Concluding the Spring 2025 Athletics Season
With the final provincial competitions of the 2024-25 school year wrapping up over the first week of June, St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) acknowledges another successful athletics season and an overall great year in athletics.
“Following very exciting fall and winter seasons, the spring season, despite being a wet one, would allow our student-athletes and teams to showcase their talents and complete another successful year for St. Michael’s College School in athletics,” says Alex Frescura ’92, Director of Athletics. “The Annual Athletic Awards Banquet was again at capacity, allowing the community to honour an outstanding graduating class, and the achievements of all 55 teams representing St. Michael’s across 20 sports.”

Badminton
The Senior Varsity Badminton team had a strong 2025 season, highlighted by the CISAA Championship at Trinity College School, where three of the four flights advanced to the semi-finals. James Zhang (Singles 1) earned bronze after a hard-fought match, while Steven He (Singles 2) placed fourth. The standout performance came from Carlos Lui and Maxi Li (Doubles 1), who defeated Upper Canada College (UCC) in a tense final to win CISAA gold. The team’s dedication, growth, and unity throughout the season resulted in a top-three overall finish.

Baseball
The SMCS Varsity Blues Baseball team wrapped up an unforgettable season, finishing as proud finalists in a hard-fought campaign. Battling through adversity with heart and determination, the team came together to deliver one of the strongest performances in recent years. The season ended in a narrow 3-0 loss in the championship game, a contest that showcased the grit, skill, and spirit that defined this group. The Blues walked off the field with their heads held high, having proven their resilience and strength as a unit.

Beach Volleyball
The spring volleyball season at SMCS was defined by dominance, growth, and global experience. Our indoor teams went undefeated across four tournaments, while select athletes trained in Cuba with the Cuban Junior National Team, gaining valuable international exposure. Back home, students competed in beach tournaments, including our signature ‘Play with a Pro’ event, where they were paired with professional and national team athletes.

Golf
The Blue Eagles built on their fall success with a strong spring season, including a trip to Houston for the Basil Bowl. At the CISAA Championship at Lionhead, the team battled tough conditions with focus and grit. Seniors Viggo Juulsgaard and Luke Olynick led the way, supported by strong performances from Joseph Totino, Tyler Young, and standout rookie Ethan Reid. The juniors earned CISAA bronze, while the seniors claimed their third straight CISAA gold.

Lacrosse
U14
The U14 Blue Gaels Lacrosse team had a stellar season, overcoming early challenges and winning three overtime games to finish the regular season 8-0. After a semi-final win, they defeated rival St. Andrew’s in the CISAA Finals with strong defence, standout goaltending by Brin Mowbray, and key goals from Maxwell Jackson, Isaac Veale, Jackson Bennett, and Thomas Wheatly. Jonathan Stark dominated faceoffs, while Kingsley Wellwood, Everett Ahola, and Sidney Scott anchored the defence.

Varsity
The Varsity Blue Gaels entered 2025 to build on last year’s CISAA championship. They opened with competitive games in Buffalo and Rochester, then earned a 4-2 record and silver medal in CPLL league play. A highlight was their trip to Ohio, where they faced top-tier teams like Archbishop Moeller, St. Xavier, and Western Reserve. The season ended in a hard-fought 9-8 overtime loss to UCC in the CISAA playoffs.

Rugby
Junior
This season, the Junior Rugby team turned last year’s lessons into a breakthrough season. With returning players bringing experience and hunger, they climbed to third place out of nine teams and earned a spot in the final four. A standout 12–0 semifinal win over rivals St. Andrew’s College sent them to the championship, where they fell to an undefeated Hillfield Strathallan squad. Despite the loss, their journey —built over 42 practices and 12 matches—created a bond of brotherhood, defined by intelligence, grit, and heart.

Senior
The Shamrock Senior Rugby Team had an impressive season, competing in 12 games with a record of seven wins, three losses, and two ties. The team’s success can be attributed to effective leadership from their captains, Thomas Giaouris, Grade 12, and Joshua Foss, Grade 11. Their guidance and teamwork helped foster a strong team spirit throughout the season. Notably, Ross Bruno was recognized as the most improved player, demonstrating significant growth and skill development despite being new to rugby.

Softball
With the graduation of most of last year’s CISAA silver medal team, this season marked a rebuilding year in a highly competitive league. While the results did not reflect the team’s effort, the coaches commended the commitment and determination shown by all players. Valuable experience was gained, and the foundation was laid for future success. With many Grade 7s set to return, the team is excited for a promising and more competitive season next year.

Tennis
The SMCS Varsity Tennis team’s 2025 season was short and competitive. The mixture of veterans and newcomers paid off well for the team. The team finished the season with a 4-2 record and advanced to the CISAA finals. Overall, they placed third at CISAA finals. This season had exemplary players from Grades 7-12. Graduating students Robert Sharratt and Joseph Tatone both placed third in their categories at the CISAA Finals.

Track and Field
U14
The Grade 7 and 8 track and field season was marked by dedication, teamwork, and steady progress, culminating in a memorable championship meet at York University. Despite rainy conditions, student-athletes showed resilience and delivered standout performances. The U14 4×100-metre relay team—Maxwell Jackson, Keenan Archer, Lane Scott, and Joseph McGrath—impressed with their strong showing.

Varsity
After a strong regular season and citywide events, the Varsity Track and Field team triumphed at the CISAA Championships, winning both Junior and Senior Boys Divisions. Standout athletes included Jackson Ward, Ben Maiese, Carson Walsh, Payton Szego, and Matthew Kmecz, who won multiple gold medals in both distance and sprint events. Tobias Sealy dominated sprints, while relay teams secured silver and gold, highlighted by the Senior 4×400-metre team’s blazing win. Twenty-five athletes qualified for the Metro Regionals, and from there, another nine went on to represent SMCS at the OFSAA provincial championships, completing another fantastic season for this historic programme.

Ultimate
U14
This season, our U14 Ultimate team, full of new players, brought heart, hustle, and fun to every game. Each player contributed uniquely—whether with a great catch, solid defence, or encouraging cheers. Although the scoreboard did not always favour them, the team demonstrated growth, resilience, and a strong spirit throughout.
Varsity
The 2025 BSMC Ultimate team, the only co-ed sport at SMCS, featured SMCS boys and Bishop Strachan School (BSS) girls, and had a season marked by dedication, teamwork, and memorable highlights. With early morning practices beginning in March, the team grew in skill and spirit. Season highlights included strong tournament performances, their first-ever overnight trip to Kingston, a thrilling Universe point win at UCC to secure a playoff spot, a dominant victory at Appleby capped off with a Lake Ontario dip, and a determined playoff effort against an experienced team.
