Christmas Concerts to Celebrate SMCS Musical Talents

Sounds of Christmas will fill the St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Centre for the Arts on November 27, 28, and 30 as the annual SMCS Christmas Concerts hit our stage, showcasing the talent and dedication of more than 280 student-musicians from Grades 8-12.

“Some of the world’s most inspired music compositions come from the season of Advent and bring a special meaning to Christians everywhere,” says Jamie Oatt, Head of the Music Department. “This opportunity allows us to perform some incredible music by some of the world’s famous composers as well as traditional carols treated in some really creative ways by new arrangers of band repertoire.”

The celebration of music will kick off on Monday, November 27, as SMCS welcomes local elementary schools for a concert featuring performances from the Sr. Jazz Ensemble and Sr. Concert Band.

“We are thankful for the opportunity and always look forward to welcoming students from elementary schools in the neighbourhood,” says Oatt. “It’s an educational concert where we not only perform a variety of selections from our upcoming concerts, but also take the time to demonstrate the various instruments of a typical concert band and jazz ensemble and offer time for a Q & A with our guests.”

On November 28, the musical showcase continues with performances from the Grade 8 Band at 6:30 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. concert featuring the Sr. Concert Band, who will be joined by the SMCS Drumline and the Holy Name of Mary College School (HNMCS) Sr. Choir.

“The finale will be a combined performance of our Sr. Concert Band and the HNMCS Sr. Choir. Their selection is a song made famous by Canadian composer David Foster with singer Natalie Cole and recording artists Amy Grant and Michael Bublé. This piece seemed to resonate this year as it speaks of a wish for peace, love, a world without war, where right would always win.”

The final evening will occur on Thursday, November 30, at 7:30 p.m. as our Grade 9 Beginner, Grade 9 Advanced, and Grade 10 bands share the stage with our Intermediate and Sr. Jazz ensembles.
