<h1>Pair of Students Excel in International Essay Competition</h1>
Two St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) students recently made their mark on the international stage, placing in the top five per cent in the John Locke Institute’s Global Essay Competition.
Brian Lee, Grade 11, and Arjun Sivakumar, Grade 12, received the High Commendation award among 100,227 entries across 183 countries.
“When I found out that I had received a High Commendation, the first emotion I felt was relief,” says Lee. “That particular moment meant that my hard work had finally paid off and was proof to me that I was capable of doing great things as long as I put in the appropriate amount of effort. Now, this essay serves as a challenge; it is a standard that I must surpass.”
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smcs-arjun-brian-english-award-1.jpg" alt="SMCS students Brian Lee and Arjun Sivakumar receive international English awards." width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
For the competition, students had to choose a question from one of 10 subject categories and then submit their essays independently, with guidance from an academic referee. Essays were then judged by a panel of academics from universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Princeton.
Vanessa Iaboni, an SMCS English teacher, taught both finalists in her AP English Language and Composition course.
“Brian has had a strong start to AP English Language and Composition this year and is showing strong abilities in critical thinking and argumentation,” Iaboni says of Lee, one of her current students. “The course focuses on non-fiction texts and the art of rhetoric, and he is already showing signs of promise in his ability to inform, influence, and persuade an audience. Even when I taught him in Grade 9, Brian consistently performed well and was engaged in the variety of English texts students are exposed to in our English programme.”
Iaboni also taught Sivakumar in the same course last year. “Arjun was an exceptional student in my AP English Language and Composition course and was consistently one of the strongest writers. He put his best foot forward all year, and despite his already high level, developed as a writer throughout the course. He is a very hard worker, and it comes as no surprise to me that he is being recognized for his talents in writing.”

<h2>Brian Lee – History</h2>
Lee’s essay addressed a question in the history category: ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. Is it? Does it?’
“I was originally going to write about economics, which is what I plan to pursue professionally. However, I chose history because I had never written a decent history paper. I wanted to treat this competition as not only a possibility for an award, but an opportunity to sharpen my skills and become a better writer overall.”
Lee describes the entire process of completing his essay as a rigorous challenge.
“I spent hours choosing what words would fit best and thoroughly analyzed whether my writing had room for improvement,” he says. “I had set my own goal to not write generically, which proved to be difficult as history is usually observed through an analytical lens rather than a creative one.”
Ever since he was little, Lee says he’s enjoyed reading and telling stories. “Naturally, my writing ability quickly improved due to the mass amounts of literature that I would consume, leading me to be increasingly interested in writing itself. At this stage in my life, writing is an opportunity to grow intellectually. It improves my analytical thinking and helps me to form mature and complex ideas that test my acumen.”
Receiving a high commendation following the competition left Lee feeling very happy. “Although I was immensely happy that my hard work paid off, I felt this to be more of a stepping stone instead of the finale of my journey as a writer. I plan to pursue and accomplish greater things as I continue to write, which has led me to feel excited for what is to come rather than contentedly complacent.”
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smcs-english-award-arjun-e1792692174422.jpg" alt="SMCS Student - Arjun Sivakumar" width="330" height="495" class="float-left st-michael-img-330" />
<h2>Arjun Sivakumar – Science and Technology</h2>
Sivakumar’s essay answered a science and technology category prompt: ‘Is free speech the enemy of science?’
“The process for writing this essay was really different from writing essays in school as the competition operates more like an undergraduate thesis defence than a high school report or personal essay,” says Sivakumar, who selected his topic because it intersects philosophy and science—two disciplines that he’s very passionate about. “Because the contest rewards conviction, original argumentation and independent thought (regurgitated or trite arguments are discouraged), spending a lot of time thinking about novel ways to answer the prompt was key. A good chunk of my time was also spent reading existing literature and understanding the landscape of the issue.”
Sivakumar’s interest in writing began when he started high school, alongside his passion for the sciences.
“As I grew older and began grappling with increasingly existential questions, I found myself drawn to the humanities in a search for answers that the sciences could not provide,” he says. “I especially began to immerse myself in history and philosophy; writing became my way to actively engage with the authors I admired and map out, develop, and occasionally reassess my own beliefs.”
He adds that writing has now become a creative outlet for his intellectual and personal expression.
“For me, the process of research and writing is incredibly stimulating, and once I get into the flow of it, writing becomes almost therapeutic (even more so when it is outside of the rigid boundaries of the classroom). As I pursue a career in STEM, I hope to refine my voice so that one day I can use my writing to make a meaningful, impactful contribution to both scientific and humanistic discourse.”
Receiving a high commendation award for his work left Sivakumar with a similar sense of relief. “I was relieved that all the effort that I had put into the essay was not in vain. I don’t feel this is the culmination of my writing journey in high school, but it was definitely a major step on my journey. I hope to continue to improve my writing skills and reach greater heights with my submissions this year.”

<h1>Clubs and Activities Fair Highlights Co-Curricular Opportunities</h1>
Each year, the St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Clubs and Activities Fair takes over the Campeau Lecture Hall and theatre lobby as students explore the myriad of co-curricular opportunities available throughout the new academic year.
“The clubs fair gives every student, especially new and first-year students, one place to see the full range of activities on campus and meet the people who run them,” says Tyler Hill ’05, teacher and co-curricular activities coordinator. “We host it because getting involved is one of the best ways to find community, build skills, and feel at home at school. It also helps clubs recruit new members and gain visibility at the start of the year.”
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smcs-clubs-fair-2026-1.jpg" alt="SMCS Clubs and Activities Fair 2026" width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
This year, more than 300 students explored booths hosted by 51 out of 70+ clubs and activities offered at SMCS.
“Seeing so many students walk in curious and leave with a handful of new communities to explore is what this event is all about,” says Hill. “At its heart, the clubs fair is about helping students build friendships and find new passions.”
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smcs-clubs-fair-2026-2.jpg" alt="SMCS Clubs and Activities Fair 2026" width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
So far, the extensive list of clubs and activities for 2026-27 includes three new offerings and two being relaunched.
AI Ethics Club The AI Ethics Club helps students explore AI in a thoughtful, responsible, and informed way. Members will develop AI literacy, critical thinking, and digital citizenship skills while learning how to use AI creatively, intentionally, and safely. Through interactive workshops, discussions, case studies, and hands-on challenges, students will explore both the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence.
Film Club (returning) Film Club is a space for students who love movies, whether you&#8217;re a casual viewer or an aspiring director. Each week, members watch and discuss films from a range of genres and eras, exploring how storytelling, cinematography, and sound shape what we see on screen.
Primetime Sports Club The Primetime Sports Club is a safe environment for students to engage in challenging debates, explore ‘what if’ scenarios, discuss major events in the sports world, challenge each other&#8217;s perspectives, and participate in a fun day trip to a sports venue.
Trivia Club (formerly Reach for the Top) Trivia Club will now participate in Consensus Trivia and Gradwrite Trivia, which are two companies that provide better options for our students. They make their packs freely available on their websites, and the only cost is the tournament registration fees.
Blue Stars (Jewish Club) Blue Stars is a club for Jewish and non-Jewish students to learn and talk about Jewish culture.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smcs-clubs-fair-2026-4.jpg" alt="SMCS Clubs and Activities Fair 2026" width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
Students who missed the fair or are interested in starting up another club not currently offered are invited to reach out to Mr. Hill for assistance.

<h1>From JK to Grade 8: Teacher and Student Reconnect at SMCS</h1>
When newly enrolled Grade 8 student Joshua Malec was four, Ms. Lee was his junior kindergarten teacher.
“I remember how much growth we shared that year in 2017–18,” says St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) teacher Jennifer Lee. “It was his very first school experience as a four-year-old, and my first and only time teaching junior kindergarten after spending over a decade with intermediate and junior students.”
Lee remembers Malec as a focused and curious student who was quick to smile when he mastered something new.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smcs-jennlee-joshua.jpg" alt="SMCS teacher Jennifer Lee and Joshua Malec." width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
“He was such a bright, sweet presence in the classroom—always focused when it was time to work, but quick to flash a warm smile once he engaged,” she says. “I remember guiding him through the fundamentals, from French phonics to learning how to tie shoes and wrangle snow pants!”
Malec remembers Ms. Lee’s classroom as being organized, with weekly French quizzes and art projects.
“I remember thinking how very welcoming and patient she was,” says Malec. “Based on how she kept her classroom, I would never have known that it was her first time teaching kindergarten. Our entire class made Christmas ornaments that were gingerbread men. I still have my ornament to this day. I think it was made from clay, and it had my name on it. It showed that she really cared about our class.”
Seven years later, Malec and Ms. Lee have crossed paths again at SMCS. Malec is in his first year at SMCS as a Grade 8 student, while Ms. Lee is in her eighth year teaching in the Moderns Department.
The connection was made when Malec’s family started looking at SMCS. At last year’s Open House, Malec realized that his former JK teacher was now working at the school.
“I was very happy and wondered if she would be my teacher again,” Malec says.
His parents were also excited to reconnect with Ms. Lee.
“My parents told me that it would be awesome if she was my first and last teacher,” recalls Malec. “I know my parents really respected her. They looked forward to the art shows she hosted.”
For Lee, finding out that a prospective family was asking about her and that it was Joshua Malec was a surprise.
“It all started last year during Open House,” she says. “The next day, a colleague mentioned that a prospective family had been asking around for me, but I had no idea who it was at the time.”
The reunion then happened when Malec attended a Shadow Day, and when Lee ran into Malec’s parents on the same day and again during his entrance exam.
“Finding out it was Joshua was a complete shock and absolutely surreal—realizing that tiny JK boy from 2017 was now stepping into SMCS right here was amazing!” she says.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smcs-jennlee-joshua-jk-2.jpg" alt="Joshua Malec and Jennifer Lee in Kindergarten" width="1200" height="796" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
For Lee, seeing Malec again also brought back memories of his time in JK.
“One moment that sticks out is watching him during hands-on learning—he would get so intently focused, building elaborate block structures on the play mat with total concentration, and then look up with a proud, bright smile when he finished,” Lee says.
She also remembers watching his French develop throughout the year.
“Seeing him go from learning basic letter sounds to reading and speaking full sentences by the end of June was one of the most rewarding moments of my entire teaching career,” she says.
Malec recognized Lee right away when he saw her again.
“It was very good to see Ms. Lee—she hasn&#8217;t changed a bit,” says Malec. “It is a very nostalgic moment for me. Ms. Lee was a very caring teacher, so it makes me feel right at home.”
Now fully immersed in SMCS, Malec is looking forward to the many co-curricular opportunities available to him, especially sports.
“I am hoping to play hockey, lacrosse, and join the Table Tennis Club here at SMCS,” adds Malec. “However, I am also ready and excited to try new things.”
And while Ms. Lee is not his teacher this year, having a familiar face from his first school experience at SMCS has made the new school feel a little more familiar.
For Lee, the connection has reminded her how much can change in seven years.
“It is deeply rewarding and humbling,” she says. “Having spent most of my career teaching older students, that single year in JK holds a special place in my heart because I learned as much from them as they did from me.”
And there may still be another chapter to the story. While Lee is not currently Malec’s teacher, she could potentially teach him French before he graduates.
“To think I was his very first teacher in kindergarten, and now here we are—maybe I’ll even end up being his last high school French teacher before he graduates!” Lee says.

<h1>National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2026</h1>
Every year on September 30, St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by learning about the histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities and the Canadian government.
This year, the focus of learning was on our school’s land acknowledgement—both in words and as a physical marker of our school’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smcs-truth-reconciliation-2026-1.jpg" alt="SMCS National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | Students gathered on front lawn" width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
Staff and students gathered on the front lawn of the school, by the newly installed Land Acknowledgement Monument and Plaque.
“The outdoor assembly on September 30 involved senior students reading aloud the school&#8217;s land acknowledgement and piece by piece explaining each part of it—what it means and why we are saying it,” says Jacob Lang, SMCS science and biology teacher. “The assembly also included a teaching about the monument that contains the dodems of the signatory chiefs who signed Treaty 13 back in 1805.”
The location of the stone monument and plaque is symbolic, as they’re placed by the school’s original cornerstone on the front lawn facing Bathurst St.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smcs-truth-reconciliation-2026-2.jpg" alt="SMCS National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | Land acknowledgment monument" width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
“Even though the placement of the monument is symbolic, the land acknowledgement is not symbolic or performative,” says Lang, who is of the Métis Nation of Ontario under Barrie South Simcoe Métis Council. “It is and has to be intentional for it to matter. Reconciliation cannot happen unless the nation of Canada and its peoples truly see and recognize Indigenous Nations as sovereign.”
He adds, “It&#8217;s important for our students as well as our entire staff and faculty to know why our land acknowledgement matters. This can&#8217;t be a box to be checked. It is simply the right thing to do. Students need to be outside to see the stone, the acknowledgement, and to get a sense of place while listening and learning about our school&#8217;s land acknowledgement. Visually, the community and public need to see what we are doing and should take notice and perhaps be inspired to begin their own journey of truth and reconciliation that seeks allyship with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples of Turtle Island.”
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smcs-truth-reconciliation-2026-3.jpg" alt="SMCS National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | Senior students describing SMCS land acknowledgment to students" width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
In addition to the assembly, students have deepened their learning through the morning announcements in the week leading up to September 30. The topics ranged from treaties, including Treaty 13, the history of wampum diplomacy, who the Michi Saagiig (Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation) are and why the lands and waters are so important to all Indigenous Peoples, as well as the legacy of the Indian Residential School system and the origin of Orange Shirt Day.
Morning announcements also aimed to answer the question: ‘Why are we all treaty people?’
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://wp-0ca19f9f9dfa467.stmichaelscollegeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smcs-truth-reconciliation-2026-5.jpg" alt="SMCS National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | Fr. Bill May, CSB speaking to students" width="1200" height="800" class="st-michael-img-1200" />
“Too often, people assume that treaties only matter to Indigenous communities. But an agreement always requires two parties. If you live, study, or work in Canada—whether you are Indigenous, a descendant of early settlers, or a newcomer who arrived just months ago—you are a treaty person,” says Lang. “Treaties and Wampums were always intended to last ‘as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the water flows.’ The school&#8217;s land acknowledgement and the monument that contains the dodem signatures of the signatory chiefs of Treaty 13—who were lied to by the government to obtain their lands—are our way to formally begin to uphold our end of that promise.”
