The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Blue Yetis snowboard team carved their names into the SMCS history books recently as the first-ever team to capture three consecutive OFSAA snowboarding championships.
“It was a mix of emotions—shock, gratefulness, and humility that they were able to pull through with another outstanding season,” says Adrian Spagnolo ’02, teacher and one of the SMCS Snowboard team coaches. “To do it three years in a row is a credit to the grit and determination of our student-athletes. This one feels a little sweeter.”
The snowboard team qualified for OFSAA following an impressive CISAA championship day at Devil’s Glen Country Club. Notable CISAA season mentions go out to our U14 duo of Sebastian Leopold (gold/silver) and Colin Katchin (gold/silver) in the giant slalom (GS) and slopestyle divisions. Junior captain Nick Jensen dominated the field of competition, taking home gold in both divisions. Hayden Fraser captured double silvers in his divisions, while Matteo Muchalov finished fourth in GS and fifth in slopestyle. Chris Gula placed second in the division, behind SMCS teammate Ben Luborsky, who earned gold in just his second year competing in slopestyle with SMCS.
In total, five SMCS snowboarders qualified for OFSAA championships, also held at Devil’s Glen in Duntroon: Hayden Fraser, Matteo Muchalov, Ben Luborsky, Chris Gula, and Nick Jensen.
Following the morning run at OFSAA, the team&#8217;s combined time put them in second place, 2.75 seconds behind Malvern Collegiate. In the afternoon, SMCS tackled the course and made up the time, launching them into first place in school and OFSAA history.
“It was a day full of highs and lows, but the boys’ resilience shone through in the end,” says Spagnolo. “Our group is made up of unique personalities who have embraced coming together as a team, welcomed adversity, and featured great student leadership. At the end of the day, they simply love hanging out, goofing around, and winning as a team.” 
Muchalov (15th), Fraser (17th), and Jensen (20th) made up SMCS’ top three performers out of 131 snowboarders.

“They are a humble group and their success just makes them hungrier for more,” says Spagnolo. “One championship is hard enough, two were a grind, but three has now established a legacy. Hoping we can get more students snowboarding and competing in the future.”

<h1>A Call to Action: Dr. Mandela Visits SMCS</h1>
As part of its commitment to extended learning opportunities outside the classroom, St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) recently welcomed Dr. Siyabulela Mandela, the great-grandson of Nelson Mandela, for a day of reflection, dialogue, and meaningful exchange.
Dr. Mandela is a peace and human rights activist and a lecturer for politics and international relations at the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr in Iraq. His visit to SMCS on February 23, 2026, included two student sessions and one evening parent and alumni session.

“Dr. Mandela provided an amazing opportunity for students to be challenged with the idea that they have a unique responsibility, because of the privileges they have been afforded, to address social inequities and to pursue justice,” says Emile John ’87, vice principal.
The first morning session with Grades 7-9 students centred on identity and character. Dr. Mandela encouraged students to consider the power of their own stories and reminded them that leadership begins long before a title is ever given. Through thoughtful examples and approachable language, he emphasized empathy, personal responsibility, and the courage required to stand up for what is right. The message for SMCS students was clear: small daily choices shape the kind of person one becomes.
“Dr. Mandela’s speech was nothing short of powerful,” says Maksym Hetmanczuk, Grade 8. “The way he interacted with us really inspired me, and he opened up my eyes about how a country with such a dark past can still have hope for a bright future.”

Dr. Mandela’s second session invited Grades 10-12 students into a more complex conversation, challenging them to examine systems of justice, questioning assumptions, and reflecting on their role in shaping communities marked by fairness and dignity. The discussion moved fluidly between history and present-day realities, prompting students to consider how leadership is exercised not only on a global stage but also within their own homes, classrooms, and communities.
“Dr. Mandela&#8217;s vision and values on leadership, truth and reconciliation was truly inspirational,&#8221; says Raheem Harrison, Grade 12. “He mentioned that in order to be an effective leader, it takes strong courage and empathy—his message resonated with me deeply.”
The evening’s presentation drew a strong turnout, reflecting the deep interest within the broader school community. Parents and guests engaged closely with Dr. Mandela’s reflections, particularly his explanation of Truth and Reconciliation. He spoke of reconciliation not as a passive act of moving on, but as a deliberate process—one that requires honesty about the past, acknowledgement of harm, and a sustained commitment to change.

Throughout the day, what resonated most was the clarity and sincerity of Dr. Mandela’s voice. While connected to a remarkable legacy, he spoke not from inheritance alone, but from study, experience, and conviction. His message called on the community to move beyond admiration toward thoughtful action.
“Dr. Mandela’s visit was more than a series of presentations,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, community engagement and learning lead. “It was an opportunity for formation—a reminder that the pursuit of justice, understanding, and reconciliation is ongoing, and that each generation carries a responsibility to continue the work.”

<h1>St. Michael’s College School appoints new Principal</h1>
St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) and the Basilian Fathers are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Philip Wilson as the school’s 32nd principal in its distinguished 173-year history.

Wilson currently serves as Superintendent of Education with the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board (BHNCDSB), where he provides system-level leadership in student achievement, faith formation, co-curricular programming and complex operational matters.
“On behalf of St. Michael’s College School and the Basilian Fathers, we are delighted to welcome Mr. Wilson to our community,” says Fr. Andrew Leung, CSB, President. “He brings a strong faith-centred leadership approach and a demonstrated commitment to academic excellence, equity, and the holistic formation of students. We look forward to his leadership as we continue our mission of excellence in Catholic boys’ education.”
With more than 25 years of experience in education, Wilson has served as a teacher, vice principal, principal, and superintendent. As a school principal, he led diverse learning communities where academic growth and co-curricular excellence were deeply integrated. He created innovative programmes to support student-athletes excel academically and athletically, with a focus on character development. His work in equity, special education, and student achievement reinforces excellence and inclusion as complementary commitments rooted in the Catholic call to honour the dignity of every person.
He has also supported school leaders and staff across elementary and secondary schools in instructional leadership and student success.
Rooted in Catholic faith and inspired by the Basilian tradition, Wilson’s leadership emphasizes presence, service, and accompaniment. Early in his vocation, Wilson had the opportunity to work alongside the Basilian Fathers, influencing his enduring commitment to the formation of young men through faith, discipline, and community.
“I am deeply honoured and humbled to serve as Principal of St. Michael’s College School,” says Wilson. “St. Michael’s has a proud Basilian tradition of forming young men in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. I look forward to partnering with the Basilian Fathers, faculty, staff, students, families, and alumni as we build upon this strong foundation and continue to challenge our students to Be the Good.”
SMCS looks forward to a collaborative and seamless transition with current Principal Pat Daly in the months ahead and to welcoming Wilson in his new role in August 2026.

<h1>Kerry Blues Veteran Commits to Laurier</h1>
Grade 12 student-athlete, Hugo Thomas, has committed to spending the next chapter of educational journey in Waterloo, representing the purple and gold of Wilfrid Laurier University.
The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) wide receiver will join the Golden Hawks this fall while pursuing a business degree.

“I chose Wilfrid Laurier University because of the winning culture, the coaching staff, and the amazing academics,” says Thomas. “From the beginning, it felt like a place where success is expected—not just on the field but in the classroom too. The coaches made me feel valued and showed real belief in my development as both a player and a person. I wanted to be part of a programme that pushes you to be your best every day.”
Thomas will enter Laurier’s honours BA programme with a focus on business management, allowing him the flexibility to explore different areas of study while building a strong foundation in business and leadership.

“Laurier’s strong reputation in business and management stood out for me, as well as the strong support system available to student-athletes,” says Thomas. “I like that the programme emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and real-world application—all things that connect directly to athletics. The balance between academics and athletics is something Laurier does well, and that was important to me.”
His passion for football was ignited in Grade 6, playing flag football, before transitioning to tackle football in Grade 9 at SMCS.
“I grew up playing football on my elementary school team and spending hours throwing the ball around with friends,” adds Thomas. “I lived in Revelstoke, B.C., and Collingwood, Ontario, and in both places, football was something I loved doing any chance I got.”
During Thomas’ teenage years, he thrived as a multi-sport athlete, splitting his time between basketball, hockey, track and field, in addition to his commitment to football.
“Growing up, I was always active in sports, and I truly believe it helped me build a strong athletic foundation and my competitive spirit,” he says.
In 2024, Thomas received the SMCS JV Most Outstanding Player and Character Award. The next season, he was named an Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) All-Star (2025) and was also selected as a Toronto All-Star that year. In 2026, Thomas earned an All-Ontario Honourable Mention.
“Hugo represents everything you hope for in a captain—his character is defined not just by how he plays the game, but by how he carries himself every single day,” says Dr. Daniel Lumsden ’96, Sr. Kerry Blues coach and community engagement and learning lead. “Around football, he leads with toughness and accountability, holding himself to a high standard and bringing others with him. He understands that leadership is not about being the loudest voice; it is about consistency and doing the right thing when no one is watching. His commitment to Laurier speaks volumes about who he is. They (Laurier) are not just getting a football player; they are getting a leader of character.”
At SMCS, Thomas was a four-year member of the Kerry Blues football programme, where he experienced first-hand the discipline and accountability required to compete at a high level.
“My experience playing football at St. Mike’s was honestly a 10 out of 10,” says Thomas. “The expectations were high, and nothing was handed to you. You had to earn everything. There were tough practices, hard losses, and long days, but seeing the growth from Grade 9 to Grade 12 and building those bonds with my teammates made it an unforgettable experience.”

Thomas credits SMCS not only for his football development but also for the foundation it provided him with in the classroom, preparing him for the next level.
“St. Michael’s taught me discipline, time management, and accountability,” he says. “Balancing academics and athletics forced me to stay organized and consistent. I spent a lot of time training, recovering, and improving, and I thank all my coaches and trainers for their support and guidance. The culture at SMCS emphasizes hard work and character, and that mindset is something I will carry with me to Laurier.”

<h1>Top Delegation Award for Model UN Club</h1>
A St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) first was recently realized as the Model UN club distinguished itself at the largest Model United Nations conference in Toronto.

Alongside taking home multiple individual awards, the club captured Best Overall Delegation for the first time at the 19th annual University of Toronto Model United Nations Conference (UTMUN), held January 29 to February 1, 2026.

“This win is a huge milestone in the history of the Model UN club at SMCS,” says Francesco Bellissimo, teacher and one of the Model UN faculty moderators, along with Vanessa Iaboni. “While the club has had the honour of winning delegation awards at other Model UN conferences, these conferences were much smaller in scale. To win an award of this nature, at such a large conference like UTMUN, is truly an accomplishment.”
UTMUN hosts high school delegation teams from all over the world and is the largest conference that SMCS participates in each year.
“I have never felt so proud of St. Mike&#8217;s,” says Lucas Umali, Grade 12, who has been a member of the club since Grade 10. “Knowing that I can be the best on an international stage comforted me immensely, knowing that all my hard work and passion have paid off. But most importantly, and to my surprise, SMCS winning Best Overall Delegation put the biggest smile on my face. I&#8217;m proud to be a part of a monumental accomplishment in our school&#8217;s Model UN history, our first-ever delegation award at a prestigious conference with just six people.”
In addition to the overall award, three SMCS delegates also took home awards in their respective committees: Umali and Austin Theal each won Best Delegate, and Ronan Zhong won Honourable Mention.
“These conferences provide students with unique and exciting educational opportunities as they prepare resolutions to dynamic and real-world situations, participate in debates, and refine their skills in the art of diplomacy and negotiation,” says Bellissimo. “For Ms. Iaboni and me, this is truly a proud moment for both of us. We have been significantly involved with the club for several years and have watched it grow during this time. This award is truly a milestone in the club&#8217;s evolution, so it is a rewarding experience for us and builds excitement for what the future holds!”
In recent years, the SMCS Model UN club has also won top delegation awards at the annual Havergal College Model UN Conference in 2021 and 2025.
“Receiving Best Overall Delegation at this most recent conference was especially meaningful to me,” says Zhong, Grade 12, who also joined the club in Grade 10. “I won my first-ever individual award at UTMUN in 2024, and now our club has won Best Overall Delegation in my senior year, making my Model UN journey feel truly full circle. It was incredibly rewarding to see our collective hard work pay off. As a Grade 12, this award also reassures me that the legacy of Model UN at SMCS is in good hands, especially with so many new members contributing to the delegation.”
The Model UN club at SMCS is always accepting new members interested in debate, politics, and international affairs, or in improving their public speaking and presentation skills.
“Model UN is a place to meet people,” says Theal, Grade 12. “I didn&#8217;t join Model UN in Grade 9 because I was particularly interested in global politics, or because I had a deep fascination with interesting roleplay or proper procedure, I joined Model UN because I&#8217;m an extrovert who enjoys debate. As much as Model UN is a club that enforces academic rigour and competitive diplomacy, it is also a way to foster communication skills and have personally meaningful dialogue with like-minded people.”
