 <h1>Parent Socials continue with Spring Game Night</h1>

 In a year that has been filled with change and unpredictability, the St. Michael’s College School Parents’ Association (SMCSPA) has adapted and found new and creative ways to connect and engage parents virtually – and they may have saved the best for last. 

 Beginning in the fall of 2020, virtual parent socials were launched through the grade representatives. These events provided parents with an opportunity to gather by grade in an online format, without a set agenda, to discuss the ongoings of the school, ask administration questions, and support each other. 

 “Our Parents’ Association team of grade representatives planned several virtual gatherings to assure parents we are here for each other and to stay connected to the school,” says Dora Garcia-Strube, one of the lead organizers of the fall socials. “Participation was great, and it was wonderful to see parents enjoy the social interaction. I believe that caring for each other always brings great satisfaction to our lives.”

 Following the fall events, the Parents’ Association turned its attention to planning for the spring and brainstorming a new way to connect online with the parent community. 

 “The fall events were fairly well attended, but we wanted to take things up a notch and add a more fun, entertaining element for spring,” says SMCS parent Jen Hinder, the PA’s lead for the spring social event. “We recognize that families have been cooped-up over a long winter and mindful that some may be feeling Zoom fatigue, so we decided to hire a third-party, JAM, an online event planning company to help execute a fun and interactive game night.” 

 JAM, a division of Sport &#038; Social Group, a local sport and social company that pivoted at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to offer a range of online games and activities for corporate team building and group social events. 

 The SMCSPA spring parent social will take place on Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m. The first half of the evening will include gameplay hosted by JAM in small groups to ensure everyone gets involved. Following the game portion of the evening, the event will transition to chat rooms for a grade-specific social opportunity.

 The theme for the PA sponsored event is ‘Survey Says’, based on the highly popular, classic TV game show, Family Feud. All that’s required is a computer or mobile device with a camera, and a few of your favourite snacks. 

 “Our goal is to get as many SMCS parents as possible to participate and to ensure they have fun and foster their connection to the school that so many of us are missing,” says Hinder. 

 “The majority of the PA Executive will be in attendance, with some facilitating, so it will be a wonderful opportunity for parents to put faces to names and connect with their PA representatives. With families still stuck at home, we hope the unique, interactive engaging format will provide parents with an outlet to ‘get out’ and try something new and fun.” 

 “We are extremely grateful to our Grade Rep Committee for arranging awesome Parent Socials in the fall and spring,” says Ellie Maggio, SMCSPA President. “Their extraordinary effort to continually ensure parent engagement is truly a gift that our community is blessed to have.”

 <h1>Lifting the Curtain: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Virtual Events</h1>

 It is a two-man show.   

 That&#8217;s the best way to describe the lead producers behind a continuous stream of virtual events at St. Michael&#8217;s College School (SMCS) since COVID-19&#8217;s entrance, stage left.  

 With Centre for the Arts musical and drama productions paused over the last 13 months, Steven Cline, Theatre Manager and Matthew Sirna, Theatre Technical Director, had to pivot sharply themselves.   

 Both have been wearing multiple, new hats while pushing new buttons &#8212; ever since.

 &#8220;Everything has had to be envisioned anew for a virtual presentation to maintain the spirit and message of in-person events,&#8221; says Cline, who was near the end of a four-month sabbatical when the global pandemic struck. &#8220;The technical preparation for each event has been different for almost every unique event style.&#8221;  

 By the time the curtain descends on the 2020-21 academic year, SMCS will have presented more than 60 events entirely online. That&#8217;s over six events per month on average &#8212; more than doubling the number of events organized during a typical year at the school.   

 &#8220;Our role begins when an event is being developed as an idea to help determine the best way to present the event,&#8221; says Cline.

 The responsibilities then grow and multiply to include: location scouting, filming, editing, online registration, event flow and ordering, scripting, production equipment procurement, music and photo sourcing, practice runs, scheduling, live event management, post-production &#8212; among others.  

 &#8220;The adjustment to virtual events has allowed us to really lean on our transferable skills,&#8221; says Sirna, now in this fifth year at SMCS. &#8220;Not only do we have skills in theatre that transfer to a film and television setting, but we also find ourselves taking on projects and roles of a greater scope than we would in a non-pandemic season of events.”   

 As an example, &#8220;I usually am nowhere near registration or survey for data compilation,&#8221; Sirna continues. &#8220;But with our Zoom events, I have found myself taking on that role as one of the people who manage the event tools to provide analytics and feedback for future events.&#8221;

 The variety, scope, and goal of each event &#8212; especially with restricted in-school building access during lockdowns and a complete reliance on technology in separate locations &#8212; has meant a sustained focus on planning, details, and precision &#8212; to ensure successful execution.  

 &#8220;Some of the more complex events require out-of-the-box thinking such as the Remembrance Day Assembly and the Archangel’s Den,&#8221; Cline continues. &#8220;This required specialized equipment to manage the five presenting teams, five judges, and hosts in a production environment where the teams could not interact or watch the other teams&#8217; presentations!&#8221;  

 Whether conveying important information in an interactive format, showcasing student achievements, celebrating mass, or introducing the school to new families, the margin for error in an entirely virtual environment &#8212; where audience engagement is at a premium and screen fatigue a reality &#8212; is slim.

 &#8220;What one can get away with in a live performance is something that, with the full weight of a camera filming you, has to be re-shot numerous times to get it right when presenting a livestreamed version of the same event,&#8221; says Cline.  

 For the production duo, juggling multiple moving parts across various school departments, different audiences, and via multi-media platforms for each virtual event, also offers benefits.  

 &#8220;I really like having the option for more polished presentation,&#8221; says Sirna. &#8220;It brings me great joy when something looks really good, or I find a good piece of music, or something happens to line up in a really visually and audibly convenient way.&#8221;

 Cline adds, &#8220;By providing our events, along with traditional school functions such as parent-teacher conferences, the St. Michael’s community can fully participate. There are members of our community who may not have had access to our on-site events, either due to geographic location, schedule, or event burnout. For the past year, people have been able to participate no matter where they are!&#8221;  

 Both also agree, the volume and range of virtual productions have provided another positive &#8212; increased opportunities for collaboration and integration across school departments and with external stakeholders.  

 A two-man show, with a vast supporting cast.

 <h1>A Cooking Class for the SMCS Community</h1>

 A St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) first occurred on Sunday, April 25, when members of the community gathered to share in a virtual cooking class. 

 Parents, alumni, students, faculty, and staff logged in from the comfort of their kitchens in Toronto and as far away as Virginia, U.S., to learn from Chef Damian Harrington (1986-88), along with The Foodies Group founder, Steven Hellmann ’96. Working from their restaurant kitchen in Niagara Falls, guests were treated to a lesson on making homemade tomato sauce and preparing both chicken and eggplant parmigiana.

 “The Alumni Association collaborated with Steven Hellmann and The Foodies Group as they have assisted with multiple alumni events and we were more than happy to offer the SMCS community a complimentary cooking class,” shares Matt Montemurro ’05, Alumni Association Vice President. “We have lost so many opportunities to come together as a community, but this seemed like a fun way to interact with everyone and a way to give back.”

 <h1>The Impact of Service During a Pandemic: A Student&#8217;s Story</h1>

 The theme for National Volunteer Week 2021 taking place this week across Canada is, &#8220;The Value of One, The Power of Many.&#8221; It is an annual recognition of everyone who selflessly gives of their time, effort and expertise in service to others.  

 Banding together, pitching in and sharing acts of kindness within the local community and beyond has taken on even deeper meaning during the COVID-19 global pandemic.   

 At St. Michael&#8217;s College School, acts of Christian and community service are tightly woven into the fabric of student and school life in myriad ways.

 A current example of service in action comes via a Grade 12 student and his ongoing service to Hand Up Toronto, a charity whose mission is to provide &#8220;a hand up to those in need within the Greater Toronto Area,&#8221; according to its website, describing &#8220;it will go to those areas that require a hand up, providing ready-made meals, nutritional supplements and hygiene necessities.&#8221;  

 Since November 2020, Ford Camacho, an SMCS student since Grade 9 has been actively involved in making a difference in his community.   

 &#8220;Twice a month, he delivers groceries to 12 families who have been impacted by the pandemic,&#8221; says his mom. &#8220;We&#8217;re proud of what he&#8217;s doing!&#8221;  

 In this Q&#038;A, Camacho describes his service initiative and its impact, in his own words:  

 How did you come to be involved in Hand Up Toronto? 

 With the past year being difficult for so many families, I wanted to help out in any way I could. Hand Up Toronto was able to offer a safe initiative for volunteers like myself to help out.  

 In what ways do you support/volunteer with this organization?  

 This organization packages boxes with food and other essential items for families. I pick up the boxes at their warehouse and deliver them to families along my route.  

 When did you start and how often do you volunteer?  

 The program started in November of last year and continues until the end of April.   I complete my deliveries to a number of families every second Saturday.  

 Why was it important for you to participate in this particular service initiative?  

 Seeing how badly the pandemic impacted so many people in our city made me want to help out. With many food banks unable to operate due to safety reasons, this organization gave me an opportunity to help those in need.  

 Where else have you volunteered?   

 I have previously volunteered through other organizations such as Out of the Cold, Habitat for Humanity, and Engage for Change.

 What would you say you have learned in your service to Hand Up Toronto?  

 This experience has taught me that despite the obstacles faced, there is always something we can do to make someone’s life a little better.  

 What have you learned about yourself?  

 I have learned not to take anything for granted and be more appreciative of the opportunities that I have.  

 What does service, generally, mean to you in your life?  

 I believe it is important to look for ways to give back to my community. My family has taught me to do what I can to help others and that we will all need help at some point in our lives.   

 Is there a particular volunteer/service initiative you have participated in that has had a deep impact on you? Which one and why?  

 Probably my experience with Hand Up, as this year in particular, I have more of an understanding of the situation and the need out there. I’ve been able to connect with these families, and especially their kids over the past six months which has been rewarding.   

 What have you learned about service during your time at SMCS? How has that impacted you?  

 Service is a big part of the culture at SMCS and I believe it is important to practice it in your own life. Serving the broader community has become an important part of my life over the years. I think it is really important for us to contribute. Whether it’s a big or small action, it can go a long way to helping these families.

 <h1>Alumnus to Join First Class of McCall MacBain Scholars</h1>

 A St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) alumnus is one of only 20 recipients to be awarded a competitive leadership-based scholarship for their master’s and professional studies at McGill University. 

 AJ Bimm ’16 is among the first scholars to receive the inaugural <a href="https://mccallmacbainscholars.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McCall MacBain Scholarship</a>, which is awarded to applicants based on their character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity.

 “It’s hard to put it into words, but I feel so grateful to be recognized and included among such an amazing group of people,” says Bimm who graduates this year with an honours bachelor of arts from the University of Toronto where he completed a double major in urban studies and sociology. Next year, Bimm will begin his post-graduate journey pursuing a master of urban planning at McGill. 

 According to a <a href="https://www.mcgill.ca/newsroom/channels/news/meet-inaugural-class-mccall-macbain-scholars-330208" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McGill news release</a>, “The scholarship enables students to pursue a fully funded master’s or professional degree at McGill University while connecting with mentors and participating in an intensive leadership development program.” 

 The scholarship also provides students with a $2,000 monthly stipend during their academic terms so that each person can fully participate in everything the program offers, including retreats, seminars, workshops, and more with other McCall MacBain Scholars, mentors, and advisors. 

 “For me, this scholarship means that I’ll be able to pursue my passions in a more meaningful way without the same financial barriers of paying for school that I had in undergrad,” says Bimm. “This scholarship will also help me learn from other students in different fields and participate in the scholarship enrichment program that will help inform my practice as a future urban planner.” 

 To be considered, Bimm had to submit an application answering essay questions along with a personal statement on why he wants to study at McGill and how it aligns with his future career goals. 

 “Out of the 735 applicants, 132 students were invited to regional interviews. From there, 50 students were invited to participate in final interviews in March (normally this would have been in Montreal, but due to the pandemic, it was all virtual),” he says. “Following the final interviews, 20 were selected as McCall MacBain Scholars.” 

 “Overall, the application process was extremely rewarding and gave me the opportunity to reflect on some of my past experiences including my challenges and triumphs at SMCS,” says Bimm. 

 “AJ was the quintessential St. Michael’s student, who was involved in all aspects of our SMCS community,” says Gail O’Grady, Bimm’s former Guidance Counsellor. 

 Throughout Grades 9 to 12, Bimm competed on both the track &#038; field and cross country teams at SMCS. He was also the track team captain in Grade 12. He took home the gold medal in the 400m at OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) in 2013 and another gold in the 4x400m relay in 2016, among other top finishes. 

 “In my first two years [at SMCS], I was really blessed to be surrounded by some great leaders on the track team and their guidance made me feel like I wanted to help out younger students in a similar way,” says Bimm. “When it was my time to be a team captain, I tried my best to be as approachable as possible and ensure that anyone on the track team would feel like they have someone they can talk to or look up to. I think that really set the foundation for my leadership approach in university.”

 “During AJ’s time at St. Mike’s, I think he demonstrated great leadership as captain of the SMCS track team,” says O’Grady, who was one of the track and cross country coaches at SMCS when Bimm competed. “He was an excellent role model for the younger team members, both on and off the track. He was approachable and ensured all members felt welcomed and valued.” 

 In addition to being heavily involved in the school’s athletics programme, Bimm also volunteered his time tutoring younger students in French. 

 “As for service, my mom always reminded me of the importance of giving back, but I think my passion for helping my community at SMCS started in Grade 10 through the Youth Philanthropy Initiative,” he says. “I worked on a project with Covenant House, a charity supporting youth experiencing homelessness. I remember learning about some of the challenges that kids my age were going through and feeling that we can do much better to support them. That year, my team member and I won the Youth Philanthropy Initiative grant of $5,000, which we were happy to give to and support Covenant House.” 

 “I would describe AJ’s character as thoughtful, considerate, competitive, self-motivated, and kind with a genuine interest in helping others,” O’Grady adds. “He always loved the journey of learning and not simply the end result of ‘the mark’. AJ brought enthusiasm, commitment, passion, and spirit to all of his endeavors at St. Mike’s.” 

 In anticipation of the future, Bimm says, “I’m really looking forward to starting my master of urban planning and learning more about how land use policies can be leveraged to benefit communities. After I graduate, I am leaning towards working in the public sector, preferably at the municipal level as I feel like it’s where I can have the most impact.” 

 “Thank you to all my mentors at SMCS who challenged and encouraged me to be bold,” he says. “My time there definitely contributed to my character and pushed me to be a better leader in my community.”

 <h1>Alumni Info Series Rekindles Unforgettable SMCS Milestone</h1>

 It has been 60 years, and even through a virtual world, a sense of joy and raw emotion could be felt. Memories,  laughter, and proud storytelling filled the virtual room. 

 St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) alumni, friends, and hockey enthusiasts gathered on Thursday, April 1, 2021, for the most recent version of the popular Alumni Information Series, this one with a twist. 

 Members gathered virtually in a celebration of both the St. Michael’s Majors and Buzzers winning league championships in the same year. The accomplishment has only happened two other times (1933-34 and 1944-45) in the school’s storied hockey history.

 The jam-packed event was more than just an opportunity to remember and celebrate the 60th anniversary of both hockey championships. It also provided a virtual venue for a long-overdue reunion for so many connected to this special year. 

 Hosted by Steve Paikin, TVO anchor and host of ‘The Agenda’, who kicked off the event with interviews with members and special guests associated with the 1961 Buzzers and Majors teams. 
 “It was a magical night that featured numerous Majors/Buzzers highlighted by the giddy joy of connecting with former teammates and mentors such as Hugh McDougall, OSM,” reflects Larry Colle ’69, a member of the evening’s organizing committee. “The event underlined the players&#8217; enduring connection to St. Michael&#8217;s College School over six decades.”

 The 90-minute interview portion of the evening included appearances from Dave Keon ‘60, OSM, Ed Sandford ’49, the Majors: Dave Draper ’60, Barry MacKenzie ’63, Andre Champagne ’62, Terry O’Malley ’60, E.J. Bauer, representing Fr. Bauer ’44, CSB, and the Buzzers: Kevin Burkett ’62, and Bill Crawford ’61. 

 The players shared their memories of their SMCS and hockey careers as viewers were shown clips of film and photos of the panel during the history-making season.

 “Congratulations. The evening was truly memorable with Steve Paikin, Dave Keon, Gary Smith ’61, Gerry Cheevers ’59 et al, all at their best and all so happy to be part of it and the rest of us able to share,” says Burkett. “For me, many happy memories were refreshed and old friends revisited. Every alumni initiative should strive to emulate.” 

 Over a two-hour Zoom reunion, viewers joined the panel to ask questions. One viewer had the opportunity to confirm if a pair of skates received by Fr. Bauer were actually owned and worn by Keon – they were not! Gerry Cheevers called in to participate in the reunion and committee members surprised him with Forbes Kennedy. In 1969, the pair had an epic on-ice altercation during the first game of the quarter-final series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins. After a few jokes, both confirmed they have remained good friends. Family members of Joe Primeau ’48 and Red Kelly ’46, OSM tuned in and shared their SMCS memories on behalf of their departed relatives.

 “The evening with the 1960-61 Majors and Buzzers was an amazing experience for all who participated.  The regaling of stories from their time as SMCS boarders and teammates were so interesting to hear,” shares Kimberley Bailey, Director of Advancement. “These stories are so very important as they represent the history of the school. We are very fortunate that we are able to record these sessions for archival purposes”.
