Spring Sports Successes Close out 2026 Athletic Calendar
The spring season brings to a close a very successful year for St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) athletics. In what is perennially the busiest time of the athletic year, SMCS saw 300 student-athletes compete for the double blue across 18 teams.
“In easily our busiest season, a tremendous effort was put forth by our coaches and support staff to give our student-athletes the best opportunity for success,” says Alex Frescura ’92, Director of Athletics. “Across the board, the teams were competitive, returning home with a lot of hardware, but most importantly, great memories with their peers. The Annual Athletic Banquet featured a range of alumni guest speakers, highlighting how their SMCS experience shaped their academic and professional journeys.”

Badminton
The badminton programme closed out a strong season at the CISAA Championships, with both the Junior and Varsity squads competing well. Junior athletes earned top-five doubles finishes, while the Varsity squad delivered at the championship level as a team. Joseph Pau earned silver in junior singles 2, Harry Sheridan finished fourth in varsity singles 3, and Max Li and Carlos Liu defended their CISAA doubles 1 gold title — proving last year was no accident.

Baseball – Varsity
A cold, wet spring threw every obstacle it could at the Senior Baseball team. Despite a shortened regular season, the squad earned their spot in the CISAA final four as the third seed on the strength of a gritty 8–6 win over St. Andrew’s College (SAC). Despite a narrow loss in the semi-final, it was a great season for the group.

Beach Volleyball
Junior
The Junior Beach Volleyball programme had a strong showing at its annual tournament. Belmond Mao and Samuel Hardess-McDonald pushed through to Division 1 Tier 1, finishing fifth against stiff competition, while Dylan Bultje and Vaughan Koonings were the standouts of the day, claiming the Division 1 Tier 2 title.
Senior
At the annual tournament hosted by Danforth Tech, the Senior Beach Volleyball team competed well throughout the day. Stefan Lukowski and Edmond Mao were the standouts, advancing to the Tier 2 quarter-finals and competing with confidence.

Golf
U14
The inaugural U14 Golf Team made an impressive debut this season, expanding one of St. Michael’s most decorated athletic programmes to a new generation of athletes. After dropping their opening match to SAC, the team came back with a statement — defeating them 3–1 at the CISAA Championships at Cardinal Golf Club. Team MVP Nathan Wong anchored the season with dominant performances throughout, earning a call-up to the Junior Varsity squad.

Varsity
The Varsity Golf Team carried their fall momentum into an outstanding spring season, competing at the prestigious Champions Invitational in California against more than 50 top North American programmes and finishing tied for 22nd. Back home, they claimed their fourth consecutive CISAA gold medal while shattering the team record with a 276, 9-under par. Matthew Simpson and Joseph Totino shared the individual CISAA title at 4-under. At OFSAA, the Blue Eagles claimed their second straight provincial championship, with Totino adding a bronze medal on the individual stage. On the Junior side, Connor Sands and Ethan Reid led the team to CISAA bronze.

Lacrosse
U14
With most of last year’s championship roster having moved on, the U14 Lacrosse Team exceeded all expectations — going a perfect 7–0 in the regular season before capturing CISAA gold with a dominant final performance over SAC. The win came thanks to strong defence from Kingsley Wellwood, Frederic Smith, Max Moro, and Maxwell Merkley, outstanding goaltending from Brin Mowbray, dominant face-off work from Lukas Kaberle, four goals from Thomas Wheatley, and a highlight-reel finish from Gabe De Carvalho.

Varsity
The Varsity Blue Gaels built on last year’s CISAA Championship with continued programme growth this spring, opening the season against elite programmes in New York and Ohio before returning home for league play. The season ended with a heartbreaking playoff loss to SAC, but what this group built in resilience and commitment to one another goes well beyond any single result.

Rugby
U16
With most of last year’s veterans graduating to the Senior programme, this year’s Junior Rugby squad welcomed a new generation to the programme. They finished on a genuine high by going undefeated on their final day of competition and winning the consolation tournament in St. Catharines. Every match was a learning experience, and with the fundamentals now firmly in place, the future of both the Junior and Senior programmes looks very promising.

U18
The core of this year’s Varsity Rugby squad had earned Junior silver a year ago and came back with serious intent. A strong commitment to winter training earned them a pre-season trip to the renowned Tropical 7s tournament in Orlando, where they competed against top club and state programmes from across the continent. They went 13–0 in the regular season and entered the CISAA Championships as the top seed. The final against perennial contenders Greenwood College was a commanding performance — the Shamrocks controlled every aspect of the match, winning 24–5.

Softball
After a lengthy tryout process and a spring season disrupted by cold, wet weather, the team found their footing when it mattered most. Entering the consolation ‘Fun Four’ tournament after a tight regular season, they went on to defeat Upper Canada College (UCC) with a defensive stand in the final inning to advance to the final against Royal St. George’s College (RSGC). With one out and two on base, Max Dean delivered a clutch hit to bring Angus Hammill home for the walk-off win.

Tennis
The Varsity Tennis team finished third at the CISAA Finals at Mayfair West in a tournament full of tight, competitive matches — several coming down to third-set tiebreaks. The highlight was the first doubles pairing of Zachary Soja and Jaden Mitrovic, who battled through to claim CISAA gold. Grade 7 and 8 students Alex Gidaro and Eric Guo also impressed, earning a third-place finish while competing directly against senior athletes.

Track & Field
U14
The U14 Track and Field team delivered a standout performance at the CISAA Championships at York University, competing against 30+ independent school programmes. The U13 squad claimed the Overall Boys Championship, while the U14 group finished second. Individual stars included Jack Spellman with three gold medals (Javelin, 100-metre, 4×100-metre), and Lochlan Clement taking gold in the 1500-metre. Brandon Emmanuel and Henri Desjardin won the Shot Put in the U13 and U14 divisions, respectively.

Varsity
The Varsity Track and Field team delivered a phenomenal performance at the CISAA Championships, with both the Junior and Senior divisions earning silver medals. Ben Maiese headlined the day by breaking a 15-year-old CISAA record, and then Jacob Ilavsky, Eamon Zietsma, and Maiese swept the entire 3000-metre podium — a remarkable feat. Carson Walsh anchored a dramatic 4×400-metre gold to close out the afternoon.

Ultimate Frisbee
U14
Despite fielding many players new to the sport, the U14 Ultimate team had a breakout season and made history at the CISAA Championships. As the top seed, the first team survived a tense 8–7 semi-final over Branksome-RSGC before defeating UCC–St. Clements 11–3 in the final — claiming the school’s first-ever Ultimate Frisbee Championship.

Varsity
After graduating many key contributors, the Varsity Ultimate programme embraced a younger roster that rose to the challenge with outstanding team spirit throughout the season. The team competed well across three tournaments, including a return to the overnight Kingston Invitational, with athletes showing real growth as they stepped into larger roles.
