<h1>Annual Golf Tournament Raises the Bar for Financial Assistance Programme</h1>
Under the bright red sky of a stunning fall morning, the St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) community came together on October 5 to support our students at the annual golf tournament.
This year&#8217;s tournament returned to Vaughan&#8217;s beautiful Eagles Nest Golf Club. The full slate of 144 golfers consisted of alumni, parents, friends, and business partners from the SMCS community who came together for a day of fun in support of the Financial Assistance Programme. This programme assists young men with a financial need with the opportunity to attend St. Michael&#8217;s College School. Since its inception, the tournament has raised more than $715,000 for the programme.

With the dedication and determination of a new committee, the tournament raised over $65,000, making it one of the most successful tournaments. Many thanks to our sponsors: Platinum – Fitzrovia; Gold – Solmar, DDL, Rampart, Ridley, RWM, DG Group, BJRC, Capo Sgro LLP; and Silver – Chartwell.
In anticipation of a morning shotgun start, golfers arrived early to use the complimentary practice facilities, enjoy breakfast, and register, where they received a custom SMCS Under Armour quarter-zip and an Eagles Nest baseball hat. New this year, each golfer also received a sleeve of sponsored golf balls courtesy of Screemers, ICP Securities INC, KAPP, and the Nunno Group, thus providing each golfer with a dozen golf balls.
“This was by far the best version of the tournament I have attended,” says Martin Fox ’02. “Eagles Nest is a destination and a true challenge for all golfers, and it was great to see a new cohort of SMCS grads between the ’00 – ’15 period come out and participate this year.”
As part of the day’s festivities, golfers participated in a putting contest to win a Spyder Putter and a raffle to win a foursome at Eagles Nest. A silent auction during the luncheon featured various items, from SMCS Arena ice time to Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Jo Malone products.

“It was great meeting so many St. Michael’s alumni and seeing their continuing devotion to the school and its mission,” says John Connelly, SMCS Director of Student Affairs. “It was especially nice to encounter several young alumni, many of whom I have had the pleasure to know in English or Guidance.”
Following the round, golfers gathered for a luncheon where Adam Ouimet ’02 spoke from the heart about the impact the Financial Assistance Programme had on him during his years at SMCS. Each academic year, St. Michael’s awards over $2 million in assistance to 20 per cent of the student population.
Chris Smith ’02 and his foursome ended the day with a score of 60 (-11) to win the tournament! J.P. O&#8217;Neill &#8217;86 and Rod Jackson were also big winners, with O’Neill winning an Eagles Nest foursome, and Jackson winning the Spyder Putter from the putting contest.

“Other than winning, our favourite thing was seeing a lot of younger alumni return for the tournament this year, many of whom we hadn&#8217;t seen since we graduated,” says Smith. “I think the proximity of the course this year helped some people who had never participated before make it out. The golf tournament is a great day full of food and laughs all while giving back to the school, if you haven&#8217;t participated or sponsored before I highly suggest getting involved. We&#8217;ll be back next year to defend our title, I look forward to seeing everyone again and maybe even some new faces.”

<h1>Green to Bring Hockey Talents to Merrimack</h1>
David Green, Grade 12, will be heading to Merrimack College in Massachusetts in 2025 to continue his academic and athletic career.

“Merrimack was an easy choice from an educational standpoint due to its amazing business programme,” says Green, who will graduate from St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) in June 2024. “The class size was exactly what I was looking for in a school, providing the support you need as a student-athlete.
“The hockey programme is led by an amazing group of coaches and staff, and I can see myself playing a big role,” he says. “They have a winning attitude, which is one of the biggest things for me as it is a dream of mine to win a national championship. They also have an amazing facility with everything you need for the sport, which was also a big attraction. The culture in the room that the coaches created was also something I was looking for in a team.”
Growing up, Green played for the Toronto Marlboros for his seven years of minor hockey culminating in being drafted in the fifth round, 88th overall, in the 2022 OHL priority selection. The defenceman is now in his second season with the St. Michael’s Buzzers Jr. A team.
“I joined the Buzzers after my minor midget year, which I believe was the best spot for me. Playing on the Buzzers for the last year was fantastic, and I am enjoying it again this year as I have been able to grow not only as a player but as a person.”

At SMCS, Green is an honour roll student and when he’s not playing hockey, he enjoys playing lacrosse with the Blue Gaels Lacrosse Team. Due to the pandemic, Green was only able to play two years of hockey on SMCS teams which included a U14 championship.
&#8220;St. Michael’s College School has been such a great school for me and has had a big impact on my education,” he says. “Also, being able to walk over to the rink and continue developing on the ice has allowed me to thrive as a true student-athlete.&#8221;

“David is a fierce competitor who commands respect from teammates and opponents alike,” says Angus Dineley, English Department Head. “He&#8217;s always looking to improve as an individual student-athlete and part of the larger defensive unit. It&#8217;s this desire to get better every day, even more so than his impressive physical skills, that sets Greener apart. I look forward to seeing him compete at the next level.”

<h1>Community Honours the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation</h1>
As a Downie-Wenjack Legacy school, St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) is committed to “engaging, empowering, and connecting our students and educators to further reconciliation through awareness, education, and action or reconciliACTION.”
As part of this commitment, on Monday, October 2, the SMCS community honoured the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a walk designed to commemorate Chanie Wenjack’s ill-fated trek home in 1966. Chanie was only 11 years old when he died of hunger and exposure trying to cover the 600 km from Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in Kenora, Ontario to his home on the Marten Falls Reserve.

To that end, 20 plaques with information about residential schooling, inter-generational trauma, Orange Shirt Day, Chanie, and current Indigenous issues such as the Opioid crisis, lack of educational opportunities, and disproportionate representation in the child welfare system were placed along a path from the north gymnasium door, along the track, and back towards the students’ entrance. Teachers brought out their classes, one at a time, to solemnly walk this trail, discuss the information on each plaque and tie orange ribbons along the fence to symbolize the school children who did not make it back to their families. The mathematical equation of the number of staff and students involved, plus the distance each person walked, added up to approximate the 600 km Chanie set out to travel.
Other initiatives on the path to reconciliACTION in the school include a closer look at personalizing the school’s land acknowledgments, developing a land acknowledgment monument, preparation for Secret Path week and Treaties week, the development of a student group interested in Indigenous issues, and the continuous professional growth, learning, and sharing of the Indigenous Education Committee.

“Last week, during the walks on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, my class and I had the ability to truly understand how important the remembrance of the horrors and atrocities committed by the Canadian government against the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. Sign by sign, paragraph by paragraph, we really understood the tragedy and walked collectively as a school to honour the roughly 540 kilometres left on Chanie Wenjack&#8217;s journey from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School after having walked about 60 kilometres — 600 kilometres too many. The day had a profound emotional impact on me personally. The walk originated as a thought, such as ‘Wow, this must’ve been such a multi-sided story,’ to ending with, ‘Our government did this?’ Learning about the dark history and enduring legacy of the residential school system was both heart-wrenching and eye-opening.” &#8211; Marco Boci, Grade 10
“The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was a very emotional day for me. As I hear and learn more about Indigenous children&#8217;s experiences, I feel sad that kids and families had to face these atrocities. No child should ever go through these types of experiences. St. Mike&#8217;s makes ongoing attempts to make students more aware of Indigenous culture and everything behind the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. St. Mike&#8217;s dedicates numerous units to learning and teaching students. I am proud that I was able to become more aware and learn together with my St. Michael&#8217;s classmates. In addition, there are plenty of initiatives and announcements that raise awareness for truth and reconciliation.” &#8211; James Simone, Grade 12

“It breaks my heart every time I hear Chanie&#8217;s story. He was so close, yet so far from reaching home, being only able to walk a fraction of the distance needed to go back home, while the harsh weather conditions were against him. His story is one of the many others that show the suffering of the Indigenous Peoples, and I’m glad that the school has been showing continuous effort to spread awareness of the dark history Canada has. For me, it made my experience at this school feel more impactful to the world when I did assignments that incorporated the issues that Indigenous Peoples must face. <h1>SMCS Gathers to Celebrate Academic Achievements</h1>

The annual Academic Awards Night at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) brought our school community together for an evening honouring the incredible academic accomplishments of our students.
“It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students,” says Emile John ’87, vice principal at SMCS. “It is a night where excellence is honoured as we recognize those students who have achieved honour roll standing with an academic average of 80 per cent or greater.”

Each year, students and their families gather to participate in an evening to recognize the hard work, commitment, and dedication that led to their honour roll standing. 
Nearly 60 per cent of the student body earned the honour roll distinction in the 2022-23 academic year. Students who achieved 90 per cent or higher were further recognized with a Basilian Book Award and a $300 cheque from the Basilian Fathers. A staggering 121 students received this distinction. Also, at each grade level, students with the top five academic averages were distinguished with Basilian Scholarships totalling $60,000. The generosity of the Basilian Fathers saw close to $100,000 given in awards and scholarships.

While academic excellence is the primary focus of the evening, the students&#8217; artistic and musical talents were also on display. Two musical interludes during the evening highlighted the artistic excellence that is part of the expectation and programming of St. Michael’s College School. The Sr. Jazz Ensemble provided a fun and uplifting piece while a piano solo by Grade 10 student Marco Boci was moving and beautifully played.

“Held on the Thursday before the Thanksgiving long weekend, the night also expresses gratitude and appreciation,” says John. “It was most fitting this year that the Academic Awards Night occurred on World Teachers Day. Our students&#8217; commitment, hard work, and dedication is matched only by our teachers, who work tirelessly to provide the experiences and opportunities for our students.”

 <h1>Inspiring Young Alumni: Catching up with Kevin Collins ’13</h1>
 Since sharing his story for the St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Inspiring Young Alumni Wall, Kevin Collins ’13
 was recently promoted to the Director of Rooms at the Park Hyatt Toronto in June 2023. Collins has also been
 actively involved with our Alumni Association and will be the featured keynote speaker at the upcoming university
 fair on October 17, 2023.

 Please provide a brief update on your professional life. 
 As the new Director of Rooms at the Park Hyatt Toronto, I oversee the front office, housekeeping, and security
 operations of the hotel and Stillwater Spa – a full luxury spa located at the hotel. I am responsible for the
 forecasting, revenue, and budgeting of all areas, along with maintaining and advancing all guest-facing service
 aspects of the property.
 After a four-year renovation, the reimagined Park Hyatt Toronto welcomes guests back to the Yorkville neighbourhood
 for a refined luxury experience that celebrates the arts, culture, quality food and beverage, and a
 ‘home-away-from-home’ service approach!
 Please describe your history with SMCS.
 I was first introduced to SMCS in Grade 8 and was evaluating my prospective high school options for the following
 year. I was captivated by the opportunity to attend SMCS due to the reputation for an all-encompassing education
 that allows you to find your passion both inside and outside the classroom, work through your challenges, and be
 supported. I attended SMCS from Grades 9 through 12.
 How have you remained connected with SMCS since graduation? 
 After I graduated from SMCS, I stayed in Toronto (for university and the beginning of my professional life), which
 has allowed me to keep in touch with the school in various ways. I have been provided with the opportunity to be the
 keynote speaker at an alumni networking event and supported and mentored Grade 12 students as they participated in
 the Global Ideas Institute project hosted by the University of Toronto related to mental health in athletes. I have
 also attended the Archangel’s Den contest, Turkey Rolls, and have even been able to participate as an on-field
 official for a few SMCS football games!
 How would you describe your time at the school?
 I would summarize my time at SMCS as formative. On a professional level, within the opportunities provided and
 daily life at the school, I created life-long positive habits that have only proved to be a huge aid in my
 professional life. The foundation of growth in terms of hard skills learnt in every class, business and data
 analysis, language skills, and contract development, for example, but also the soft skills like communication, time
 management, resourcefulness, leadership, openness to criticism, that are all required to succeed in life, were
 developed in the classrooms and on the field, rink, and stage are so valuable. Personally, the friendships and
 memories created during my time at SMCS are sincere and have been influential in all my interactions with people
 since my graduation.

 How did SMCS prepare you for and propel you into life?
 I created formative positive habits and relationships that influence and guide me to this day.
 How do you live out the Basilian motto of Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge? 
 I believe that the motto summarizes the principles of what a quality and well-rounded person should be – and that
 is the guide for me every day when I am at home with my fiancé, friends, and family or at work with my colleagues. I
 try to be well-informed, honest, and sincere in my interactions and seek opportunities to support those around me.
 
 Briefly describe what you are doing now. Would you like to share any future plans?
 In terms of my professional life, I continue to be involved in the sport of football as a high-ranking football
 official working with the Canadian Football League, USports, and Amateur levels of football across the country. In
 my personal life, my fiancé and I are set to be wed on October 21, 2023, and I will have three fellow SMCS graduates
 as part of my groomsmen party and many more in attendance as the bond of friendship is strong.
 Describe how you are being the best for the world through your work and education.
 If asked to summarize the hospitality industry into one word, my answer very easily would be the word ‘care’, which
 would be my response to how I am the best for the world. At the Park Hyatt Toronto, the principle of care is
 foundational in all that we do – we care for our fellow colleagues, we care for our guests, we care for our
 community, and the hope is that the care we show in so many different forms continues as a ripple effect so that the
 world is building day-by-day into a better place.

 What advice do you have for current students?
 I would advise current students that as they seek out and explore their future careers, they examine industries
 that are perhaps not as ‘mainstream’ as those promoted as common in their field of studies and find a niche space
 that touches on their passions. Using a hotel as an example, we employ certified accountants, engineers, information
 and technology managers, security members focused on the physical and digital security of our systems and data,
 finance and revenue analytics, chefs, and many other areas that layer on top of the traditional idea of what a hotel
 would be.

<h1>Giancola Headed to Clarkson</h1>
Grade 11 student-athlete Cristian Giancola will head south to Clarkson University after completing his St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) journey.
The highly touted hockey player was fortunate to have many options following the completion of Grade 10 and his U16 AAA all-star season. After being selected in the seventh round of the Ontario Hockey League’s Priority Selection Draft and considering several other NCAA opportunities, Giancola settled on Clarkson after visiting the campus and meeting the coaching staff.

“When looking at Clarkson, there are so many positives that led me to commit there, including the staff who are incredible not only as coaches, but as people, and made me feel welcome,” says Giancola. “Also, the university facilities were a major factor for me after learning about their recent $30 million upgrade to the arena and training facilities. I was also really impressed with Clarkson’s track record of producing pro hockey players and how many players attended NHL camps this year.”
Giancola has been a multi-sport athlete during his two years at the school. He was a member of the U16 hockey team and junior volleyball in Grades 9 and 10 and last year, joined the school’s track and field team, which he plans on continuing with again this year.
“During my time at St. Mike’s, I have learned about the importance and responsibility of being a student-athlete. We are encouraged to pursue athletics and take pride in them. However, our academic responsibilities are extremely important, and that’s why ‘student’ comes first in student-athlete.

“My St. Michael’s hockey experience has been amazing, and I also enjoyed competing in the other sports. I’ve improved my skills, had a lot of fun, and built many friendships.”
With two years left at SMCS, Giancola is still considering which programme he will pursue at university; however, he has a strong interest in Clarkson’s business programme.
“Cristian is one of the most hardworking, passionate, and professional student-athletes I’ve ever coached,” says Giancola’s former coach and SMCS faculty member, Paul Ruta. “His leadership qualities, attention to detail and love for the game are unmatched for a 16-year-old. Best wishes to him in the future in his quest for excellence.”

On the ice, Giancola is focused on the season ahead as he settles in as a promising rookie with the Toronto Patriots Jr. A hockey team.
“This year, I’ve set a goal to improve as much as possible,” says Giancola. “Playing junior hockey is a great way to get exposed to an older and higher level of hockey, which will help me improve.”
