<h1>Striking a Chord through Service and the Sound of Music</h1>
<p>When a service initiative strikes a deep personal chord, the impact can be unexpected, even profound.</p>

<p>Such has been the case for Jonathan.</p>

<p>&quot;I have thought about social isolation during quarantine because I was experiencing it,&quot; says the Grade 10 student at St. Michael&#39;s College School (SMCS).</p>

<p>Little did Jonathan know that a brand-new volunteer opportunity at SMCS introduced this year, would further expand his understanding of what can happen when human contact is limited or non-existent.</p>

<p>&quot;I think that it is horrifying that some seniors are going through that every day for years,&quot; he says.</p>

<p>Jonathan is among several students bridging multiple divides &#8212; age, technology, musical tastes, and language &#8212; while directly addressing what is described as a societal &quot;epidemic&quot;.</p>

<p>&quot;COVID [has been] just brutal on long-term care communities &#8212; there&#39;s no nice way to put it,&quot; says Julian Powell, a social entrepreneur. &quot;Residents had to spend really prolonged periods of time alone because of infection control measures right down to having to eat meals in their rooms, and not even getting to interact with other residents in their community. And these sorts of things can be really detrimental, especially for seniors living with some form of dementia, because they&#39;re already just sort of holding on. And the minute these programmes or these activities are taken away from them, you see people start to decline really quickly. And there are really serious moral implications there.&quot;</p>

Since 2017, Powell and his team, along with a network of youth volunteers, have been working to address loneliness among seniors in long-term care facilities through Music Share, a not-for-profit organization he founded.</p>

<p>According to its website, Music Share is &quot;dedicated to reducing senior social isolation through a variety of individualized music-based programming.&quot;&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;St. Mike&#39;s was the very first school that we worked with,&quot; says Powell. Since the fall, the programme has added more schools to its volunteer network.</p>

<p>&quot;I immediately jumped on the opportunity to support seniors as they were especially vulnerable at the onset of COVID,&quot; recalls Dr. Robert Fantilli &rsquo;94, math teacher at SMCS, who was introduced to Music Share by a SMCS parent in March 2021. &quot;This avenue allowed our students to bring the joy of music to residents in our community and abroad.&quot;</p>

<p>Fantilli also oversees Christian service initiatives at SMCS.</p>

<p>&quot;Students were presented the Music Share opportunity via our Edsby Community Service portal and signed up on a first come first served basis,&quot; says Fantilli. &quot;Within the first 24 hours, we had more volunteers than the opportunity required, and [it] has been well supported and continues to be to this day.&quot;</p>

There are two main ways volunteers can be involved with Music Share, across four program types. With pandemic restrictions, SMCS students participate virtually as &#39;remote playlisters&#39;.</p>

<p>&quot;My role was to make a music playlist around 45 minutes long based on the senior&rsquo;s request,&quot; says Jonathan, who has made 20 separate, customized playlists for 20 individuals since he began volunteering in September.</p>

<p>Volunteers are provided with a list of songs that are chosen by the senior themselves. Each song is then uploaded to individual playlists on Spotify. The playlists are then shared with each senior by staff in their residence.</p>

<p>&quot;When making these music playlists, I would often think about how different it would be if there was no social isolation,&quot; says Jack Major, a Grade 10 student volunteer, whose mother introduced the service opportunity to the school.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;My view on social isolation was greatly impacted after realizing that I wouldn&rsquo;t be able to show the residents their music in-person,&quot; he says, adding, &quot;I think [it] is a great and fun way to connect and help others.&quot;</p>

<p>In non-COVID times, volunteers can opt to share the playlist directly with the senior, in person.</p>

<p>&quot;During the most severe parts of the pandemic, we weren&#39;t even allowed to go into long-term care homes to deliver our programme,&quot; says Powell. &quot;We were really doing what we could in the meantime, creating some distance programming. We had iPad drop-off programmes, where we would fill three iPads with all of the music necessary for the residents in the home, and then actually deliver those iPads to a long-term care community once a week, so that the staff could bring music around to their residents. We also developed a one-to-one model over Zoom, where staff can bring an iPad and speaker directly to a residents&#39; room, and then we have facilitators on the other end of that Zoom call, who control the music for this individual.&quot;&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;We wanted to design a system whereby anyone could participate, and there would be something meaningful and personal in each interaction,&quot; adds Powell, who was driven to launch Music Share after his own previous volunteer experience.</p>

<p>&quot;I was inspired by my time spent volunteering with Meals on Wheels,&quot; he recounts. &quot;Through that service, I noticed that there were a number of individuals in our community, who, while their physical needs were being met, there were social and spiritual needs that were not being met. And that&#39;s because a lot of the people that use this service spend a lot of time in home or on their own. Through cursory research, you can determine pretty quickly that seniors living in long-term care are some of the most isolated people in our community. There are self-report measures that demonstrate a high number of seniors living in long-term care report feelings of isolation and loneliness, and this can lead to depression and other sorts of co-morbidities.&quot;</p>

<p>With the backing of the Social Venture Zone at his alma mater, Ryerson University, Powell pushed play on the idea &#8212; which has only grown with the onset of COVID.</p>

<p>&quot;The real impact of Music Share is the connections that are created,&quot; continues Powell. &ldquo;We&#39;re not just about providing music, we&#39;re about providing social interaction and meaningful relationship-building. We&#39;re connecting residents back to their favorite music and songs that they might have not heard in a long time. A big component of our programme is providing music in languages other than English to individuals who didn&#39;t necessarily grow up in Canada. We&#39;re also connecting them back to cherished memories of places and people just by the nostalgia that is triggered every time they hear the music. On top of that, we&#39;re also connecting them to a brand new relationship, and someone outside of their daily routine, a friendly face that they get to build a friendship with over time.&quot;</p>

<p>Youth volunteers range in age from 13 to 18 years old.</p>

<p>&quot;All the [SMCS] students who have taken part have done excellent work,&quot; adds Powell. &quot;They&#39;ve created the playlist exactly as we were hoping they would. There&#39;s even one student that I found out recently graduated, and has still been volunteering with us, even though he&#39;s already met all of his school requirements.&quot;</p>

<p>That student is Jack Jarrett &#39;21.</p>

<p>&quot;During this experience, I&rsquo;ve gotten a better understanding of how much of an impact music therapy can have on individuals in the essence of how it affects the brain and triggers memories from people&rsquo;s pasts,&quot; says Jarrett, who began volunteering with Music Share in April 2021, two months before graduating from SMCS.</p>

<p>&quot;A popular favourite is Elvis who seems to be included in many of the playlists I make, as well as other honorable mentions, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Mohammed Rafi,&quot; he says.</p>

<p>Jarrett continues to receive monthly request lists from Music Share that he creates into playlists. He has also added other activities to his personal volunteer list. &quot;I believe it&rsquo;s important to help out and get involved no matter what stage you&rsquo;re at in life.&quot;</p>

<p>As the requests keep streaming in for both Music Share and its volunteers, the impact of the programme keeps hitting plenty of high notes.</p>

<p>&quot;Being able to get students involved and get them understanding the idea of social isolation, as youth, and especially getting them familiar with seniors and long-term care and how this system works, I think it really helps to create more compassionate and more fully-rounded youth,&quot; says Powell. &quot;They can take these lessons with them as they age, so that we&#39;re creating a more conscientious society overall.&quot;</p>

<p><strong>During the month of December, Music Share is accepting donations of new or used iPads to help fulfill and expand its service to seniors.</strong></p>

<h1>Behind the Green Thumbprints</h1>
<p>The soothing greenery and vibrant bursts of colour dotting the St. Michael&#39;s College School (SMCS) campus have one set of fingerprints on them. They are &mdash; in large part &mdash; the handiwork of Erika Neu Sargent.</p>

<p>&quot;I do not have a &#39;typical day&#39; at St. Mike&#39;s,&quot; says Neu Sargent, the school&#39;s gardener. &quot;Every day has new challenges and gifts to reveal!&quot;</p>

<p>Whether it&#39;s creating and adorning the Remembrance Day commemoration wreaths, planting, pruning, and caring for plants across the school property and inside the school building all year long, or preparing arrangements for various school events, Neu Sargent and her green thumbs rarely get a break.</p>

<p>&quot;The start of a new school year brings about a different kind of bustle and rhythm to the school,&quot; says the native of Lethbridge, AB.&nbsp;</p>

&quot;We are happily buzzing around preparing for the return of students in September. In my work, I am still recovering from the graduation celebrations of the previous June (tending to the spring and summer plantings) and shifting the gardens over to fall harvest and Thanksgiving themes while ever-planning for the big Advent event in the courtyard.&quot;</p>

<p>Specifically, plans for the Christmas season take root during the dog days of summer says Neu Sargent. &quot;This includes 25-foot tree-sourcing beginning in July and over 1,000 pounds of fresh cut winter greens and notions to decorate the property.&quot; &nbsp;</p>

<p>Arriving to SMCS in mid-2017, Neu Sargent spent several weeks working with and observing the tireless efforts of the late Fr. Cecil Zinger, CSB, OSM who was the school&#39;s unofficial gardener and landscaping lead for years. Fr. Zinger took deep pride and great care to maintain and preserve the school&#39;s gardens and greenery for decades. He passed away in October 2017.</p>

Neu Sargent assumed the mantle, with support from the school&#39;s Facilities team, when needed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since that time, the former landscape design entrepreneur, who has worked in several provinces and in the Caribbean, estimates planting more than 10,000 bulbs around the 11-acres of school property.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And while many of those young seedlings have sprouted, there is other mature, plant life on campus that has survived and thrived for decades. Case in point, a piece of historic plant life perched inside the Bathurst Street garden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;The tree is a Ginkgo Biloba which has an endangered conservation status,&quot; explains Neu Sargent, describing the stately tree nestled across the upper parking &nbsp;lot beside the laneway entrance to the school.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Distinguished in stature, the Ginkgo is native to China. It features fan-shaped leaves which radiate bright green in the spring and a striking gold in the fall, before shedding.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;This specimen on our property is one of the largest I have ever seen,&quot; she continues. &quot;Its&#39; species is one of the oldest in existence dating back to the Jurassic period over 290 million years ago. The shape of the leaf is quite unique and the fall colour change is a brilliant gold unlike other turning leaves in the area. It will soon shed once again for the winter.&quot;</p>

<h1>A Teacher’s Journey to Getting her PhD</h1>

<p>&ldquo;The main driving force in my decision to continue pursuing my PhD after finishing my master&rsquo;s was that I had discovered a passion for both research and teaching, and I wanted more time to explore both.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Dr. Caitlin Gaffney is a French teacher at St. Michael&rsquo;s College School (SMCS), and is now among six faculty members with a PhD.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always had an inherent interest in and curiosity about other cultures, languages, and ways of life,&rdquo; says Gaffney on her decision to study French. &ldquo;Having grown up in London, Ontario, without the means to travel outside of North America as a child, I was eager to learn about what else the world had to offer. Learning French and Spanish were ways in which I could explore new perspectives and ideas from my classroom.&rdquo;</p>

<p>In September 2021,&nbsp;Gaffney received her PhD in French linguistics from the University of Toronto (U of T).</p>

<p>&ldquo;After just a year-long master&rsquo;s programme, it felt like I was just getting started, so this was the natural progression,&rdquo; she says.</p>

<h2>Continuing Education</h2>

<p>Gaffney, who also completed her master&rsquo;s degree in French linguistics at U of T, says it was there that she discovered her more specific field of study, second language acquisition.</p>

<p>&ldquo;After taking my first class in second language acquisition, I became interested in how one&rsquo;s knowledge of their first language can either facilitate or interfere with the acquisition of subsequent languages depending on a combination of different factors (e.g. typological similarity between the languages, the specific linguistic structure being acquired, one&rsquo;s proficiency level), and I immediately knew I would write my master&rsquo;s thesis in this general area,&rdquo; says Gaffney.</p>

<p>&ldquo;When I think back now to my master&rsquo;s thesis, I find it to be theoretical and esoteric, but at the time it felt like something much closer to what I hoped to do with my studies, which was to contribute to our understanding of how people learn languages,&rdquo; she adds. &ldquo;With that goal in mind, I decided I would continue to pursue my doctoral degree at U of T, and to move in an even more applied direction with my research by focusing on how individual differences between language learners can shape the ease and speed with which they acquire languages.&rdquo;</p>

<p>While Gaffney was already well into her dissertation when she began teaching at SMCS in 2020, she is thankful for the school&rsquo;s support and the value it places on the continuing education of faculty and staff.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Knowing that I had found a career and community where I was so well supported and appreciated gave me the ability and peace of mind to divide my focus between my teaching and the research,&rdquo; says Gaffney.</p>

<h2>Teaching and Researching at SMCS</h2>

<p>&ldquo;Dr. Gaffney is only one example of how our faculty brings to life goal-setting and achievement with our students,&rdquo; says Sarah D&rsquo;Angelo, Human Resources Manager at SMCS. &ldquo;Our faculty is strongly encouraged and supported to pursue professional development and educational growth on an ongoing basis. This is one of many ways they demonstrate their commitment to the improvement of their craft as teachers and is an example of a growth mindset to our students.&rdquo;</p>

<p>&ldquo;Traits of future-ready leaders include a commitment to being a life-long learner,&rdquo; adds D&rsquo;Angelo. &ldquo;When teachers actively share examples of their own development, it models characteristics we hope our students will practice in their adult lives.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Since Gaffney&rsquo;s research focused on how individual characteristics such as personality and intelligence play a role in learning a new language, there are many practical applications to her degree that influence how she teaches in the classroom.</p>

<p>&ldquo;My research is so easily applied to my approach to teaching,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;For example, my thesis has direct pedagogical implications for fostering the development of second language fluency in the classroom.&rdquo;</p>

<p>However, it&rsquo;s not just her research that she hopes to bring to her work.</p>

<p>&ldquo;When I think a little bit more deeply about how this chapter of my life will influence my work at SMCS, it&rsquo;s more about the type of mentor I&rsquo;d like to be,&rdquo; says Gaffney. &ldquo;Having had such an excellent supervisor and thesis committee, I simply hope to be able to emulate the way that they are so committed to their professions and so determined to leave a lasting mark on the world through their work.&rdquo;</p>

<p>&ldquo;Similarly, I hope to strike a balance between communicating high standards and providing a rigorous educational experience while still being encouraging and instilling confidence in my students,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;I hope that one day I&rsquo;ll have an impact on my students equivalent to the one my mentors have had on me.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>The Next Generation of Scholars</h2>

<p>When it comes to advice for SMCS students and alumni thinking of pursuing their PhDs, Gaffney says it&rsquo;s important to ensure you pick the right school and the right supervisor for you.</p>

<p>&ldquo;If you&rsquo;re going to dedicate such a significant part of your life to this goal, you should be working with the best of the best,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;Just because someone is prolific in terms of research does not mean they will be a good mentor or have enough time to invest in your development as a researcher. There were weeks when I spoke to my supervisor more than my own family, so you want to make sure it&rsquo;s someone you get along with and can work well with.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Gaffney also adds that doctoral students must also be prepared to take risks, get rejected, and be aware of &lsquo;imposter syndrome&rsquo;.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Resiliency is key &mdash; to get positive outcomes, you typically have to endure some rejections and criticisms first,&rdquo; she says.</p>

<p>The first ParenTalks presentation of the 2021-22 academic year at St. Michael&#39;s College School (SMCS) provided plenty of perspectives and insight into how best to tackle tough conversations on difficult topics with teenagers.</p>

<h2>Dr. Mark Broussenko on ensuring a safe space:</h2>

<p>&quot;One of the things that we&#39;ve been focusing more, especially as interactions become more digital, and people become more removed, and some of the old edifices of authority of people coming into my physical office have changed, is really an emphasis on effective communication, and to really focus on making sure that people know what to expect, what kinds of things are going to happen.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The point that we&#39;re trying to encourage people to do in healthcare is to signpost all of your conversations. This is just as equally effective, if not, frankly, more effective, for younger adults and adolescents, as it is for full-fledged adults. Tell them what you&#39;re going to talk about.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Signposting, especially if you&#39;re not about to have the conversation immediately, really provides a lot of reassurance and structure, and it tells people what to expect for that interaction. And then it makes that conversation safe by its initiation, because people don&#39;t think they&#39;re going to get surprised by it.&quot;</p>

<h2>Kristy Onyeaju on consent culture:</h2>

<p>&quot;Consent culture is centred around healthy relationships, and mutual consent between two parties. A key component is that it has to be continually asked for, and it can never be assumed or implied &#8212; even in the situation where there&#39;s a pre-existing relationship.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;In the wake of &lsquo;Me Too&rsquo;, and &lsquo;Time&#39;s Up&rsquo; and an emerging culture of sexual assault on university campuses, this is a topic that we cannot ignore, especially as a preparatory school for post-secondary life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;In terms of justifying the conversation, I always think it&#39;s important to say to parents, our entry point is not an assumption of wrongdoing, or the assumption that your sons would be facilitating a compromising situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;It stems more from a place of knowing the statistics. And knowing that our boys have mothers, sisters, female friends, girlfriends, that they value deeply and would love to protect. And statistically speaking, the women in their lives will come in contact with this type of conduct.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;In some scenarios, statistically speaking, our boys have women in their lives who have experienced this. And so, we value the conversation in the context of being an ally, being the person who does the right thing, if they happen to be in [that] space.&quot;</p>

<h2>Jasmine Wong on a student disclosure of being racialized:</h2>

<p>&quot;I think the first thing that you do as an adult is you check on the student. Ask him, How did that land for you? I noticed what happened. I think that for a young person to know that there is a caring and trusted adult who can help them hold whatever they&#39;ve experienced and offer them ways to work through and process that whatever it is that they experienced &#8212; is tremendously helpful.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;Kids are going to go through things that they should not have to go through. But doing it in community, doing it with an adult who can reassure them to say, that&#39;s not right, what you experienced. It&#39;s not your fault. I think those kinds of reassurances are really important.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;Then I think as an adult, as the teacher in the room, we can offer &#8212; would you like to tell me something more about what happened? Is this something that we can address?</p>

<p>As an educator, you hope that there is a community of educators who you can talk about it with and say, you know, I&#39;d really like to take this to trusted colleagues. Let&#39;s talk about what our plan is going to be in the moment.&quot;</p>

<h1>Running into SMCS History</h1>
<p>With silver and gold medals in hand along with some remarkable finishes, the St. Michael&rsquo;s College School (SMCS) Varsity Cross Country Team capped off a successful season back on the trails since the pandemic began.</p>

<p>&ldquo;It was still a very unusual year due to cohorting and COVID protocols, however, Coach Antolin, Coach Bergin, and I were happy to have been able to train these athletes and allow them to get to know each other and re-connect with their peers,&rdquo; says Paul Fitzpatrick &rsquo;95, History Department Head and coach of the SMCS Varsity Cross Country Team. &ldquo;Aside from the wonderful race performances, the feeling of camaraderie was our biggest success.&rdquo;</p>

<p>On November 6, 2021, the team competed at the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) Cross Country Running Championships at Lakefield College School.</p>

<p>The Novice Boys (Grade 9) team took home a silver medal for their accumulated score which included an individual gold medal effort by Dallas St. John for placing first out of 164 runners! Teammates, Benjamin Ottey with a 6th place finish, Thomas Arciero in 13th, Carter Albiani in 50th, and Declan Insley in 70th, rounded out the team&rsquo;s impressive performance.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Dallas has a wonderfully joyful disposition. He is a supportive teammate and hard-working athlete,&rdquo; says Fitzpatrick. &ldquo;He embodies the values and demeanour that we expect from all of our student-athletes at St. Michael&#39;s College School, and certainly on the Varsity Cross Country Team.&rdquo;</p>

<p>&ldquo;I am honoured to be a part of the cross country legacy at St. Mike&rsquo;s. It means the world to me that I can continue in this rich tradition of running and be part of the SMCS community with many other outstanding athletes,&rdquo; says St. John. &ldquo;Over the last month, I&rsquo;ve received some amazing training at SMCS which greatly benefited me and my teammates. I feel we have some of the best coaches at SMCS which assisted me in winning OFSAA and helped our novice team finish second.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Over the last 10 years, the Varsity Cross Country Team has captured a total of 11 OFSAA titles, including two gold medals, four silver, and one bronze as well as two overall men&rsquo;s team OFSAA championship titles.</p>

<p>&ldquo;This is indeed a remarkable accomplishment for Dallas St. John,&rdquo; adds Fitzpatrick. &ldquo;I was very fortunate to be a coach of the Varsity Cross Country Team when another outstanding young man from St. Michael&#39;s captured the Individual OFSAA Championship as the fastest runner in the province, and his name, as we all know, is Justyn Knight &rsquo;14! Perhaps Dallas has some new goals to set, and some Double Blue footprints to follow in.&rdquo;</p>

<p>St. John is the second SMCS student-athlete to win an individual OFSAA championship since Knight&rsquo;s run in 2013.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m also grateful for my teammates who push me to do better, but are fun to be around and are always so supportive,&rdquo; says St. John. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s also great to follow in the footsteps of our great Canadian Olympian and SMCS alumnus, Justyn Knight!&rdquo;</p>

<p>The Junior Cross Country Team represented SMCS with four runners: Keaton Wells who finished in 73rd, Jack Major in 105th, Andrew Miranda in 111th, and Giovanni Rasetta in 123rd out of 179 competitors.</p>

<p>In the final race of the day, Maxwell Roy placed 67th out of 182 on the Senior Boys team.</p>
