Wrapping up the 2024-25 Winter Athletics Season
A contingent of over 260 St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) student-athletes competed in the winter athletics season, which included a slate of 14 teams across six sports, coming away with another season filled with character and team-building and highlighted by several individual and team playoff championships.
“This was a tremendous winter season with many team and individual successes in tournament, league, and provincial events! Kudos to all the student-athletes, coaches, and support staff for their hard work and dedication,” says Alex Frescura ’92, Director of Athletics.

Basketball
Senior
The Blue Raiders reached the semi-finals of the Heinbuch Classic and the All-Ontario Catholic tournament and won the Vic Juvenas tournament and the St. Mike’s tournament. The team was ranked first in the OFSAA tournament but fell short in reaching its championship aspirations and came away with the consolation championship. Phoenyx Wyse was named MVP of the Vic Juvenas and St. Mike’s tournaments and was an all-star of the Chatham Hall of Fame classic, the Heinbuch classic, and the All-Ontario classic. Tobias Sealey was an all-star of the St. Mike’s tournament and both he and Ryan Walsh were named all-stars of the Vic Juvenas tournament.

Junior D1
The Jr. D1 Basketball Raiders had a busy and successful season, highlighted by winning the Silverthorne Invitational, capturing a silver medal in CISAA Jr. D1, and finishing sixth in the regular season of the North Pole Hoops U16 Rep League out of 28 teams. The team also performed well in the North Pole Hoops Jr. D1 Showcase, a prep league featuring some of the best junior prep teams in the province, securing several key victories.

Junior D1B
The Jr. D1B Basketball Raiders had a strong season, earning a silver medal in CISAA Jr. D1B and qualifying for the championship weekend of the U15 North Pole Hoops Rep League. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly a 36-point upset over Hillfield Strathallan College in the CISAA Jr. D1B semi-final game.

U14
The 2024-25 season was defined by determination and growth as the U14 Basketball team faced tough competition. Despite winning only two games, they battled hard in every match and came incredibly close in the semi-finals, falling just four points short against top-ranked Upper Canada College (UCC). Benjamin Biasucci and Jameson Newman led the team in scoring, with Benjamin earning MVP honours as team captain. The season was a testament to perseverance, teamwork, and a commitment to improvement.

Hockey
Senior
The Sr. Hockey team played a mix of league, tournament, and exhibition games throughout the 2024-25 season. Highlights included a perfect 4-0 record at the North American Prep Hockey League Tournament and hosting the U18 Team Hong Kong, China, providing a unique international hockey experience.

Junior Blue
The U16 Blue Hockey Team had another strong season, finishing second in league play and narrowly missing the CISAA championship in a thrilling 6-5 final, giving up the game-winning goal with just 12.5 seconds remaining. With a deep core of Grade 10 players, the squad showcased grit and talent all season long, growing together as a team.

Junior White
This season was one of growth, teamwork, and resilience. From the very first puck drop, the team came together as a unified force, building strong bonds both on and off the ice. Despite facing challenges, the boys consistently displayed determination and never gave up, no matter the odds. The guys were a group of young athletes who not only played hockey but also embodied teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. We couldn’t be prouder of the incredible journey they’ve had together.

U14 Blue
The U14 Blue team’s season was one of promise, perseverance, and teamwork, showcasing ‘true blue’ hockey. With a roster of dedicated skaters, Team Blue came together in crucial moments, wearing the M with pride. Despite a tough loss to Team White in the CISAA D1 quarterfinals, coaches Frattarelli, Lombardi, and Iaboni are proud of the dedication displayed all season.

U14 White
The U14 Hockey White team demonstrated resilience throughout the entire season. Improving together as a unit, they qualified for the CISAA Final Four. After a tough first-round loss and playing shorthanded, Team White bounced back with a thrilling 4-3 overtime win to secure bronze.

Swimming
U14 & Varsity
The 2024-25 SMCS Swim teams made waves this season with outstanding performances, dedication, and school spirit! At OFSAA, Eamon Zietsma reached the Junior 50 Back finals, while the U20 Free Relay team—co-captains Ethan Poon and Ted Wayland, along with Eren Makul and Joseph McCarthy—delivered a strong performance. The Varsity team earned a solid seventh-place finish at the CISAA finals, with standout swims in both individual and relay events across junior, senior, and open categories. The U14 team also excelled at CISAA, with Austin Jung winning two silver medals and the U14 boys securing bronze in the 200 Free Relay.

Curling
D1
This was a rebuilding year for the team, with most players being first-year curlers. Despite this, the team learned quickly and remained competitive throughout the season, finishing with a 2-4 record and reaching the playoffs, where they narrowly missed a win. With the experience gained, this team will be a strong contender next season.

D2
As a development team, each player was a first-year curler. With a rotating lineup ensuring everyone had opportunities to play various positions, all members made significant improvements throughout the season.

Alpine Skiing
U14 & Varsity
It was a banner year for the U14 Alpine Ski team, capping off an outstanding season by securing their second consecutive CISAA Championship at Mansfield Ski Club. Four SMCS racers finished in the top 10: Braydon Lamb took first place overall, followed by James Downey (fifth), David Barrette (sixth), and Grayden Kerr (ninth). Braydon Lamb finishes his U14 alpine career as a back-to-back CISAA gold medalist—congratulations!
The Varsity Alpine Ski team continued its rebuild with strong results. The Level-1 team qualified for OFSAA, placing fifth in Giant Slalom and seventh in Slalom. The Level-2 team finished strong with a third-place finish at CISAA Championships.

Snowboarding
U14 & Varsity
The Blue Yetis Snowboard team had another outstanding season, placing second overall in CISAA but more importantly the Yetis defended their OFSAA Alpine Championship at Devil’s Glen. The riders were spirited throughout the season, moving quickly on the Alpine and SBX tracks and showing off their style in the park. Captained by Grade 12 Jesse Chmiel, the OFSAA Alpine/SBX team comprised of Eilean Lochray, Grade 12, Matteo Muchalov, Grade 11, Hayden Fraser, Grade 11, and Ben Luborsky, Grade 11, were stoked on their performance as the team tries for a three-peat in 2026.
