<h1>Top Delegation Award for Model UN Club</h1>
A St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) first was recently realized as the Model UN club distinguished itself at the largest Model United Nations conference in Toronto.

Alongside taking home multiple individual awards, the club captured Best Overall Delegation for the first time at the 19th annual University of Toronto Model United Nations Conference (UTMUN), held January 29 to February 1, 2026.

“This win is a huge milestone in the history of the Model UN club at SMCS,” says Francesco Bellissimo, teacher and one of the Model UN faculty moderators, along with Vanessa Iaboni. “While the club has had the honour of winning delegation awards at other Model UN conferences, these conferences were much smaller in scale. To win an award of this nature, at such a large conference like UTMUN, is truly an accomplishment.”
UTMUN hosts high school delegation teams from all over the world and is the largest conference that SMCS participates in each year.
“I have never felt so proud of St. Mike&#8217;s,” says Lucas Umali, Grade 12, who has been a member of the club since Grade 10. “Knowing that I can be the best on an international stage comforted me immensely, knowing that all my hard work and passion have paid off. But most importantly, and to my surprise, SMCS winning Best Overall Delegation put the biggest smile on my face. I&#8217;m proud to be a part of a monumental accomplishment in our school&#8217;s Model UN history, our first-ever delegation award at a prestigious conference with just six people.”
In addition to the overall award, three SMCS delegates also took home awards in their respective committees: Umali and Austin Theal each won Best Delegate, and Ronan Zhong won Honourable Mention.
“These conferences provide students with unique and exciting educational opportunities as they prepare resolutions to dynamic and real-world situations, participate in debates, and refine their skills in the art of diplomacy and negotiation,” says Bellissimo. “For Ms. Iaboni and me, this is truly a proud moment for both of us. We have been significantly involved with the club for several years and have watched it grow during this time. This award is truly a milestone in the club&#8217;s evolution, so it is a rewarding experience for us and builds excitement for what the future holds!”
In recent years, the SMCS Model UN club has also won top delegation awards at the annual Havergal College Model UN Conference in 2021 and 2025.
“Receiving Best Overall Delegation at this most recent conference was especially meaningful to me,” says Zhong, Grade 12, who also joined the club in Grade 10. “I won my first-ever individual award at UTMUN in 2024, and now our club has won Best Overall Delegation in my senior year, making my Model UN journey feel truly full circle. It was incredibly rewarding to see our collective hard work pay off. As a Grade 12, this award also reassures me that the legacy of Model UN at SMCS is in good hands, especially with so many new members contributing to the delegation.”
The Model UN club at SMCS is always accepting new members interested in debate, politics, and international affairs, or in improving their public speaking and presentation skills.
“Model UN is a place to meet people,” says Theal, Grade 12. “I didn&#8217;t join Model UN in Grade 9 because I was particularly interested in global politics, or because I had a deep fascination with interesting roleplay or proper procedure, I joined Model UN because I&#8217;m an extrovert who enjoys debate. As much as Model UN is a club that enforces academic rigour and competitive diplomacy, it is also a way to foster communication skills and have personally meaningful dialogue with like-minded people.”

<h1>SMCS Student-Athlete Prepares to Head South</h1>
St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Grade 12 student Luke Olynick has committed to continue his academic and athletic journey at the University of Hartford this fall, where he will join the men’s golf programme and pursue a degree in business management at The Barney School of Business.
“The University of Hartford was a fit for me both academically and athletically,” says Olynick. “The golf team has had an incredible year competing in the NCAA, and I felt the school itself offered a strong business programme where I could further my education. I had lunch with the guys on the team, and they were all amazing to me and made me feel very welcome. I also really enjoyed learning about the school itself and what it has to offer!”

Olynick picked up the sport of golf at age seven and started playing competitively at 11 while honing his skills at his home course, St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto. In 2024, he was named SMCS Junior Golf MVP and St. George’s Junior Golfer of the Year.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Hartford Hawks golf programme, and I already know it’s a great place to grow as a player and a person,” adds Olynick. “They had some great success last year, including winning the Conference of New England Championship and finishing first in the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship. I also like that the schedule includes playing a variety of courses in different states, which will be a great experience to travel and continue to do what I love—play competitive golf.”
During his four years on the SMCS golf team, Olynick has experienced tremendous growth, both on and off the course.

“Luke has been a steady presence on the Blue Eagles Golf Team and has been an integral part of three consecutive CISAA championships and an OFSAA title in 2024,” says Nunzio Corrente, teacher and golf team coach alongside Paul Ruta and Mike Ross ’85. “With a remarkable skill set and a competitive spirit, Luke&#8217;s game is built to take on the challenges of collegiate golf, and we can’t wait to see how he shines on the course. The coaching staff is excited and proud of Luke and looks forward to seeing him play at the collegiate level.”
In addition, his academic progress has blossomed alongside his golf career, earning honour roll status in Grade 11 and well on his way to repeating it in his graduating year.
“SMCS prepared me really well to succeed as a student-athlete by teaching me how to balance academics and athletics at a high level,” says Olynick. “The school emphasizes strong time-management skills, which helped me stay organized while juggling classes, practices, and competitions. Teachers were supportive and held me to high standards, which pushed me to work hard and stay accountable.”

On the course, Olynick represented SMCS golf teams that captured CISAA championships in 2023, 2024, and 2025, as well as an OFSAA gold in 2024.
“I have really enjoyed playing for the SMCS Blue Eagles, where I’ve improved my competitive golf skills and gained more confidence on the course. The coaches have given us so many amazing opportunities to compete. They always push us to do our best while still making the experience fun. I am very grateful for all the time, support, and guidance the coaches have given me. Because of them, I have grown not only as a golfer but also as a person.”

<h1>Inspired to Serve: Student Initiative Makes a Difference</h1>
A trio of senior students are demonstrating what it means to Be the Good, by serving and leading in their community following a successful initiative that inspired them to give more.
Luca Tatone, Lucas Connop, and Christian Pavlovic, Grade 12 students at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), recently launched a shoebox drive to create a meaningful way of giving back to children and families at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

“I volunteered at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital during March Break as a FIRST Robotics camp volunteer,” says Tatone. “I wanted to find a different and more hands-on way to give back, and the experience allowed me to support children while contributing to an environment focused on learning, growth, and inclusion. The experience was very eye-opening and humbling, as it showed me the daily challenges many children and families face. It helped me gain a deeper appreciation for resilience and the importance of compassion.”
Connop, who has also been a volunteer for the past two summers, adds, “Volunteering at Holland Bloorview left a significant mark on my character. My experience taught me that, regardless of what they have been through, everyone has the strength within them to persevere. Seeing the progress and growth in the patients truly inspired me to attack my own challenges with the same attitude.”
Their goals for the shoebox drive were to raise awareness within our school community about Holland Bloorview and give back to the children and families in a tangible way.
“We wanted to move beyond fundraising alone and instead offer something personal and thoughtful that could directly bring comfort and joy to the children,” says Pavlovic.
Each shoebox contained an assortment of five items, such as small toys, art supplies, and comfort items designed to be inclusive for children with varying needs and abilities. Students participating in the fundraiser were also eligible to acquire a small number of Christian service hours for each box donated.

“Holland Bloorview and similar organizations are in constant need of generous support,” says Connop. “They always need willing volunteers and resources for patient care and therapeutics to give these children the best experience possible. That is why we are calling all students to devote their time and donate so we can help be a part of that process.”
The trio of students raised awareness of the fundraiser through videos on the morning announcements and classroom visits where they answered questions from peers while also speaking about their experiences with Holland Bloorview and the importance of supporting organizations like it.
“Volunteering with organizations like Holland Bloorview helps students develop empathy, perspective, and social responsibility,” says Pavlovic. “It allows students to understand the real-life challenges faced by children and families with disabilities and complex medical needs. These experiences encourage students to move beyond mandatory hours.”
At SMCS, high school students go beyond the provincial requirement of completing 40 community service hours and complete an additional 20 Christian service hours in Grades 11 and 12, doing work that focuses on serving marginalized communities.

“Christian Service hours in Grade 11 and 12 are important ways for students to gain unique volunteer experiences that are meant to be impactful and evoke a spiritual connection,” says Christina Shin, Department Head of Applied Science and Technology. “Seeing how the Christian Service hours experience played a role in the creation and execution of this project is an example of the St. Michael&#8217;s College School ‘Portrait of a Graduate’ initiative at work. I am so impressed by the drive and effort of these young men.”
In total, the group of students collected and donated around 50 shoeboxes to the cause.
“After volunteering, we saw firsthand the struggles many families face just to access care at Holland Bloorview,” says Tatone. “We wanted to create a meaningful way to support both the children and their families beyond our volunteer hours.”
Connop adds, “My volunteer experience has inexplicably shaped who I am today. It is why I am continuing my journey with Holland Bloorview beyond our school&#8217;s service requirements by co-founding this shoebox drive while actively encouraging student engagement with Holland Bloorview.”

<h1>Career Day 2026: Opening Doors to Possibilities</h1>
Grade 11 students spent a full day looking beyond the classroom and into the real world as St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) hosted its annual Career Day on January 27. The event helps students explore postsecondary pathways, discover different professions, and begin thinking seriously about the skills needed beyond high school.

“At this stage in their high school journey, students are beginning to make important academic and personal decisions,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, community engagement and learning lead. “Career Day provides a break in the daily routine to explore what is possible and gain meaningful exposure to real-world experiences and professional insight.”
The day opened with engaging keynote speaker Rob Nickerson, well-known for his energetic and interactive leadership workshops using improvisation as a teaching tool.
Using improv-based techniques and hands-on exercises, students were challenged to step outside their comfort zones while developing skills in leadership, collaboration, creative problem-solving, and effective communication. The session set an energetic and reflective tone for the day, emphasizing adaptability, teamwork, and confidence—skills essential across all career paths.

During the second half of the day, students rotated through a series of interactive sessions led by guest speakers representing fields, including business, science, technology, health care, law, education, entrepreneurship, athletics, and the creative industries.
“I found Career Day to be a very valuable and engaging experience. It gave me the opportunity to learn in-depth about a wide range of careers and the different educational paths, skills, and personal qualities required to succeed in each field,” says Reed Hammill, Grade 11. “Hearing directly from professionals allowed me to better understand what their day-to-day work looks like, as well as the challenges and rewards associated with their careers. Learning from others&#8217; experiences helped me reflect more seriously on my own interests and goals, and it clarified what I might want to pursue in the future. I especially appreciated that each speaker represented a different career, as this exposed me to multiple perspectives across various job markets and highlighted the many unique pathways to professional success.”

Speakers shared their personal journeys, discussed the realities of their professions, and offered honest insights into university and college pathways, apprenticeships, and alternative routes to success.
“Career Day was a very helpful and interesting experience that broadened my view of how many possibilities there are for me after graduation,” says Wallace Dempsey, Grade 11. “I had the opportunity to speak to professionals in many different areas, such as physical training, broadcasting, computer science, and coaching at a pro level. Hearing all these professionals speak about what they do and how they got to their current roles was eye-opening for me, as I am still unsure what I want to pursue in my post-secondary education.”

Throughout these sessions, an emphasis was placed on transferable skills such as perseverance, communication, and critical thinking. Each speaker brought a unique story and perspective, sharing how their own paths unfolded and the lessons they learned along the way.
“The day also encouraged students to ask thoughtful questions and reflect on their own interests, strengths, and values,” added Lumsden. “Our small-group sessions helped students gain confidence in introducing themselves and articulating their goals. For many, it was a first taste of the kind of conversations they will have in interviews and postsecondary settings.”
Importantly, the day reinforced that there is no single ‘right’ path to success following high school. Careers are rarely straight lines, shaped by curiosity, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

<h1>Alumni Information Series Guides Us Into The Age of AI</h1>
Recognizing the growing influence of artificial intelligence and the questions it raises, the St. Michael’s College School Alumni Association (SMCSAA) recently hosted a virtual session in the Alumni Information Series on January 22 that focused on the technology’s evolution and real-world impact.
The discussion brought together alumni and members of the St. Michael’s community to explore how artificial intelligence has developed, from early rules-based systems of the 1950s to today’s powerful generative AI and what that evolution means for work, education, politics, and everyday life. The session emphasized that while AI is transforming how tasks are performed, it is best understood as a tool that enhances human capabilities rather than replacing human judgment.

The conversation was led by Sam Passafiume ’01, vice president of operational data, information, and AI at RBC. Drawing on his professional experience, Passafiume outlined how the technology is already reshaping workplaces by improving efficiency, automating routine tasks, and supporting complex analysis, while also highlighting its limitations in areas such as ethics, decision-making, and accountability.  Moderator and SMCS Alumni Association director Chris Smith ’06 guided the discussion, helping connect technical concepts to practical, real-world implications.
“Sam gave us a great overview of AI and highlighted the importance of being a student of AI and learning how to use it to your advantage, so you’re not left behind by those who are using it,” says Smith.
Throughout the session, Passafiume stressed the importance of critical thinking and ethical decision-making. He encouraged attendees to focus on developing skills such as asking good questions, understanding context, and recognizing the limitations and risks of AI systems. Examples from industries including capital markets, education, and the arts illustrated both the opportunities and challenges presented by rapid technological change.

“While AI can accelerate progress and amplify human effort, the direction it takes and the values that guide it remain firmly in human hands,” says Passafiume.
The discussion also explored emerging topics, including AI agents, security risks, and the need for strong human safeguards, particularly in sensitive areas such as financial systems and critical infrastructure. Attendees gained insight into how organizations use AI to manage risk, detect anomalies, and analyze large volumes of data, while maintaining accountability through robust guardrails.
“We were so grateful to have Sam join us for such a timely and interactive session,” says Yulian Kidane ’19, SMCS Alumni Association events coordinator. “The webinar changed everyone&#8217;s fundamental understanding of what the building blocks of AI are, how you can integrate your abilities to match a more AI-led working environment, and an executive perspective on where AI is heading.”

<h1>SMCS Football Standout Commits to Queen’s University</h1>
St. Michael’s College School’s (SMCS) Carter Wells, Grade 12, has committed to attend Queen’s University and play for the top-ranked Golden Gaels this fall.
“I chose Queen’s because I believe it is the best blend of high-level academics along with an exceptional football programme,” says Wells, who will enter Queen’s Faculty of Engineering. “After spending time touring various universities and their football programmes, Queen’s clearly distinguished itself as my top choice. The engineering programme at Queen’s is well-renowned, as is their very successful football programme.”

From trying his hand at flag football in Grade 8, with no previous experience, to being recruited to play university football for one of the country’s top-ranked programmes, Wells’ development path has been nothing short of impressive.

“Carter Wells exemplifies what it means to be a true student‑athlete,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, Sr. Kerry Blues coach and community engagement and learning lead. “His dedication in the classroom matches his drive on the football field, and his achievements in both areas reflect a level of discipline and excellence that inspires everyone around him.”
Wells joined the SMCS Kerry Blues football team in Grade 9, where he developed as both a running back and a defensive end. At Queen’s, he will suit up for the Golden Gaels as a linebacker.
“I like that the Queen’s football team is a close community with exceptional coaching,” adds Wells. “The players on the team praise a brotherhood environment, which is very appealing to me as I believe it will help me adapt to the student-athlete lifestyle. I had the opportunity to visit the campus, tour the facilities, and meet the coaches who were very welcoming—it felt like the right environment for me to succeed.”
His time with SMCS football has been defined not only by competition but also by the relationships and experiences that came with it. From forming lasting friendships to competing across Southern Ontario and in the United States, his Kerry Blues years have left a strong impression.

“My experience playing football at St. Mike’s has been very positive. I’ve met new people and made new friendships, which have developed over the years to become some of my closest relationships,” says Wells, who capped off his football career at SMCS by being named a TCDSB all-star following the 2025 season. “Our coaches fostered an environment where nobody is bigger than the programme, no matter skill level. We were taught to stay disciplined, and that team success is built on trust.”
In the classroom, Wells has emerged as a role model student-athlete, achieving academic success with a similar disciplined, hard-working approach to his course load. He has earned honour roll status every year at SMCS, received the Basilian Book Award (over 90 per cent average) in Grade 9, and finished among the top 10 academically in his Grade 11 class.
“SMCS taught me discipline, time management, and how to prioritize,” says Wells. “The academic workload and the expectations of the football programme really helped to prepare you for what’s next.
