SMCS Celebrates the Beginning of Advent

The annual Advent in the Courtyard evening had it all, from Mass, caroling, and tree lighting, to the blessing of the tree and crèche—and it was topped off with a timely taste of winter weather, complete with a magical snowfall. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the season of Advent and the spirit of Christmas.

Check out our photo gallery and read through a selection of testimonials from those in attendance:

Advent in the courtyard is one of the most special experiences we have at St. Mike’s. Gathering as a community and celebrating the holiday season reminds me how powerful and connected the SMCS community is. Being able to light the tree surrounded by family and friends was a surreal experience and is one of my most special memories of my time at SMCS.”
– Matthew Kmecz, Grade 12, Student Government President

“Advent in the Courtyard was an experience not just of performance but of connection. I was able to come together with many others, not just as a practicing Catholic, but also as a musician, student, friend, and peer – furthering my connection to those around me, making the SMCS experience even better than it already was.”
– Marco Boci, Grade 11

“Christmas in the courtyard was a lovely experience as the halls were filled with music that my fellow band members and I contributed to. As the night progressed, many people began to gather within the school, which really brought a warm and lovely feeling. Members of the bands gathered in the courtyard to play Christmas Carols, the Christmas Tree was lit, and Santa appeared in the courtyard, bringing all the children joy, the band members continued to push on for two more frost-bitten songs. By the time all the outside activities were concluded, everyone rushed back into the warmth of the school for some lovely treats that were gifted by our parents and our lovely cafe faculty. Once the event concluded with Big Blue, our advanced jazz band, everyone thanked us for a wonderful night, grabbed some goodies and hopefully had a lovely drive home in the icy conditions.”
– Jacob Shaver, Grade 12

“Advent in the courtyard is one of those experiences we have at St. Mike’s that you don’t really experience anywhere else. Being there firsthand, and able to assist in the blessing of the tree surrounded by friends, teachers, and family was one of those memories at St. Mike’s that I’ll never forget. Celebrating the holiday season with the community really highlights the bond and sense of togetherness we share at SMCS.”
– Giuseppe D’Addese, Grade 12, Student Government Vice President

“Advent in the Courtyard was a truly magical experience for our family. The light snowfall set the perfect scene as we bundled up in the crisp weather to enjoy a wonderful evening of caroling, reflection, connecting with friends, and of course, great food! The highlight was undoubtedly the lighting of the Christmas tree, which brought smiles to both children and adults alike. It was a beautiful way to kick off the holiday season together and left us with a sense of deep gratitude to be part of this incredible community!”
Andrew and Christina Fedchun, Parents

“Between marshmallows in my hot chocolate and light snow falling, this was the most magical Advent in the Courtyard yet. Nothing puts my family in the spirit like caroling, a tree lighting and a quick visit from Santa! We are so grateful for our beautiful SMCS community.”
– Krysta Davies Foss, Parent, SMCSPA President

“Advent in the Courtyard is honestly one of my favourite school events. There’s something so special about the SMCS community coming together to sing carols, bond with other families and the amazing staff, and truly embrace the Christmas spirit. That’s what makes our school community so unique. My family looks forward to this event every year!”
– Anna Kaminska, Parent

“The Advent in the Courtyard has become a ritual every December. It is a heart warming and spiritual event that helps us open our hearts to the spirit of the holiday season. From the liturgy, to the boys’ band Christmas music, and seasonal treats, we are grateful for the opportunity to attend this event every year.”
