Five Fast Facts: Fall Drama – A Christmas Carol
Next week, the curtain will rise on the annual Fall Drama at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) as they perform a radio play version of Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol.
This marks the third consecutive year that SMCS will present a radio play, following the success of Frankenstein in 2022 and Dracula in 2023.
“The radio play medium has been a wonderful way to utilize our Centre for the Arts and its ability to create various theatrical technical effects,” says Jamie Oatt, Fall Drama Producer and Head of Music. “It also allows as many students to be involved as possible on stage and in the booth as actors, Foley artists, and stage crew.
“We have some really effective visual and audio effects in store for our audiences as we transform our stage into a 1940s radio broadcast station and, at times… the streets of London.”
The heartwarming radio play adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale brings to the stage the miserable Ebenezer Scrooge as he faces the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future on Christmas Eve. Through these encounters, Scrooge is transformed, learning the value of compassion, generosity, and the true spirit of Christmas.
Here are five fast facts about the upcoming performances:
- The Foley team of six students will bring every sound effect to life in real-time, just as it would have been done in old-time radio shows (80-100 years ago) like The Shadow, Dick Tracy, and Sherlock Holmes.
- The crew will be repurposing elements from SMCS’ 2019 production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap to recreate the cozy interior of an English country manor as the backdrop for the voice actors.
- Grade 12 student Eddie Teng will once again perform a captivating, live musical score to accompany every moment of the show.
- Writer Philip Grecian has skillfully edited this timeless Dickens classic Christmas story into a one-hour play that captures the true essence of Scrooge’s journey to enlightenment.
- The production features nine actors (seven SMCS students and two female actors representing Holy Name of Mary College School and Oakwood Collegiate).
Performance schedule:
- Wednesday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m.
- Friday, November 1 (feeder school matinee) at 12:45 p.m.
