<p>Joe Younder is a lifelong, award-winning educator who taught at SMCS for 24 years. After growing up in Toronto, he attended SMCS in 1951 and later Assumption College at the University of Windsor. He began his teaching in elementary school and in 1961 was hired at SMCS, where he taught Latin and English. In 1975, he was appointed head of the English Department.</p>
<p>Younder served as an assistant coach with the St. Michael’s Minor Juvenile Hockey Team, which won the City Championship in 1963. In 1966, he became active in the Alumni Association, helping to promote various activities, including organizing the annual Turkey Roll &amp; Reunion.</p>
<p>Younder was president of the Ontario Pro Con Forum Debating Society, a position he held for 35 years while building St. Mike’s into a debating powerhouse in Ontario. He later became active as a director and coach in the Ontario Student Debating Union. In 1996, he was selected as coach and moderator of the Ontario team at the Canadian finals held in Montreal and won gold.</p>
<p>In 1983, Younder was awarded the SMCS Old Boy of the Year Award and was nominated by the Toronto Sun as one of the Top Ten Teachers in Ontario in 1989. In 1992, Niagara University awarded him the Ontario Teacher of the Year for promoting debate and public speaking across the border.</p><p>Younder moved to Brebeuf College School in 1986, becoming Chairman of the English Department. After retirement, and having spent four summers teaching in Ireland, he went on to teach English for two and a half years in Italy.</p>
<p>In retirement, Younder became reengaged with the Alumni Association as an ambassador and served as editor of the Blue Banner alumni magazine from 2005 to 2011.</p>
<p>He lives in Aurora with his wife, Helen, and has four daughters, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.</p></section>

<p>Dominic Montemurro is the president of Medi Group Inc., a leading masonry contractor in Ontario, known for its craftsmanship, reliability, and leadership in the construction industry. Montemurro has built a career grounded in integrity and service. His leadership style reflects the values instilled in him from his time at SMCS—values that continue to guide his professional and personal life.</p>
<p>Montemurro’s commitment to service extends beyond his business. He serves on many boards, including the Masonry Contractors Association and the Masonry Council of Ontario. He is a lifelong benefactor and supporter of SMCS, actively supporting traditions such as the Turkey Roll &amp; Reunion and Homecoming, and his ongoing involvement with the SMCS Alumni Association. Montemurro was a passionate supporter of the SMCS Building Fund and actively supports the Enzo Montemurro Bursary and many construction projects required at the school.</p>
<p>Montemurro credits his foundation to the guidance of the Basilian Fathers—especially Frs. Kennedy, CSB, the late Fitzpatrick, CSB, OSM, Zinger, CSB, OSM, Mohan ’48, CSB, OSM. All these men helped shape Montemurro’s lifelong commitment to goodness, discipline, and knowledge.</p>
<p>Family is central to Montemurro’s life. He and his wife, Susan, have been married for 41 years and are proud parents of Matthew ’04 and Devon. Now a devoted nonno to three grandsons—future SMCS grads—he hopes they will carry forward the Montemurro legacy, which includes his late brother Enzo ’81, along with brothers Ralph ’91 and Marc ’93, and over 15 nephews and cousins who have all attended SMCS. Montemurro’s deep-rooted love for family and community continues to inspire those around him.</p></section>

<p>Dr. Robert J. Birgeneau is an internationally distinguished physicist, a leader in higher education, and is well known for his commitment to diversity and equity in the academic community. He was the ninth chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, where he strengthened its standing as one of the top universities in the world. Under his leadership, Berkeley became the first university in the United States to offer comprehensive financial aid to undocumented students and the first public university to provide significant financial aid to middle-class students.</p>
<p>A Toronto native, Birgeneau received his BSc in mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1963 and his PhD in physics from Yale University in 1966. He served on the faculty of Yale for one year, spent one year at Oxford University, and was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories from 1968 to 1975. He joined the physics faculty at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975, became chair of the Physics Department in 1988, and dean of science in 1991.</p>
<p>In 2000, Birgeneau became the 14th president of the University of Toronto, where he served for four years. He is a fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of London, the American Philosophical Society, and other scholarly societies.</p>
<p>His awards include a special Founders Award from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the 2008 Carnegie Corporation Academic Leadership Award as a ‘Champion of Excellence and Equity in Education,’ and the Shinnyo-en Foundation’s 2009 Pathfinders to Peace Prize for his contributions to bringing about a more peaceful world.</p>
<p>At Berkeley, Birgeneau holds the Arnold and Barbara Silverman Distinguished Chair in the Departments of Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, and Public Policy. He and his wife, Mary Catherine, have four grown children, and nine grandchildren.</p></section>

Dr. Robert J. Birgeneau ’59

<p>Brian Bellmore is a distinguished Toronto lawyer with a long career in corporate and commercial litigation. He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Toronto in 1963 and entered Osgoode Hall Law School in 1964. He graduated in 1967 and was awarded the silver medal, the Chancellor Van Koughnet Scholarship for first place standing, as well as a Harvard Law School scholarship.</p>
<p>At Harvard, Bellmore studied labour and administrative law under Professor Archibald Cox and received a master of laws degree in 1969. While in Boston, he worked at the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute on a case that led to the removal of non-job-related qualifications at the Massachusetts Transportation Authority, which had the effect of discriminating against minority applicants.</p>
<p>He returned to Toronto and joined the Osler Law Firm to practice labour law and civil litigation. In 1974, Bellmore was one of the founding partners of his own Toronto law firm. Throughout his career, he represented individual, government, and corporate clients at every level of the Ontario courts and in the Supreme Court of Canada.</p>
<p>In addition to his law practice, Bellmore served as an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, vice chair of Parkdale Community Legal Services, a member of the Law Society of Ontario Clinic Funding Committee and the Class Proceedings Committee and lectured at the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, and Harvard Law School. He also served as a board member for the National Catholic Broadcasting Council and Southdown Rehabilitation Centre.</p>
<p>From 1991 to 2003, Bellmore was a member of the board of directors of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Limited and the Board of Governors of the National Hockey League.</p>
<p>Bellmore and his wife, Heather, recently celebrated their 58th anniversary. They have four children, Maureen, Patrick ’93, David ’95, Erin, and eight grandchildren.</p></section>
