How SMCS Partners with Parents in Student Development
Starting Grade 7 is a big step not just for students, but for families, too. It’s the beginning of a new chapter filled with excitement, discovery, and yes, a few nerves. The transition to high school can feel like a leap. At St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), we get it, and we’re here to walk with you every step of the way.
For over 170 years, SMCS has been helping boys grow into young men of integrity, purpose, and compassion. We combine rigorous academics with strong Catholic values and a deep commitment to student development. It all starts in Grade 7.
Here’s how we help make that transition to SMCS smooth and successful, and how your family can prepare for the journey ahead.
Understanding the SMCS Experience
What Sets SMCS Apart?
St. Michael’s College School is Canada’s only Catholic, Basilian independent school educating boys from Grades 7 to 12 in a university-preparatory programme with more than 50 athletic teams and more than 60 co-curricular clubs and activities. That might sound impressive — and it is — but what really matters is how this foundation supports your son.
At SMCS, we believe in educating the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. Our mission is rooted in Catholic values, delivered through a holistic education that emphasizes academic excellence, strong character, and lifelong brotherhood. Students are encouraged to lead with kindness, think critically, and strive for excellence in all they do.
What Does Grade 7 Look Like at SMCS?
Grade 7 is a year of firsts: new teachers, new friends, new routines. At SMCS, it’s also the beginning of a carefully designed programme that prepares students for high school and beyond.
Students take a full academic course load, math, science, English, French, religion, social studies, and the arts. All of these subjects are taught by subject specialists. Learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Grade 7 students are introduced to a wide range of co-curricular activities: clubs, athletics, music, robotics, service projects, and more. Behind it all is a network of support, including dedicated teachers, coaches, guidance counsellors, learning enrichment, and peer mentors.
Just as importantly, students begin developing the soft skills that will help them reach their full potential. Soft skills are the personal and interpersonal abilities that shape how we work and learn with others. These include communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, resilience, time management, and accountability. These skills are intentionally cultivated both in the classroom and through co-curricular experiences, providing students with a foundation to grow into confident, adaptable learners.
At the heart of Grade 7 is the focus on teaching students “How to Learn.” By guiding them to reflect on their learning process, set goals, and respond positively to challenges, SMCS equips students with strategies that foster independence and curiosity. This holistic approach ensures that our students are prepared not only for the academic demands of high school, but also for success in life beyond the classroom.

Top Tips for a Smooth Transition
1. Get Familiar with the School Environment
One of the best ways to ease first-day nerves is to get to know the school before classes even start. That’s why we offer orientation events and campus tours for new families. These opportunities allow students to walk the halls, meet their teachers, and start feeling at home.
In the first week of school, Grade 7 students attend a special outdoor education camp: a hands-on, team-building experience that fosters friendships, builds confidence, and kicks off the year in a fun and memorable way. It’s a great chance for boys to bond, get active, and start creating lasting connections.
At any time during the year, students are encouraged to lean on the support around them. Teachers are approachable and invested in each student’s success. Guidance counsellors help with everything from academic planning to emotional well-being. Peer mentors provide friendly advice and encouragement.
2. Stay Organized
A big part of success in Grade 7 comes down to one word: organization. Thankfully, SMCS students have access to Edsby, an online platform for communication and planning. Students and parents can view class schedules, assignments, grades, and school updates — including the all-important morning announcements.
Through our morning announcements, students can find out about upcoming tryouts, club meetings, and other activities. Encourage your son to check Edsby daily so he doesn’t miss out.
Getting into a routine is key. Students quickly learn how to manage their time using planners, checklists, and digital tools. Teachers help guide them through this transition, with an emphasis on building habits that will serve them well throughout high school and beyond.
3. Build Good Habits Early
Grade 7 lays the foundation for everything that comes next. That’s why it’s the perfect time to start building good academic habits. Establish a regular homework routine. Create a quiet space for studying. Encourage your son to ask questions, take notes, and review material regularly.
At SMCS, we place a strong emphasis on study skills, time management, and self-advocacy. Our teachers teach students how to learn, and our learning enrichment specialists are always available for extra support.

4. Get Involved
One of the fastest ways to feel connected at a new school is to get involved. SMCS offers over 60 clubs, dozens of sports teams, and vibrant programmes in music, drama, robotics, and more. Whether your son loves soccer, chess, debating, or digital arts, there’s something here for him.
Encourage your son to try something new, even if he’s unsure. Joining a club or team helps build confidence, create friendships, and establish a sense of belonging. And with so many options, there’s no shortage of ways to explore passions and develop new ones.
Morning announcements (posted daily on Edsby) are the go-to place for finding out what’s happening around the school. Encourage your son to check them regularly so he can jump in when opportunities arise.
5. Ask for Help When Needed
No student is expected to have it all figured out on Day 1. At SMCS, we foster a culture where it’s okay to ask for help. In fact, it’s encouraged.
Whether it’s a tricky math concept, a rough day socially, or just needing advice on how to balance homework and hockey practice, there are people here to help. Teachers, guidance counsellors, learning specialists, a school social worker, and even older students are ready to support each boy on his journey.
As a parent, one of the best things you can do is keep the lines of communication open — both with your son and with the school. Parents are also invited to take an active role in our community through the St. Michael’s College School Parents’ Association, where you can connect with other families and contribute in meaningful ways.
Embrace Community
More than anything, SMCS is about family. From the first day, your son becomes part of something bigger than himself — a brotherhood rooted in shared values and mutual respect. We work hard to cultivate positive social interactions, empathy, and a sense of responsibility to one another.
Through shared experiences — in the classroom, on the field, at camp, and beyond — boys form friendships that last a lifetime. They learn what it means to lead, to serve, and to grow as young men of character.
Final Message to Parents
We know this transition comes with a mix of emotions. Pride. Hope. Maybe a little anxiety. That’s normal, and you’re not alone.
At St. Michael’s College School, your son will be known, supported, and challenged. He’ll be guided by caring teachers, surrounded by positive role models, and welcomed into a strong, faith-based community.
This is the beginning of an incredible journey, and we’re honoured to be on it with you.
