Science and Technology Mentor Breakfast Builds Connections
For the last six years, the Science and Technology Mentor Breakfast at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) has helped to extend learning beyond the classroom walls for Grade 12 students. On November 14, that tradition continued as over 80 Grade 12 students studying science and/or technology were met with a wealth of experience and expertise from 20 alumni, parents, and professionals. The volunteers, who work in associated careers or whose career paths included a related post-secondary programme, shared their passion for science and technology with students throughout the morning. Keynote speaker Dr. Michael Bazzocchi ’09 spoke about his experience as an associate professor at York University. Students heard about his innovative research at the Astronautics and Robotics Laboratory and how he uses engineering design to do good in the community. He also spoke about all the work that goes into running a lab, applying for grants, and teaching. “The science breakfast gave me many perspectives on what happens during and after post-secondary education,” says Luke Adorante, Grade 12. “It showed me that while I might want to do something specific, I have to be open to any opportunities that come my way.” Other volunteers with careers in product development, consulting, cybersecurity, aerospace, spatial computing, medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy led roundtable discussions with small groups of students. “The opinions and knowledge of the volunteers were very beneficial, specifically information about university life, studying, and work life,” says Harrison Debus, Grade 12. This event was started by the late Science and Technology Department Head, Frank Heijmans, who saw the value of students forming connections and extending their learning outside the classroom. Perfectly positioned during a time when students are applying to university and trying to decide which programme is the best fit for their interests, coupled with an opportunity for students to broaden their understanding of the career
