<h1>SMCS Soccer Standout Commits to Stanford University</h1>
A star on the field and in the classroom, St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Grade 12 student Tim Fortier will be trading in his blue Azzurri jersey for the Cardinal red of Stanford University this fall.
Fortier has officially committed to the prestigious California-based Division I school and will join a Cardinal soccer programme that routinely contends for NCAA championships, while studying in Stanford’s interdisciplinary human biology programme.

“I chose Stanford because I was looking for a university with world-class academics combined with an excellent soccer programme,” says Fortier. “Since Stanford is a top academic university globally, and their programme is always competing for the national title, I was instantly drawn to it.”
For Fortier, the appeal of Stanford extends far beyond the pitch. The university&#8217;s approach to the sciences aligns perfectly with his ambitions.
“From an academic perspective, not only is Stanford’s science programme highly rated globally, it finds creative and fun ways to push their students academically,” he says.

Maintaining excellence in the classroom is nothing new for the future Cardinal. He has been a consistent fixture on the SMCS Honour Roll, maintaining an average of over 90 per cent throughout his high school career.
In addition to his academic and soccer pursuits, Fortier found time to compete in cross country and track and field, following in the footsteps of his father, Michael ’93.
“Every once in a while, a player comes along that is just a ‘stand-out’— Tim’s the type of player you trust anywhere on the field,” says Marco Frattarelli, teacher and Sr. Soccer coach. “You give him free rein because he knows what to do with it. Better than that, he’s a true team player. Always supportive. Always humble. We’ll miss him on the SMCS field.”
Fortier was recognized for his contributions as a student-athlete at SMCS and internationally with the Athlete of the Year award at the school’s year-end banquet in May 2026.
“SMCS has provided me with a strong foundation, demonstrating the importance of discipline and time management, both in school and when I am on the road,” says Fortier. “This has been incredibly important during my training camps away from school and has helped me maintain a strong academic average.
“The support of the teachers, administrators, and staff, and of my classmates, was important in achieving whatever success I’ve had and may have in the future. My busy schedule meant I was out of the country frequently, competing for TFC II or the Canadian National Team, and the teachers were always interested in what I was doing while still holding me to the St. Mike’s academic standards. That truly meant a lot to me.”
Soccer has been a defining feature of the centre midfielder’s life for as long as he can remember, sparked by a competitive backyard rivalry with his brother, Kristjan ’24. That passion instilled in him early on drove him to excel at the highest levels of competitive youth soccer. His international resume is extensive: he represented Canada at the CONCACAF tournament with the U15 National Team and competed at the U17 World Cup, making history as part of the furthest-advancing Canadian youth squad ever while earning Man of the Match honours against France.
Currently, Fortier plays for the U20 national team as they look to qualify for the Olympic Games and the upcoming U20 World Cup. He was recently called up to a Senior Men&#8217;s National Team training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina, to help the squad prepare for World Cup action.

In addition to his elite international competition schedule, Fortier found a true home playing three seasons with the SMCS senior soccer team, leading them to their first-ever senior CISAA championships in 2023.
“My experience playing for St. Mike’s was incredible,” notes Fortier. “With great coaches and teammates, there was a fantastic team culture that you just don’t see in many other places. Playing the game I love with my friends was awesome, and it allowed me to connect with different grades across our school community.”

<h1>Dan Grossi ’01 Memorial Stone Ceremony Blessing</h1>
On May 15, 2026, the Grossi family and friends gathered for the blessing of the Dan Grossi ’01 memorial stone in the Frs. Fitzpatrick, CSB and Zinger, CSB and Ralph Montemurro Sr. Memorial Garden. The beautiful, sun-filled morning marked the third anniversary of his passing, and guests came together to celebrate and remember Dan and his connection to St. Michael’s. Fr. May, CSB, performed the blessing of the stone alongside his wife, Michelle, and daughter, Abigail.

The Memorial Garden, sponsored by the Montemurro Family, now houses the memorial stones that were previously located at the top of the football stadium and have been relocated to the front lawn between the Centre for the Arts and the chapel entrance.
With Dan’s passion for SMCS, the Kerry Blues, and the Toronto Junior Argos, it was fitting that the day also marked the second annual U18 Dan Grossi ’01 Touch Football Tournament happening concurrently on the field where Dan spent much of his time after school.

<h2>Memorial Touch Football Tournament Marks Second Year</h2>
The second annual Dan Grossi Memorial Touch Football Tournament brought together six schools—St. Michael&#8217;s College School, Etobicoke Collegiate, Michael Power, Woodbridge College, Central Toronto Academy, and Brebeuf College—for a day of competitive touch football on Friday, May 15.
“Now in its second year, the tournament is quickly becoming a meaningful tradition at St. Mike&#8217;s—one that gives students the chance to grow as athletes and teammates while celebrating what sport does best—bring people together,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, event organizer and the school’s community engagement and learning lead. “The event honours the legacy of Dan Grossi through athletics and community—values that were on full display throughout the day.”

Students competed over a full day of round-robin games, crossovers, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a championship final. The energy on the field reflected the spirit of the tournament: competitive, enthusiastic, and grounded in genuine sportsmanship.
Coaches, staff, and student volunteers worked together to keep things running smoothly, from scheduling and supervision to welcoming visiting schools and organizing lunch.

<h1>Debate Club Wins Pro-Con Forum</h1>
St. Michael’s College School’s (SMCS) senior debate team members recently took home first place at the Ontario Pro-Con Debating Forum—the largest in Toronto and one with Basilian and SMCS roots.

“Winning this competition is a big deal because it&#8217;s the biggest and only Pro-Con debating forum in Toronto,” says Ronan Zhong, Grade 12, who has been a member of the Debate Club since Grade 7. “Also, this is the first time St. Mike’s senior team has won first place in this tournament since 2000, so it’s a huge comeback for the programme.”
The Ontario Pro-Con Debating Forum was founded in 1960 by Fr. Leo Burns, CSB, ’54 and Joe Younder, OSM, ’56, former SMCS faculty member. SMCS is also one of the founding members of the league.
The 2026 finals, held at SMCS in the Campeau Lecture Hall, welcomed high school teams from around the city, including long-time rival De La Salle College, with which SMCS shares first place after a tie following the competition.
“After three rounds of debate, St. Michael&#8217;s senior debate team of Ronan Zhong, David Li, Lucas Connop, and Edmund Mao accumulated four wins and was tied with rival De La Salle College,” says John Vella ’85. “It would come down to total points to decide the championship. In a highly improbable outcome, after 18 ballots per team, St. Michael&#8217;s and De La Salle were again tied with a total of 480 points.”

“I think that winning this forum was extremely significant for the reputation of St. Mike&#8217;s,” says Lucas Connop, Grade 12, who joined in Grade 11 with no prior experience. “When some people hear of St. Mike&#8217;s, they often think of the prestigious academics, athletics, and arts, but debate doesn&#8217;t usually come to mind. Winning this tournament was a great way to establish our school’s excellence in other fields, too, like debate.”
For the regional qualifier rounds that take place from October to March, any school debate team is invited to compete, but for the final round of competition, only the top four schools may participate.

“Preparation started the day I found out we got into finals,” says Edmond Mao, Grade 12, who has also been a member of the club since Grade 7. “As soon as Mr. Bellisario told us the prepared motion for the debate, we worked tirelessly, figuring out our lines of questioning, constructive speeches, and even potential rebuttals. Preparation isn&#8217;t limited to research but also to practice. When we were researching, our weekly meetings allowed us to anticipate our opponents&#8217; strategies and work around them.”

In addition to the first-place prize, Mao earned an individual third-place speaker trophy for his outstanding work during the competition.
“If you told me back in Grade 7 that I would place third overall speaker and win the entire forum, I would not have believed you,” says Mao. “When I first came to the school, my debate prowess was very limited. As Mr. Bellesario put it, I was a loose cannon; I was passionate but lacked structure. Over the years, I&#8217;ve honed my skills to bring me to where I am now. None of this would have been possible if not for the guidance of the various mentors within the club, such as Mr. Vella, Mr. Bellesario, and our former president, Joseph Luo ’24.”
Zhong adds, “My experience with high school debate has been a long, but very rewarding experience. When I became debate president in Grade 11, my goal was always to revive the club and create a strong debating programme at St. Mike’s. This win in the Pro-Con Debating Forum really shows how far we’ve come as a club, and as individual debaters, and I couldn’t be any prouder of our accomplishments.”

<h1>DECA at SMCS: From a Small Club to the International Stage</h1>
Twelve years ago, DECA at St. Michael&#8217;s College School (SMCS) started with about 10 students. This year, more than 100 students competed. That kind of growth doesn&#8217;t happen on its own—it comes from students who take the programme seriously and staff who build something worth showing up for.

DECA gives students a chance to compete in business scenarios that go well beyond anything covered in a classroom. Role-plays, written events, case studies, and presentations—the events push students to think fast, communicate clearly, and back up their ideas under pressure. The areas of focus range from marketing and finance to entrepreneurship and hospitality, offering real breadth for students to explore.
One thing that has shaped the programme at SMCS is how it brings together students from Grades 9 through 12. Older students mentor younger ones, and that culture of passing knowledge down has helped build consistency in how the team competes and carries itself. A turning point came in 2015 when Julian Greco ’18 became the first SMCS student to qualify for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), setting a standard for future students and the programme. This year, two students cleared that bar—Arjun Sivakumar and Shelain Fernando both qualified for the 2026 ICDC in Atlanta.
“DECA at St. Mike&#8217;s has evolved into far more than a business competition club—it&#8217;s an extension of the school&#8217;s commitment to leadership, character development, and experiential education,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, community engagement and learning lead. “Students are encouraged to take risks, think globally, and develop the confidence to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.”

Arjun Sivakumar:
“I originally joined DECA to bridge the gap between my passion for STEM and the realities of the professional world. While my long-term goals lie in science and technology, I recognized early on that even the most groundbreaking innovation requires a solid foundation in business to reach its full potential.
My experience in DECA has pushed me to sharpen my public speaking and analytical skills far beyond the traditional classroom setting. Competing in the Integrated Marketing Campaign Event (IMCE) taught me not only how to sell but also how to communicate complex ideas to a global audience. Stepping onto the international stage at ICDC in Atlanta was the culmination of that journey. Competing at the highest level was exhilarating, but the true highlight was the networking. Meeting driven, like-minded peers from across the globe provided a fresh perspective on how interconnected our world, and our future careers, really are.
I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to grow as both a leader and a communicator, and I look forward to applying these lessons as I move into the next phase of my journey.”
Shelain Fernando:
“What drew me to DECA was my desire to connect with like-minded individuals who also aspired to do great things within the professional world. My interest in the club was only furthered after attending my first provincials at DECA. This pushed me to aspire for greater heights and to make it to ICDC.
My DECA experience can only be described as a journey of incredible growth. Through DECA, I have greatly improved my public speaking skills, which have helped me in all walks of life. Competing in IMCE has helped me learn skills I wouldn&#8217;t have otherwise, and I am eternally grateful for that.
Attending the ICDC after all that hard work was an unforgettable experience. Five full days of competition filled me with a kind of anticipation and excitement that I had never experienced before. ICDC connected me with people from around the globe, and it showed me that people living thousands of miles apart can work towards a common goal.”

DECA at SMCS: From a Small Club to the International Stage

<h1>Grade 11 Student Earns International Writing Award</h1>
St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Grade 11 student, Chanoh Song, recently received an achievement award in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), earning the ‘Superior’ distinction for his English essay, “Freedom Between the Pages.”

The NCTE has been around since 1911, with more than 25,000 members, from kindergarten teachers to university professors. Its Achievement Awards in Writing have recognized standout student writers since 1957—nearly seven decades of honouring student excellence in writing.
The competition wasn&#8217;t small. This year, 689 students were nominated from schools across the United States, Canada, Jamaica, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Song was nominated by his AP English Language and Composition teacher, Ms. Vanessa Iaboni. The course centres on evidence-based writing, rhetorical analysis of non-fiction texts, and the decisions writers make as they compose and revise.
“As part of the course, students read and analyzed essays by Fran Lebowitz, James Baldwin, and David Foster Wallace—and Song’s winning piece fits squarely in that tradition, written as creative non-fiction in the same genre the class has been studying all year,” says Iaboni.
The piece reflects on a summer spent in South Korea—reading, thinking, and figuring things out through literature and philosophy.
“I&#8217;ve always enjoyed English, especially discussion, analysis, and writing,” adds Song. “Over time, I became more confident in expressing complex ideas and developing my own voice. Writing has become a passion for me because it lets me explore ideas more deeply and communicate perspectives that matter to me. At this stage in my life, it feels like both a creative outlet and a way to better understand the world around me.”
Judges read each submission and weighed everything from the strength of the ideas to the tone, word choice, organization, and style. Earning the top designation of ‘Superior’ puts Song among a very small group.
“When I found out about the NCTE results, it was honestly unexpected,” says Song. “Being recognized internationally feels incredibly rewarding and humbling. Writing is usually such a personal and private process, so having my work resonate beyond my classroom and community means a lot to me.”
This isn&#8217;t the first time Song’s writing has turned heads. He earned a silver medal in the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest and was shortlisted for the John Locke Institute Global Essay Competition—a prestigious international competition that brought him to London for the awards ceremony at Grosvenor House.

“Chanoh has always put a lot of effort into everything that he does, so it was no surprise to me that he wanted to enter this writing contest,” says Iaboni. “The piece itself was quite reflective, showing how reading can be one of the best pathways for self-discovery.
“It&#8217;s especially important for young people to hear this, particularly young men, especially in a world in which addictive technology is vying for every ounce of their attention span. I especially liked how open he was to reading different genres and learning everything he could from them. Most of all, the connection he made in the essay between co-existing with suffering and with peace was especially poignant.”

<h1>SMCS Football Captain Commits to Western</h1>
After years of leadership and success on the field at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), Grade 12 student-athlete Alexander Czarnota has committed to continue his academic and football career at Western University.
“I chose Western because it offers the perfect balance between high-level football and strong academics,” says Czarnota. “I felt it was the best place for me to continue growing in both areas. I’m excited to be part of a competitive programme with a strong culture and a strong support system for student-athletes.” At Western, Czarnota plans to pursue a degree in business management with the goal of majoring in marketing.

Czarnota began playing football in Grade 9 at SMCS while also competing in the Junior Argonauts programme. Over four seasons in the SMCS football programme, the defensive tackle has helped contribute to some memorable achievements for the Kerry Blues, including a CISAA championship in Grade 10 and an undefeated 8–0 record in 2025.
Along the way, he earned several individual honours, including the Senior Lineman of the Year award in Grade 11 and selection to the Toronto All-Star Team in his graduating year.
“Football at St. Mike’s means everything to me,” he says. “Over the past few years, it has taught me not only how to compete at a high level, but also how to lead and grow as a person. The school helped prepare me for the next level by building discipline, leadership, and a strong work ethic—qualities I will carry with me to Western.”

His impact at SMCS extended beyond the football field. In addition to serving as team captain, he also played lacrosse for four years, demonstrating leadership across multiple athletic programmes.
“Alexander has represented our programme with toughness, discipline, and humility,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, Sr. Kerry Blues coach and community engagement and learning lead. &#8220;As both a football player and student-athlete, Alex consistently led by example through his work ethic, commitment to his teammates, and dedication in the classroom. We are incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished at SMCS and wish him continued success as he begins the next chapter of his journey at Western University. Western is gaining not only a talented athlete, but an outstanding young man.”
Czarnota credits the SMCS coaching staff for helping shape both his development as a player and his passion for the game.

“I’m especially grateful for the impact my coaches—Coach Tropea, Coach Lumsden, Coach Foyle, Coach Williams, and Coach Ross—have had on me,” he says. “They’ve played a huge role in developing my love for the game and shaping who I am today.”
Having attended SMCS since Grade 7, he reflects on his experience with gratitude as he prepares for the next chapter of his academic and athletic journey.
“Attending St. Mike’s was the best decision I’ve ever made, and I’m excited to bring everything I’ve learned with me to Western.”
