<h1>Developing STEM Skills: 2024 VEX Robotics Tournament Preview</h1>
St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) is getting set to host the 8th iDESIGN Central Toronto VEX Robotics Competition, bringing students from across Ontario together to compete in the full-day tournament on February 10, 2024.
The tournament will feature the VEX Robotics Competition Over Under game, where each team plays 5-6 rounds in a two-vs-two format. Teams attempt to accumulate the most points by scoring balls in the opposing goal area and having their robot lift itself up at the end of the match, with more points awarded for greater heights.

“We hope that a few of our teams will be able to place high enough in the rankings to make it to the provincial championships,” says Patrick Feghali, teacher and co-moderator of the SMCS VEX Robotics Club. “We can accomplish our goal by placing well in the tournament or by performing well in the skills challenges, where one robot is placed in a field with the aim to score as many solo points as possible.”
The provincial championships take place on February 23 and 24. In 2023, SMCS Team 6060X, comprised of Grades 9 and 10 students, placed in the top 20 during the provincial tournament that saw more than 60 teams compete.
“My goals heading into this tournament are to win a couple of rounds and do well in the skills section,” says Luke Fadel, Grade 10, who has been a member of the VEX Robotics Club since September 2022. “The skills section aims to show how well a driver can pilot their robot and is graded with a number representing (in this case) how many points you score. I also hope to qualify for semi-finals (provincials).”
Fadel and his team stay after school every day to work on their robot and prepare for the upcoming tournament – even coming to school on some weekends to work!
“Our team members come from a wide variety of backgrounds,” says Feghali. “Some of the students in the club also take the Grade 11 robotics course, which focuses on the VEX system used in the club. Students find a great deal of overlap between what they learn in the course and the skills they need in the club, including building and programming the robot.”
<figure id="attachment_13995" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-13995" style="width: 1152px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-vex-robotics-tournament-2023-1.jpg" alt="SMCS VEX Robotics team competing in the 2023 competition." width="1200" height="864" class="size-full wp-image-13995 st-michael-img-1200" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-13995" class="wp-caption-text">SMCS students competing in last year&#8217;s VEX robotics competition.</figcaption></figure>
Luke Galle, Grade 11, has been part of the VEX Robotics Club since 2022 and credits the club with helping him develop a passion for engineering and design.
“I joined the VEX Robotics Club as it provided me with an opportunity to continue to develop my passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,” says Galle. “The club also allowed me to develop my creativity, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills in a supportive environment.”
The iDESIGN Central Toronto VEX Robotics Competition itself also helps improve our students’ growth and development in two main ways.
Feghali explains, “Firstly, students are able to set and work towards goals in the development of a robot. On the actual day, they have a great opportunity to develop their communication and networking skills as they make alliances with other teams from other schools. A second way is that our students play a key role in the setup of the tournament, so they get a first-hand look at the logistics required to put on such a large event.”
“Heading into this upcoming tournament, our team hopes to represent St. Mike&#8217;s proudly and competitively with a fully functioning and efficient robot,” says Galle. “Furthermore, we hope to work collaboratively as a team to accomplish various challenges presented to us at the competition. The VEX Robotics teams strive to represent St. Michael&#8217;s as best we can while embodying the virtues of the school.
‘Overall, my robotics club experience has been amazing. It ignites your curiosity about technology and fosters various skills in a fun and interactive way. What is more fun than building robots, exploring coding, testing creative ideas, and making new friends?”
<figure id="attachment_13996" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-13996" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-vex-robotics-tournament-2023-2.jpg" alt="The 2023 iDESIGN Central Toronto VEX Robotics Competition." width="1200" height="900" class="size-full wp-image-13996 st-michael-img-1200" srcset="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-vex-robotics-tournament-2023-2.jpg 1200w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-vex-robotics-tournament-2023-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-vex-robotics-tournament-2023-2-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-13996" class="wp-caption-text">The 2023 iDESIGN Central Toronto VEX Robotics Competition.</figcaption></figure>

<h1>Recapping Career Day 2024</h1>
Grade 11 Career Day at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) was once again an overwhelming success, bringing together traditional and non-traditional approaches to educate and support SMCS students considering various career paths.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-4.jpg" alt="SMCS Grade 11 Career Day 2024 | Keynote address by Rob Nickerson" width="1200" height="801" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-13946 st-michael-img-1200" srcset="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-4.jpg 1200w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-4-768x513.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" />
This year’s event marked the 20th anniversary of Career Day at SMCS. Keynote speaker Rob Nickerson began the morning with an inspiring session where students worked through a series of role-plays on communication and collaboration in preparation for entering the workplace after secondary or post-secondary studies.
In the afternoon session, students participated in a fireside chat with a diverse slate of guest speakers as well as speed rounds in which students, in groups of 10, had a chance to speak to individuals in diverse industries. Each round lasted 10 minutes, allowing students the opportunity to talk to at least five industry professionals. Students had the chance to ask questions, network with industry experts, and learn about our guest speakers&#8217; educational pathways and job opportunities.
“Grade 11 Career Day was another huge success, and we were fortunate to be led by another accomplished list of speakers representing diverse industries,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, event organizer and SMCS Community Engagement and Learning Lead. “We successfully provided an interactive and inspiring opportunity to foster student engagement and provided students with a better understanding of various industries.”
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-3.jpg" alt="SMCS Grade 11 Career Day 2024 | Fireside chats with professionals" width="1200" height="801" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-13945 st-michael-img-1200" srcset="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-3.jpg 1200w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-3-768x513.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" />
Check out what some of our Grade 11 students had to say:
“The career day that we had was very interesting. It was good to know the different types of career paths different people took and how they got there. I liked the range of jobs that there was. It helped me gain a better understanding of what I want my career path to be.” – James Wright
“Career Day was very interesting and gave me a good understanding of all different kinds of jobs. Each presenter had a different job and story, which was also good because we were given different views on business. Overall, it was a good day, and we learned many things and were shown that you can take many different paths and still get to the same endpoint.” – Kian O&#8217;Connell
“Overall, I would rate Career Day successful because these people were separated into different groups to speak about their jobs, and it was a very unique way to do it. In the end, I rate Career Day very successful and helped students find a path to university.” – Nolan Warfield
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-2.jpg" alt="SMCS Grade 11 Career Day 2024 | Speed round talks with professionals and students" width="1200" height="801" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-13944 st-michael-img-1200" srcset="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-2.jpg 1200w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-career-day-2024-2-768x513.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" />
“I really enjoyed Career Day. I loved how it started off with a lot of energy. The initial speaker did a great job getting our energy up that early in the morning by using his emotions and getting us to do things in groups. The next part of the day was just as good. I liked how it later became a space where we could learn about what it meant to be in fields like business and what you have to do to achieve these goals.” – Giuseppe D&#8217;Addese
“Career Day featured many different opportunities for me and all the other Grade 11 students at SMCS to take advantage of and use the information provided to better understand our future. However, I feel the first half of the day was much less efficient than the second half. I liked how we were able to have an actual conversation with a person already pursuing a certain career, which allowed us to understand what their lifestyle is like.” – Giovanni Di Battista
&#8220;Career day was a great day to learn life lessons from experts across a broad range of fields and their journeys to becoming successful. We also learned lessons about teamwork and the importance of helping our friends out before they begin struggling so much that we are unable to help them. I would like to thank everyone who helped put this day together as well as everyone who took time out of their busy jobs to come talk to us.&#8221; – Theodore Gingras

<h1>Choosing SMCS: The Zibiri-Aliu Family</h1>
The Basilian model of education, a Catholic and spiritual emphasis, the welcoming community-focused atmosphere, and a plethora of co-curricular activities were among the top factors that led the Zibiri-Aliu family to apply to St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) for the 2023-24 academic year.
<img decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-admissions-elan-2.jpg" alt="SMCS Admissions story | Elan and his parents" style="max-width:450px" class="float-left" />
Elan Odhiambo immigrated to Canada from Kenya in the summer of 2023, beginning Grade 9 at SMCS in September.
“We learned about SMCS from our local parish, where we attended mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church,” says Elan’s mom, Winnie Zibiri-Aliu. Both Winnie and Elan’s dad, Osikhena Zibiri-Aliu had already been in Canada for two years completing their master’s degree in law while Elan remained in Kenya under the guardianship of his grandmother. “SMCS sparked our interest because of the dedication to the Catholic faith and education style, where the focus is on mind, body, and spirit.”
As Elan had previously been attending St. Andrew’s School Turi, a Christian school under the British curriculum, he and his family wanted to be sure he had an easy transition to a Canadian school.
“I decided to apply to and accept the SMCS offer because I believed that I needed to further continue my education in an establishment that values my individual welfare and beliefs and SMCS struck gold in my inquiry,” says Elan. “The reason why SMCS stood out as an excellent choice is because of its welcoming atmosphere, great people, intuitive teaching styles, and the overall friendly demeanor every student exhibits towards each other.”
Osikhena adds, “The co-curricular activities were also a deciding factor for us. Our son was already a very good swimmer and represented his school in international swimming competitions, as well as being a talented music enthusiast. Prior to joining SMCS, he played the guitar and the piano and was preparing for Grade 3 ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) exams. When he joined SMCS, he immediately fell in love with a new instrument, the saxophone, and joined the Grade 9 Beginner Band. Given his passion and interest in music, SMCS was a perfect fit!”
Elan was also involved in the admissions process and was able to take part in virtual sessions and interviews before arriving in Canada.
“The admissions process for Elan was quite seamless as he was engaged virtually,” says Winnie. “We learned about the wonderful SMCS community and alumni, as well as all the great causes that the SMCS community is involved in. This is a strong testament to the good formation provided, to enable the boys to grow into tomorrow&#8217;s leaders!”
Once Elan had arrived in Canada, the family was able to take part in an in-person tour of the school.
“The admissions team was very patient and supportive and walked us through the process with the utmost professionalism,” says Osikhena. “We had some delays with Elan&#8217;s permanent residence due to immigration backlogs, but as soon as the delays were cleared, we were able to complete the registration process and get him admitted.”
<figure id="attachment_13930" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-13930" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-admissions-elan-1.jpg" alt="SMCS Admissions story | Elan playing sax in Gr. 9 Beginner Band" width="1200" height="800" class="size-full wp-image-13930 st-michael-img-1200" srcset="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-admissions-elan-1.jpg 1200w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-admissions-elan-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/smcs-admissions-elan-1-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-13930" class="wp-caption-text">Elan playing saxophone with the Grade 9 Beginner Band during this year&#8217;s Christmas Concerts.</figcaption></figure>
Since beginning his SMCS journey, Elan’s parents note that they have seen their son thriving, doing well academically, building friendships, and that he’s excited to come to school every day.
“In my time at SMCS, my experience has been full of adventure, friendship, ingenuity, and intuitiveness. Although I&#8217;ve been in SMCS for a few months up to this point, I have found my way into numerous activities, such as the Aviation Club, which I assist in running from time to time. I am also a member of the Grade 9 Beginner Band, the SMCS Swim Team, and Debate Club,” says Elan.
“Lastly, I would like to add that even though my personal experience in adjusting to the new environment was difficult, as I left some great friends and family back home, coming to SMCS and having wonderful friends and mates has really made that process much easier!”
His mom adds, “We believe our son is in good hands at SMCS, and we look forward to him achieving his best during his time as a student, to equip him with the requisite skills (both technical and soft skills) for his future career pursuits!”

“This year, we will continue our efforts to enhance opportunities for our students to engage with our Career Day professionals in smaller settings, fostering more meaningful discussions,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, Community Engagement and Learning Lead. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to educate and expose our students not only to traditional professions but also to gain a sense of the many diverse and future-focused opportunities.”
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, January 30 and will kick off with a morning session led by keynote speaker Rob Nickerson – an actor, writer, producer, and teacher best known as a pioneer in using improvisation as a teaching tool in non-traditional applications.
“We are excited to welcome Rob back for a second year. He’s a high-energy and extremely interactive, improv-based speaker who will set the tone for an engaging and enlightening student-focused experience,” says Lumsden. “Rob’s unique approach to learning has helped thousands of professionals maximize their creative and collaborative potential with the skills and techniques learned through improvisation.”

In the afternoon session, students will have the chance to interact with more than ten professionals from diverse fields, including medicine, performance coaching, arts, technology, business, and more. <h1>SMCS Captures Top Prize in Annual Basketball Tournament</h1>
The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Sr. Basketball team captured gold in the 61st annual Dan Prendergast Senior Basketball Invitational tournament, which highlighted some of the best teams in the province, from Ottawa’s Ashbury College to Kitchener’s St. Mary’s High School.
“The tournament is named after our dear coach, Dan Prendergast, OSM, who was more than a coach to many of us,” says Kirt Charter ’82, teacher and coach of the Sr. Basketball team. “He would have been happy to see the level of skill and competition displayed in this year’s tournament.”
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/smcs-dan-prendergast-basketball-3.jpg" alt="SMCS Sr. Basketball team with the championship trophy at the Dan Prendergast Invitational Basketball Tournament" width="1200" height="800" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-13866 st-michael-img-1200" srcset="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/smcs-dan-prendergast-basketball-3.jpg 1200w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/smcs-dan-prendergast-basketball-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/smcs-dan-prendergast-basketball-3-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" />
Prendergast served the SMCS community for over 50 years in various capacities, including teaching, counselling, administration, and coaching basketball for 27 years.
Despite the new and changing landscape of Canadian basketball with a profusion of ‘prep’ teams across the country, this tournament remains one that many coaches hold in high esteem and continues attracting top programmes.
“I think our student-athletes understand the legacy and the importance of winning our own tournament, which we hadn’t done since 2015,” he says. “Luckily, this is the time of year when coaches are banking on everything coming together at the right time for peak performance. Our defense was solid all tournament long, but particularly stellar in the semi-final game against a well-coached and talented Ashbury team.”

The tournament took place over three days from January 11 to 13, 2024, on the Paul Dignan Court at SMCS and brought in competitive teams from 11 schools across Ontario.
“In the championship game, the behind-the-scenes news was the physical state of tournament MVP, Phoenyx Wyse, Grade 11, who was playing provincial level volleyball games in between tournament games, as well as the readiness of the game’s leading scorer, Ryan Walsh, Grade 11, who rolled his ankle during warm-ups,” says Charter.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/smcs-dan-prendergast-basketball-1.jpg" alt="SMCS Sr. Basketball team playing in the Dan Prendergast Sr. Basketball Invitational Tournament." width="1200" height="801" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-13864 st-michael-img-1200" srcset="https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/smcs-dan-prendergast-basketball-1.jpg 1200w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/smcs-dan-prendergast-basketball-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://d97pdw6wu0.wpdns.site/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/smcs-dan-prendergast-basketball-1-768x513.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" />
The Blue Raiders got off to a tumultuous start, anchored by their defense, leading to a 14-point first quarter lead. However, the team knew St. Martin had played a strong second half in their previous games. True to form, St. Martin came back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Behind some good shooting and consistent defense down the stretch, SMCS managed to pull away and secure the victory.
“Coach (Matt) Pagano ’92 and I are very proud of the effort and the team play we saw displayed and are looking forward to seeing the players execute at that level and better as we enter the second half of the season,” he says.
