Henry Hicks ’23 Combines Soccer and Film Studies at NYU

Henry Hicks ’23, a talented student-athlete and brand-new alumnus of St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), is headed south of the border to pursue his dream career and the sport he grew up playing.

“I chose New York University (NYU) for two main reasons. Firstly, their film programme is among the best in the world, and for an aspiring young filmmaker, I feel fortunate that I can pursue my dream at one of the best establishments possible,” says Hicks, who is enrolled in their film and television programme. “The second reason would be that it is simply New York, a place where great things happen.”

Henry Hicks was the team captain of the Sr. Soccer Team during his Grade 12 year at SMCS.

At his SMCS graduation in June 2023, Hicks received a Basilian Book Award for maintaining an average of over 90 per cent in Grade 12. He also graduated with the St. Thomas More Society Award for consistently maintaining an average of 80 per cent or higher for his entire high school career and received the St. Michael’s Medal in Media Studies for his outstanding achievements in the programme.

“Henry has been a tremendous member of the St. Michael’s soccer programme,” says Miko Romano, teacher and coach of the Sr. Soccer Team. “Always giving his best for the squad, he would even play out of position at times to help the coaches and team strategically. As a team captain, he helped lead the team to a successful season this past year.”

As he heads to NYU in September 2023, Hicks is getting set to join the NYU Violets men’s soccer team as an attacker.

“The soccer team has had success in recent years, reaching the NCAA D3 soccer final tournament consistently, which is what really attracted me to NYU soccer,” says Hicks. “The head coach, Kim Wyant was Team USA’s women’s team starting goalie on several occasions and was inaugurated into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. There is much to be excited about with NYU soccer.”

Growing up, Hicks played for Mooredale Soccer Club and the North Toronto Nitros before dawning his blue SMCS Azzurri jersey.

“My St. Mike’s soccer experience has always been some of my most prominent soccer memories,” he says. “Winning CISAA in Grade 9 and going to OFSAA twice, just to name a few. The team has brought me closer to my friends and introduced me to people I would have otherwise not had the privilege of meeting. I won’t be forgetting the SMCS Azzurri any time soon.”

At this year’s Athletic Awards Banquet, Hicks took home top honours for his talent and dedication to the sport.

“I was fortunate to be named both the soccer team Co-MVP and given the Marc Santi ’01 award for exemplifying sports leadership,” says Hicks. “I am incredibly honoured even to be thought of as a leader among my peers, and I greatly cherish this award .”
