephanie Grinton-Lindsay (technical director) return this year to lead the creative team for this production,” says Jamie Oatt, Head of the Music Department. “The students have been flourishing on stage throughout the rehearsal process as they bring this truly entertaining story to life. In addition, new to our music faculty this year, Mark De La Cruz ’98 brings his piano skills to the fore as he performs with our outstanding pit orchestra.”

The show embraces the wackiness of every family, featuring a classic conflict: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. She’s sworn her father, Gomez, to secrecy, forcing him to do the unthinkable—hide it from his wife, Morticia. It all comes to a head during one chaotic dinner party where two very different worlds collide.
Plans for the production began in June of 2025, followed by auditions in October, and rehearsals beginning in early November. The creative vision for the set, guided by the artistic input of our long-standing set designer Matthew Gyulay ’84, began in the summer, and construction commenced in January. Now, almost 10 months later, the show is ready to hit the stage on April 9.

<h1>DECA Students Advance to International Stage</h1>
The 2025-26 rendition of the St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) DECA Club was memorable, filled with effort, growth, and success, and will top off the year by sending two members to showcase their prowess on the international stage.
DECA is an international organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs through real-world business challenges, helping students develop skills in communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

This year, SMCS welcomed over 30 students from Grades 10 to 12 into the club, who participated in regional and provincial competitions, where they role-played and competed in case studies across business categories such as marketing, finance, and entrepreneurship.
“From early preparation sessions to competition days, the focus always remained on pushing each other to improve and strive for excellence,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, community engagement and learning lead. “More importantly, students supported one another every step of the way, creating a team environment built on trust and shared goals. This sense of community played a major role in the success and overall experience of the group.”
Throughout their competitions, students were challenged to step outside of their comfort zones and engage in real-world business scenarios that required critical thinking and the ability to perform under pressure.
“One of the most noticeable outcomes of this year’s programme was the growth in student confidence,” adds Lumsden. “Many students entered DECA unsure of their abilities, but through consistent practice and exposure to competition, they developed the confidence to speak and present with purpose. They learned to think on their feet and represent themselves professionally. These are skills that will serve them well not only in future competitions, but in their academic and professional journeys.”

In April, two Grade 11 club members, Shelain Fernando and Arjun Sivakumar, will represent SMCS at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), marking the first time in over 10 years that our school has reached this level of competition.
&#8220;DECA has been instrumental in my growth as an aspiring entrepreneur, honing my skills in business planning and investor pitching,” says Sivakumar. “Qualifying for the ICDC in Atlanta is a major milestone, providing a global stage to further our ambitions.&#8221;
Fernando adds, “DECA has given me the opportunity to build meaningful connections with students that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. From competing at provincials in my first year to becoming chapter president and qualifying for ICDC, my journey reflects growth, made possible by the support and foundation built by those before me.”
The DECA ICDC will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, from April 25 to April 28, with over 15,000 finalists from around the world competing.
“DECA continues to be about more than competition—it’s about developing a mindset of growth and perseverance,” says Lumsden. “This year’s group has set a high standard and laid a strong foundation for the future.”

<h1>Inspiring Young Alumni: Catching up with Connor Emeny ’14</h1>
St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) is proud to feature Connor Emeny ’14, a dynamic young alumnus whose relentless pursuit of excellence has taken him across the globe—literally.
From the yellow brick halls of St. Mike’s to completing an Iron-distance triathlon on all seven continents, Emeny has transformed discipline, resilience, and big dreams into a global platform as an athlete, author, and keynote speaker.

Where are you in your career?
Today, I’m a full-time keynote speaker, athlete, and <a href="https://www.connoremeny.com/#book" target="_blank">author</a>. My presentations focus on teamwork, leadership, and resilience—lessons drawn from my lived experience becoming the first person in the world to complete an Iron-distance triathlon on all seven continents.
My journey is also the subject of an upcoming feature-length documentary, Chasing Antarctica, which captures the seemingly impossible quest to accomplish a world-first feat and the many roadblocks I overcame along the way.
How would you describe your time at the school?
I attended SMCS from Grade 7 through 12, graduating in 2014. During my time at the school, I immersed myself in co-curriculars and athletics, focusing primarily on hockey and cross country.
I always felt surrounded by greatness. Sharing a gym class with Olympian Justyn Knight ’14 and playing hockey alongside NHL player Jake Evans ’14 set a powerful tone. The calibre of talent around me pushed me to elevate my own standards.
The talent was top notch. That calibre of students encouraged me to be better.
Supported by dedicated teachers and coaches, I built relationships that continue to this day—proof of the lasting brotherhood that defines the St. Michael’s experience.

How have you been involved with SMCS since graduating?
In 2024, I returned to SMCS to compete in the Archangel’s Den Alumni Entrepreneur Contest and took home first place. That win helped propel my expedition to Antarctica and accelerate production of Chasing Antarctica.
How did SMCS prepare you for and propel you into life?
I believe deeply in the principle: to whom much is given, much is expected. It was a privilege to attend St. Michael’s, and I credit many of my professional connections to relationships first formed in those hallways.
I actively try to pay it forward—introducing members of the SMCS community within the business world, supporting younger alumni as they navigate life after graduation, and staying connected through alumni events.
As a keynote speaker, I frequently cross paths with fellow alumni and proudly share stories of my early days at St. Mike’s—a small kid with big dreams. Many of my closest friends are SMCS graduates, and this year alone I’ll be celebrating three of their weddings.

How do you live out the Basilian motto of Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge?
As a former student-athlete, I vividly remember our hockey team’s motto: “Relentless pursuit of victory.” That mindset continues to guide me today.
The Basilian motto, Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge, resonates deeply in my work:

<li>Discipline is foundational—showing up every single day, especially when you don’t feel like it.</li>
<li>Knowledge comes from experience, setbacks, and constant learning.</li>
<li>Goodness is reflected in how I serve others through inspiration and connection.</li>
</ul>
Learning to show up every day is what separates the best from the rest.
What are some of your plans for the future?
We are releasing a feature-length documentary titled Chasing Antarctica this year, which shares the seemingly impossible quest of a world-first feat and all the roadblocks it took to make it happen.
How are you being the best for the world through your work and education?
I was recently named one of <a href="https://bcbusiness.ca/business/general/bcbusiness-30-under-30-class-of-2026/" target="_blank">BCBusiness’ 30 Under 30</a>, recognizing my impact on Vancouver’s community and business landscape. But my greater mission reaches beyond accolades.
My goal is to inspire one million dreamers. The world needs us now more than ever.
Through storytelling, endurance sport, and authentic leadership, I challenge audiences to think bigger, push further, and commit fully to their ambitions.
Do you have any advice for current students?
If you have a dream—go all in on it.
It’s not the titles you receive, but the impact you make and who you become along the way that truly matter.

Andrew McGinnis, a Grade 12 St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) student, is heading out east this fall to continue his student-athlete journey with Dalhousie University’s football team.

“I chose Dalhousie University because it allows me to combine my interest in business with my commitment to football,” says McGinnis. “Being part of the Dalhousie football team gives me the chance to continue competing at a high level while developing important skills like teamwork, discipline, and leadership.”

McGinnis looks forward to the co-op component of the commerce programme, where he’ll gain hands-on experience by applying what he’s learning in the classroom to real-world business settings.
“Dalhousie’s strong academics, combined with athletics and practical learning, made it the right choice for me as I work toward my goals,” he adds.
At SMCS, McGinnis began playing for the Kerry Blues Football team in Grade 9, but his passion for the sport started in Grade 5 with the Toronto Flag Football League.
“Over that time, the sport became more than just a game to me, it became something I was genuinely passionate about,” says McGinnis. “Football taught me the value of commitment, hard work, and pushing myself both physically and mentally. Being part of the team also allowed me to build strong connections with my teammates and coaches, creating friendships and memories that I will carry with me beyond high school. My SMCS experience helped shape who I am and reinforced my desire to play football at the university level.”
“Andrew McGinnis is a great player with outstanding character,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, Sr. Kerry Blues coach and community engagement and learning lead. “He brings leadership, work ethic, and a positive attitude every day, and there’s no doubt he’ll do very well at Dalhousie university.”
Outside of football, McGinnis competes on the school’s Ultimate team in the spring and is one of the moderators of the Guitar Club. The dedicated student-athlete has also made the honour roll almost every year during his time at SMCS, including Grades 7, 8, 9, and 11.
“SMCS prepared me to succeed as a student-athlete by teaching me how to balance academics with athletics from an early age,” he says. “Being part of the football programme required strong time management, discipline, and accountability, especially during the season. At the same time, SMCS emphasized the importance of academics, which helped me stay focused and organized in the classroom. The support from teachers and coaches encouraged me to set high standards for myself and to take responsibility for both my schoolwork and my role on the team. This environment helped me develop the skills and mindset needed to succeed as a student-athlete and prepared me well for the demands of university life.”
