Highlights and Achievements from Winter Athletics Season
This winter, 260 student-athletes competed in the winter athletics season, representing St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) on 17 teams across six sports. It was another season filled with many personal and team successes, highlighted by multiple individual, league, and provincial championships.
“This was an excellent winter season with individual and team successes across the board! The weather certainly did its part to give us fantastic conditions for our outdoor sports,” says Alex Frescura ’92, Director of Athletics. “Congratulations to all the student-athletes and coaches on their achievements, and to the support staff for their continued hard work and dedication.”

U14 Alpine Skiing
Our U14 Alpine Ski Team gave it their all at the CISAA Championship race at Mansfield. David Barrette finished with an outstanding individual third-place finish, earning him a bronze medal. Barrette, along with teammates Tyler Kerr and Maxwell Merkley, placed in the top 10. With Alex Chouinard, Bennett Brown, and Adrian Fedchun barely seconds behind, they helped clinch a second-place team finish for a silver medal.

Varsity Alpine Skiing
Both Varsity Alpine Ski Teams landed on the podium this year. At the CISAA Championships, the school-trained team finished second, while the club-trained team placed third. Individually, Maksym Fedchun won a CISAA bronze medal, and Anderson Fisher represented SMCS at the OFSAA Championships. Kai Chuang won a bronze for his third-place overall finish in the club-trained category.

U14 Basketball DI
This year’s U14 D1 Basketball team was in a class of its own. They rolled to a 13-1 overall record and captured the D1 CISAA title and Appleby College Invitational. Standout performances from a core of players who will be big parts of the SMCS basketball programme for years to come.

U14 Basketball DII
The U14 DII Basketball team was a wonderful group of hardworking players who improved measurably over the course of the season. The team started the season strong, boasting an opening 5-0 record and putting all in the division on notice before losing a hard-fought CISAA quarterfinal.

Jr. Basketball DI
This year’s Jr. D1 Basketball team returned to the OSBA D-League—the best junior basketball league in the country—for the first time since 2019. With a young roster, the team’s play put the league on notice that SMCS will be a force in years to come. The team also reached the second round of the NPH U16 playoffs, repeated as champions of the Silverthorne Invitational, and reached the consolation finals of the All-Ontario Catholic tournament.

Jr. Basketball DII
The season was exceptional, highlighted by an undefeated run and a CISAA Championship victory. The team dominated league play and defeated several strong out-of-league opponents in exhibition games, showcasing their lightning-fast pace, elite reaction time, and unrivalled skill. Captain Hunter Salo led our starters—Alex Bottoni, Carson Walsh, Lucas Maglantay, Nathanael Burnett, and Neven Simunac—to victory every game with outstanding leadership and consistency. The team also built remarkable chemistry and sportsmanship throughout the year.

Sr. Basketball
This season was a true test of dedication, perseverance, and team spirit. Over the course of 46 games, the Sr. Basketball team faced obstacles with determination—competing shorthanded at times due to injuries and adapting after being unable to continue play in the team’s regular league. Despite these challenges, they continued to rise to the occasion, showing resilience and a commitment to improving every day. One of the highlights of the season came during a team trip to Quebec, where they played some of their best basketball. The team earned a hard-fought victory against a strong École St-Gabriel Escadron squad and battled competitively against a much taller Collège Notre-Dame de Lourdes team. As one of the younger groups in the NPH Prep League, this season provided invaluable experience that will serve as a foundation for future success.

Curling DI
The DI Curling Team showed strong communication, solid teamwork, and a competitive mindset throughout the season. Skip Daniyal Ahmad guided play with a clear strategy and good use of the hammer. Vice Harris Kim supported well and delivered key draws and take-outs when needed. Second Ezra Jirou Burce stood out for his strong sweeping, helping keep stones on line and in play. Lead Chris Stefanini consistently set up ends with accurate guards, giving the team an early edge. They finished the season in the quarter-finals after a close and hard-fought game.

Curling DII
The DII Curling Team brought together players from all corners of SMCS and built a cohesive and competitive team! Colin Cheung and Harry Ferris took turns leading the team as the skip, with powerful takeouts and strategy. Aidan Cruze and Alistair Cline started each end strong by delivering precise guards and draws.

U14 Hockey DI: Team Blue
The U14 Hockey Team Blue enjoyed a successful season marked by strong wins, hard-fought battles, and valuable lessons learned through adversity. Their passion for the game was felt all season long as team energy, grit, teamwork, and sacrifice drove their success. Team Blue’s hard work and determination earned them a well-deserved spot in the CISAA Finals, where they captured the silver medal, capping off an impressive season.

U14 Hockey DII: Team White
The U14 Hockey Team White delivered an unforgettable year, going undefeated through the regular season and scoring an impressive 64 goals in 10 games. Their success came from true teamwork—built on sportsmanship, character, hard work, dedication, and positive spirit on and off the ice. The team’s incredible run carried them all the way to the CISAA Finals, where they battled hard in a tough gold medal game and earned a proud silver medal.

U16 Blue Hockey Team
This season marked another successful year for the U16 Blue Hockey team. The team finished with an impressive 6-2-0 record in CISAA league play, finishing second overall. After an overtime win in the semi-final over Crestwood, the team travelled to St. Andrew’s College for the championship game, marking the 15th consecutive appearance in the gold medal match. In another thrilling overtime victory, the squad captured gold and returned the championship to SMCS. Other season highlights included a bronze medal in the SMCS Junior Invitational Tournament.

U16 White Hockey Team
The U16 White Hockey team showed what it truly means to compete with heart. While the season didn’t always reflect the results they were capable of, their grit and tenacity never wavered. Game after game, they battled hard, supporting one another and growing stronger as a unit. When it mattered most, Team White rose to the occasion, proving that resilience, teamwork, and determination define success far beyond the scoreboard.

U18 Prep Hockey
The U18 AAA Prep Hockey team has wrapped up its inaugural season, setting a standard of excellence, commitment, and resilience for future years. Competing in their first season together, the team consistently rose to the challenge, going head-to-head with some of the top programmes across North America. Beyond the results, what stood out most was the growth. Players developed not only their skills and hockey IQ, but also a deeper understanding of teamwork, accountability, and what it takes to compete against the very best.

Snowboarding
The SMCS Blue Yetis Snowboard team had an unforgettable season, recapturing the CISAA Boys Team Championship. The 15-member team competed every Wednesday, showcasing racing, carving, and aerial skills throughout the year. Five riders—Hayden Fraser, Matteo Muchalov, Ben Luborsky, Chris Gula, and Nick Jensen—qualified for OFSAA Championships, where the Blue Yetis made history as the first team ever to win three consecutive OFSAA Snowboarding Championships. Out of 131 snowboarders, Muchalov finished 15th, Fraser 17th, and Jensen 20th. The team carved their names permanently into both SMCS and OFSAA history books.

U14 Swim Team
The U14 Swim Team had a strong and determined 2025–26 season, highlighted by consistent improvement and competitive finishes. The boys delivered impressive results at CISAA meets, culminating in a successful showing at the CISAA Championships, where they finished fourth in the U13 200 free relay. Individually, Charlie Strachan led the way with multiple podium finishes, including bronze in the U13 50 breast, while Matthew Iwasjuk earned a fifth-place finish in the 50 fly and several top 10 results. The team demonstrated resilience and commitment throughout the winter season.
Varsity Swim Team
The Varsity Swim Team had an outstanding and competitive 2025–26 season marked by steady growth and strong championship performances. The team earned multiple podium finishes across CISAA meets and placed fourth in both the open and U16 divisions at the CISAA Championships, finishing fifth overall in the combined men’s division among 19 schools. Eamon Zietsma captured gold in the U16 50 back, while James Wood earned two silvers and a bronze; several swimmers also qualified for OFSAA. The season concluded with five swimmers advancing to OFSAA in Windsor.
