Luik Commits to High Point University for Lacrosse
Cole Luik, a Grade 12 student-athlete at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), has made the exciting decision to continue both his academic and athletic career at High Point University in North Carolina next year.
With a clear vision for his future, Luik chose High Point for its unique blend of academic and athletic opportunities, as well as its potential for personal growth.
“I chose High Point for multiple reasons, including its experience-based approach to teaching, which really appealed to me,” Luik says. “Business students at High Point get the opportunity to gain hands-on management experience with real businesses on and around campus. This will prepare me to hit the ground running as I enter the workforce after graduation. On top of that, High Point has a beautiful campus and the nation’s top-rated dorms.”
Luik is an honour roll student at SMCS, a member of the school’s varsity hockey programme, and is heavily involved with the Politics Club.
“At SMCS, there’s a culture of excellence that has motivated me to be the best person I can be, both academically and athletically,” says Luik. “St. Mike’s also teaches you to be a good person above all else. College lacrosse coaches don’t just look at your academic and athletic abilities; they want to know what kind of person you are off the field and outside of school. I’m grateful to SMCS for helping me build my character, so when coaches call to ask about me, they hear that I’m respectful and hardworking.”
At High Point, Luik will join the Earl N. Phillips School of Business to pursue a major in finance.
“Finance interests me because it allows me to use my analytical skills when evaluating companies and making trade decisions, while also engaging my creative and social skills when managing clients,” he explains. “I like the idea of contributing to something bigger than myself and helping to build and grow a company.”
On the lacrosse field, Luik is equally excited about joining an emerging programme, which has just completed its 11th season.
“High Point recently hired coaches John Crawley from Johns Hopkins and Alex Ready from Duke, both of whom had impressive college careers,” says Luik, who will play defence and long-stick midfielder. “I look forward to contributing to the team’s goal of winning a national championship.”
Luik’s journey in lacrosse began at age seven with the Toronto Beaches Lacrosse Club, where he went on to capture two provincial “A” field lacrosse championships. His time at St. Michael’s has also been instrumental in his development.
“My experience with the varsity lacrosse team at St. Mike’s has been amazing. With practices all year round and a competitive schedule, including a trip to the national prep championship, the St. Mike’s lacrosse programme has helped me grow as a player and gain exposure to college coaches. Mr. Dineley ’03, with his years of playing professionally and coaching the national team, has been a huge help to me on the defensive side of the ball.”
Cole Luik’s dedication on the field and in the classroom makes his future at High Point University full of promise as he embarks on the next chapter of his journey.
“Cole has been an integral part of the programme for four years and will be a key part of our senior leadership group this season,” says Angus Dineley, Head of the English Department and coach of the Sr. Blue Gaels lacrosse team. “He’s a quiet leader and accountable teammate who sets the tone in practices and games. As a player, he’s a dynamic and versatile defender who can shut down opposing scorers while also making plays in transition. He is the epitome of the St. Michael’s student-athlete. We’re very lucky to have him and can’t wait to see his future successes at High Point and beyond.”
