<h1>Academics and Hockey a Perfect Match for Morello</h1>
Academics and hockey are proving to be a successful combination for another St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) student bound for the NCAA.
Jonathan Morello, a Grade 11 student has recently earned a scholarship to Clarkson University to continue his academic journey and compete in Division I hockey.

“A major part of my decision came down to the coaching staff and the team culture at Clarkson,” says Morello. “The confidence the coaches showed in me as a player and how they see me developing over the next few years was a big part of my choice. I was also impressed by the overall hockey training programme and facilities.”
At SMCS, Morello’s commitment to academics has been evident and played a significant role in his decision. He has been a perennial honour roll student since entering SMCS in Grade 7, boasting an average of over 90 per cent in three of his first four years at the school.

“I am not completely certain of what I am going to study, but I am interested in the highly respected engineering and management undergraduate programme which combines engineering knowledge and business strategies,” says Morello. “Clarkson’s class size and professor-to-student ratio are very much like St. Mike&#8217;s. It is a great self-contained university campus with great access to resources.”
Morello’s high school career has also been complemented by a busy co-curricular schedule, playing school hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball during his time at SMCS.
“I have always been impressed by Jonathan’s positive attitude, relentless work ethic, and attention to detail,” says Morello’s former coach and SMCS faculty member, Paul Ruta. “When I first met him when he was 12 years old, I quickly realized he was a goal-oriented student-athlete who is very diligent, personable, and someone who was able to find a nice balance between his academics and high-level athletic schedule.
“I have had the opportunity to work with him closely over the last few years and admire his commitment to improving his weaknesses every single day. Jonathan is extremely coachable and is always focused on the process rather than the end result.&#8221;
On the ice, Morello grew up playing in the GTHL and was drafted into the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) by the Erie Otters in the 13th round of the Priority Selection. Ultimately, he decided to graduate from SMCS and pursue D1 hockey.
Currently, the star forward is in his rookie season with the St. Michael’s Buzzers Jr. A team with plans of playing at least another season of junior hockey before joining Clarkson’s flagship team.
“There is a lot of focus and attention on the hockey programme as it is Clarkson&#8217;s only D1 sport, which is a huge positive for me,” adds Morello. “Their hockey facilities really impressed me and they have so many tools and new technologies that players can use to improve their game.”

While Morello still has over a year left before graduating from SMCS, the impact the school has made on him from an academic, athletic, and personal growth perspective has already left a substantial impression on him.
“In my fifth year at St. Mike’s, I have noticed how this school has contributed to my growth as a person, student, and player,” says Morello. “While academics are the priority, there is a foundational culture of goodness, compassion, and discipline that transcends my studies and influences many aspects of my life. The opportunity to combine my interest with sports in school has been an amazing experience. SMCS has created an environment to allow focused students the opportunity to pursue sports at a very high level. For me, it was volleyball, hockey, and lacrosse. I have been given the tools to be able to push beyond what I thought I was capable of. I will be forever grateful for my life at SMCS.”

After five years of dedicated service to Indigenous youth in Canada from an initiative that he co-founded, Daniel Berton, Grade 12, was recently honoured with a prestigious award from his community.
On January 29, 2023, Berton was presented with an ‘Outstanding Volunteer Service to the Community 2022 Award’ by Yvan Baker, MP for Etobicoke Centre.
“I was nominated by the community for my Indigenous Youth Hockey Equipment Drive and service to Indigenous communities,” says Berton. “It is an extremely proud moment for me to share with the St. Mike’s family.”

The Community Recognition Awards, which Baker presents annually, recognize individuals and groups who are making a difference in the Etobicoke community.
“Daniel&#8217;s recognition is a true testament to both his continued hard work and his constant commitment to place the needs of others before his own,” says Francesco Bellissimo, accounting and economics teacher at SMCS. “As a proud member of the SMCS faculty and staff, I know both myself and my colleagues strive to provide our students with the tools necessary to be leaders both inside and outside the classroom, as well as in the future after they leave the yellow brick halls of St. Mike&#8217;s. When wonderful stories like Daniel&#8217;s arise where he is exhibiting leadership and being recognized by his community for his efforts, it truly feels like mission accomplished.”
Berton, along with his friend Ethan, started the hockey equipment drive in 2018.
“I have always enjoyed playing hockey ever since I could remember,” says Berton. “In Grade 8, I learned that many Indigenous children living in northern communities did not have the same opportunity to play hockey that I did, due to a lack of resources. I wanted to be part of something to change that sad fact. Something which would make a difference. I reached out to my goalie pal (Ethan) who also collected equipment and we decided to partner up to co-found our Annual Indigenous Youth Hockey Equipment Drive.”

To date, the pair have collected roughly 700 bags filled with equipment, almost 2,000 hockey sticks, and more than 100 sets of goalie pads, which have all been generously donated to Indigenous communities in need.
“In collaboration with the OPP, who distributed the donated equipment, it was discussed the initial community of need would be in Fort Albany, Ontario,” says Berton. “As we collected many more bags than that community needed, Attawapiskat, Sagamok First Nation was added. The more we gathered, the more communities were serviced.”
Each year, from September to December, Berton typically puts in approximately 100 hours of service managing and organizing the hockey equipment drive.

“It is super important for young people like myself to volunteer for a few reasons,” says Berton. “First, helping others feels great. Second, kids have big networks with schools and sports; we can raise awareness and get many volunteers quickly. And finally, volunteering is a great way to learn new skills such as communication, planning, and leadership.”
To get the word out about their initiative, Berton and his partner created flyers outlining the items they were looking for as well as drop-off dates and locations. They distributed them to community schools, rinks, minor hockey teams, and used social media to spread their message.
“What I enjoy most about my volunteer work is seeing the positive impact it has on the lives of Indigenous youth,” he says. “Seeing and sharing the photos of equipment being distributed and played with, getting the letters of thanks in from the kids and the communities we’ve served is incredibly rewarding. It makes everyone involved feel fantastic.”

This year alone, the team was able to collect 200 hockey bags, more than 200 hockey sticks, and two dozen pairs of goalie pads. Some of the equipment was even sent to communities in the Northwest Territories.
“Daniel embodies all three major aspects of the school&#8217;s vision, with a significant focus on service,” says Bellissimo. “His countless community service endeavors show his dedication to helping those around him and being a leader in this area. Despite the significant time commitments that these activities add to a busy schedule, Daniel has always remained positive; in addition, the smile on his face when he talks about them is a clear indication of how proud and happy he is to serve the community. Furthermore, Daniel’s dedication to service also impacts the other two aspects of the school’s vision, as it displays his kind and positive character and his strong desire to live the values of our faith every day.”

<h1>Being the Best for the World: New Inspiring Young Alumni Recognized</h1>
The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) community is excited to introduce the newest group of alumni who are featured on our Inspiring Young Alumni Wall.
Situated prominently in our main hallway across from the main office, our <a href="/alumni/inspiring-young-alumni" aria-label="Inspiring Young Alumni Wall">Inspiring Young Alumni Wall</a> is among the first things visitors see upon arriving at SMCS. It features photos and brief bios of over 20 diverse and accomplished alumni under 35 who are making a difference and being the best for the world.

The wall displays alumni from the graduation years ranging from 2005 to 2021. They have been recognized as unique achievers within their chosen field and have made ground-breaking strives in their industries and continue to work towards being the very best for the world. In the future, the new members of the wall will also be featured on exterior banners on the school’s front lawn.

“The Inspiring Young Alumni Wall shows the current SMCS students that anything is possible. The Inspiring Young Alumni Wall initiative was first installed in 2019, with this newest version marking its first major update. The plan is to revisit the wall and complimentary banners that adorn the school’s front lawn every three years.
The wall serves as a reminder to the current students, that success comes in different forms and in unexpected places. For former, current, and future SMCS students and families, the display serves as an illustration of our vision of graduating young men who will change the world coming to fruition.
Together these alumni serve as a small, but impactful cross-section of the benefits and lasting impact of a SMCS education.

<h1>Ouellet Accepts NCAA Scholarship to AIC</h1>
Marcus Ouellet, a member of the 2022 graduating class at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) has recently accepted a Division 1 hockey scholarship to American International College (AIC) to continue his education and hockey career.

“Playing hockey for a NCAA D1 programme is a tremendous honour, and getting a scholarship offer is extremely competitive,” says Ouellet, an 18-year-old goaltender. “When AIC reached out, I didn’t hesitate to accept their offer. Playing NCAA D1 hockey has been a dream of mine and AIC has always been near the top of my list of teams. Also, a good portion of my scholarship came from the academic side.”
During his time at SMCS, Ouellet found success in the classroom and on the ice. In his graduating year, he was recognized as an Ontario Scholar and won the Media Arts Medal for his outstanding achievement in the subject.

“St. Michael’s helped me see the importance of achieving good grades while I was in school, which paid off in the end,” says Ouellet. “I had the opportunity to explore many passions that I could pursue in university and the one that stuck with me the most was media arts, in large part thanks to Mr. Escobedo’s support. AIC offers a media arts programme, which is what I am hoping to study.”
On the ice, the highly regarded student-athlete was a core piece of the school’s hockey programme every year.
“While attending St. Michael’s, I played for Mr. Giancola’s U14 Blue team, Mr. Ruta’s U16 team and Dan Brown’s senior team,” says Ouellet. “It was an amazing experience. Playing hockey and representing my school was always a goal of mine when first coming to St. Michael’s in Grade 7.”

After graduating from SMCS, Ouellet traded his St. Michael’s double blue for the double blue of the Cochrane Crunch, a Jr. A team in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. With plans on another year of Jr. A hockey development before joining AIC, Ouellet is looking forward to the experience and living the shared values he has with SMCS and AIC.
“What stood out to me the most about AIC is their culture. AIC doesn’t only look for talented and hardworking people on and off the ice, but also for people with a good character,” says Ouellet. “Over my six years at St. Michael’s, I learned a lot about what it means to be a person of good character, and it’s something I value a great deal.”

<h1>Catching up with our new Community Engagement and Learning Lead, Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96</h1>
After a 20-year teaching career at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), Dr. Daniel Lumsden has added a new layer to his vocation as a Catholic educator.
In September 2022, Lumsden took over the leadership of the school’s Community Engagement and Learning Department, overseeing a programme that is now in its fifth year as an evolving school initiative.

“I took on the position because I find that students learn best through experiential learning. It started with taking students overseas to visit alumni and business professionals, starting a speaker series, and implementing a flipped learning concept in my teachings,” says Lumsden. “Getting feedback from students after they graduate stating how valuable the experiential education opportunities were, informed me that I was headed in the right direction when it comes to student learning.”
The SMCS Community Engagement and Learning programme actively supports the development of key skill sets for student success in post-secondary pursuits and beyond. Through strategic partnerships with community members and organizations, the programme connects curriculum programming directly to real-world knowledge by taking classroom learning into the outside world.

In Lumsden’s first few months on the job, he has already led many impactful initiatives to enhance student learning while continuing to teach part-time.
“I have two Grade 12 accounting classes this year, and I teach them both on the same day of the rotation, so that has been a tremendous help in my transition to this role,” says Lumsden. “Staying directly involved with students is important in this role. For years, I have integrated experiential learning in my classroom along with planning over 20 overseas student trips built on connecting the practical concepts they learned while travelling to the theory taught in the classrooms.”
A busy start to the year has resulted in plans for many initiatives in the second half, including several guest speakers, a revamped career day, a new partnership and student conference, and student-learning trips.

Lumsden will oversee a University of Michigan business tour in January for more than 40 students to speak with business professors while watching a university sporting event and also tour the Ross School of Business.
In April, SMCS will be hosting its first all-black student conference, a one-day event that will look at black excellence and how we can further support black students in independent schools. The theme of the conference will be ‘brilliancy and resilience’.
Lumsden has also secured a partnership with Unity Health, teaming up with St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Michael&#8217;s Hospital, and Providence Healthcare. Students will offer 90 hours of volunteer service over the summer months, engaged in everything from walking patients and telling them stories, to having a chance to also work on the business side of hospitals, including marketing and raising funds for charity.

“We are working to provide the best opportunities for student learning inside and out of the classroom,” says Lumsden. “It starts with the parent and alumni networks. Those are the relationships we must establish first to grow this department. The alumni network is strong, and we have to take advantage of that.”
He adds, “We aim to bring a different lens to education, working on a student&#8217;s transformative skills while bringing the world into and outside the classroom. Our vision is to graduate young men who will change the world through lives of faith, character, and service. In doing so, we need to prepare them to be strong global citizens, and that starts by giving them experiences outside the classroom.”

<h1>New Experiences and Learning at Grade 8 Winter Camp</h1>
Community building and personal growth are among the common themes that run throughout the Outdoor and Experiential Education Programme at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), and they remained the focus of the unique Grade 8 winter camp experience.
“The camp was a great success despite the inability to do some of our traditional activities,” says David Lee ’94, vice principal at SMCS. “The students, leaders, and staff had a great time.”

Grade 8 students attended Camp Wanakita in Haliburton, Ontario with ALIVE Outdoors, an experiential and outdoor education company, from January 9 to 12 — the first four days back following the Christmas holidays.
With the recent warm temperatures and lack of snow, some of the traditional activities students experience such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and tobogganing, weren’t possible this year.
“We had some new rotations including orienteering, Arctic and Inuit games, and we had never done the low ropes courses or climbing initiatives in the winter,” says Lee. “We also had our first ever outdoor winter campfire liturgy.”

More than 75 students and senior student-leaders along with six faculty members attended this year’s winter camp. In addition to the valuable experiential education opportunities, the trip allows students to make lasting connections with their peers and the opportunity to be mentored and learn from the student-leaders — many of whom have experienced it for themselves.
“Students need to be fully immersed in the outdoors and understand nature during the winter season,” says Lee on the importance of providing a winter camp experience. “Many engage in winter activities such as skating or skiing but they rarely take the time to be present in the environment and reflect on the experience. Hopefully, they will be more mindful and appreciate the winter experience more.”
