Career Day 2025: A Day of Inspiration and Insight
Career Day 2025 provided St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Grade 11 students with an engaging and insightful experience, offering a glimpse into various career paths through interactive sessions and meaningful discussions.
The event kicked off with keynote guest speaker Rob Nickerson and featured an interactive and energetic improv workshop that set the tone for the day.
“Through humour and creative exercises, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, collaborate, and hone essential communication skills—fundamental attributes for success in any career,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, Community Engagement and Learning Lead and event coordinator. “Career Day 2025 proved to be a tremendous success, leaving students inspired, informed, and motivated for their future careers.”
In the afternoon, students participated in two distinct career exploration sessions. Half of the Grade 11s attended a fireside chat with industry professionals, where experienced speakers shared their career journeys, challenges, and successes. These sessions provided a valuable opportunity for students to gain firsthand knowledge and ask insightful questions about their aspirations.
“With what I learned at career day, I was able to gain key insight into fields that I had not previously considered, such as medicine, personal fitness and law,” adds Alexander Czarnota. “Mr. Connelly was able to open my mind to some new ideas and careers. Overall, it was a great experience that was engaging and fun for me as a student.”
Simultaneously, the other half of the grade participated in speed networking sessions, engaging in quick, impactful conversations with professionals from diverse industries. This fast-paced format allowed students to explore multiple career options while sharpening their networking and interpersonal skills.
“My favourite part of Career Day was the speed round, as I was able to speak one-on-one with the person and ask any personal questions I was curious about,” says Alexandros Kontos. “I gained a lot of knowledge on many different career paths, which I know will be helpful for my future.”
A standout moment of the day was the participation of Caia Osmond, a Grade 11 student from Loretto College and the founder of Ca-Boom Sweets.
“As the youngest professional in the event’s 21-year history, Osmond offered an inspiring example of entrepreneurship and determination, demonstrating that success can begin at any age,” adds Lumsden.
In total, SMCS welcomed 11 guest speakers who shared their expertise and experiences, broadening students’ understanding of the evolving workforce and the diverse career opportunities available to them.
“From improv lessons to life advice, Rob Nickerson gave me and all Grade 11 students perspective towards the future,” says Gavin Kelly. “As we connected with our classmates, I learned the importance of social skills and personal relationships with our peers. We all thank Rob for being so personable and giving us a time to remember.”
A special thank you to Rob Nickerson, Caia Osmond, our guest speakers, and all those who contributed to making this event an invaluable experience for the students.
