<h1>Alumni Networking Event Featuring Anthony Carella ’17</h1>
<p>The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Alumni Association capped off a fulfilling 2025-26 year with another successful Alumni Networking Event, bringing together graduates from across generations for an evening of connection, inspiration, and meaningful conversation.</p>
<p>Keynote speaker Anthony Carella ’17, who recently completed the 2025 World’s Toughest Row—a 3,000-mile unsupported transatlantic rowing race— kicked off the event. Carella shared his remarkable journey with alumni, reflecting on the challenges, lessons, and experiences that shaped his path from student-athlete to endurance rower and environmental restoration professional.</p>

<p>Moderator and Alumni Association President Andrew Gidaro ’02 opened the evening by welcoming attendees and highlighting the importance of alumni engagement. Gidaro reflected on the shared experiences that unite St. Michael’s graduates and on how these events strengthen the SMCS community after graduation.</p>
<p>During his keynote, Carella reflected on his time at SMCS, where he competed in hockey at the U14, junior, and prep levels, as well as U14 lacrosse. He spoke about continuing his athletic journey at Hebron Academy in Maine before earning an academic scholarship to Hobart College in Geneva, New York.</p>

<p>Carella was introduced to rowing at Hobart. Having never rowed before, he walked on to the Division I rowing team and embraced the challenge of learning an entirely new sport. Following Carella’s graduation, where he earned a bachelor of arts in environmental studies, he attended the University of Victoria to pursue ecological restoration studies while competing for the varsity rowing team. In 2022, he earned a silver medal in the men’s 8+ event at the Canadian University Rowing Championships.</p>
<p>Carella spoke about the perseverance, discipline, and resilience required to prepare for and complete the World’s Toughest Row. Alongside his teammates, he spent more than a month at sea, overcoming physical exhaustion, unpredictable weather, and the mental demands of continuous rowing. The team also raised more than US$100,000 in support of charities focused on youth development, adding a philanthropic purpose to their extraordinary accomplishment.</p>
<p>Throughout his presentation, Carella emphasized the value of embracing discomfort, pursuing opportunities outside of one’s comfort zone, and maintaining a growth mindset. He credited the lessons learned while at SMCS with helping him navigate challenges both on and off the water.</p>

<p>“Rowing the Atlantic was the experience of a lifetime, which I will never forget, but I’d also like to emphasize the journey it took to get there,” says Carella. “While the three and a half years of preparation gave me the mindset and skills to complete the row, they also gave me lessons to apply to all areas of life. When things get tough, all you can do is take the next best step.”</p>
<p>Following the keynote, Carella joined Gidaro for a Q&amp;A session, where alumni asked about his transatlantic journey and athletic career. </p>

<h1>New Service Partnerships Enrich SMCS Experience</h1>
<p>Service to others is a key pillar at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS), with goodness in action at the heart of our community.</p>
<p>Through a variety of service initiatives that support local and broader community organizations and missions, our students have meaningful opportunities to grow in faith and character and to fulfill the call to serve by sharing time and resources. In support of community partners, students are able to engage in rich experiences that deepen their understanding of their neighbourhood, school community, and society.</p>

<p>Over the past school year, SMCS has established two key service partnerships with the Hillcrest Community Food Bank and the North York Harvest Food Bank.</p>
<h2>Hillcrest Community Food Bank</h2>
<p>In February, SMCS partnered with Hillcrest Community Food Bank to help address growing food insecurity in our local community.</p>
<p>Established in 2023, Hillcrest Community Food Bank is a collaboration between Hillcrest Christian Church, Hillcrest Community School, and the Daily Bread Food Bank. They are located a short walk from SMCS—serving those facing food insecurity in our own backyard.</p>
<p>Norah Higgins, SMCS guidance counsellor and Hillcrest resident, recruited student volunteers to assist in this new partnership, and the response was overwhelming, with more than 50 Grade 10, 11, and 12 students signing up.</p>
<p>Every Friday, five students travelled to Hillcrest Christian Church to supervise and mentor Grades 5-6 Hillcrest Public School students, who worked during their lunch hour counting, sorting, and organizing the food donations. The partnership also included a Sunday commitment from another team of five SMCS students, who served a three-hour shift greeting clients accessing the food bank, helping distribute food, and acting as interpreters when needed.</p>

<p>“Sunday was a blast. It was cool to not only volunteer with some friends but also get to meet new people who were also volunteering,” says Padraic Landry, Grade 11. “The people coming in for food were also very kind, and it was overall a great experience that I would definitely want to take part in again.”</p>
<p>For three months, six SMCS senior students also had the opportunity to work with James Hinebaugh, a community volunteer overseeing the food bank’s tech improvements, to create and optimize system operations for managing the food bank’s volunteer, inventory, and client tracking.</p>
<p>“Our volunteer management team helped in rebuilding the way the food bank handles its weekly sign-ups, including redesigning sign-up forms and creating a master database which automatically sorts volunteers into their correct shifts,” says Yuel Tesfay, Grade 12. “This replaces the old way of manually organizing names, allowing the staff to simply copy and paste accurate schedules directly into their emails.”</p>
<p>The need for the food bank in our community was immediately apparent, with client visits jumping from 50 families to nearly 200 in the first three weeks of opening. Over 50 per cent of the food bank’s clients began accessing food banks in the past year, and 25 per cent of clients are children and youth.</p>
<p>“As members of this community, I am very proud that our SMCS students have committed their time and energy to give back locally to this important initiative,” says Higgins. “In the coming years, our goal is to expand the programme to include food, clothing, books, and toy drives. Many students want to help, and this initiative is a real-life example of ‘Be the Good’ and service in action.”</p>
<h2>North York Harvest Food Bank</h2>
<p>The roots of the SMCS partnership with North York Harvest trace back to a fall SMCS staff retreat, during which members of our faculty and staff had the opportunity to volunteer at various community service initiatives, including North York Harvest.</p>

<p>“This experience was deeply impactful, as it allowed participants to witness firsthand the realities of food insecurity in Toronto,” says Alessandra Lombardi, SMCS teacher. “Seeing the growing need within our own community reinforced the importance of giving back and highlighted how vital it is to support others in meaningful ways and uphold the dignity of every person.”</p>
<p>Inspired by this experience and through a connection established with North York Harvest Community &amp; Corporate Fundraising Manager, Judith Reda, SMCS developed an opportunity for Grade 12 religious education and morality students to put their learning into action.</p>
<p>Throughout the year, students spent class time exploring key themes such as human dignity, the common good, and solidarity. Visiting the North York Harvest Food Bank allowed them to live out these teachings in a tangible way while also putting their faith into action.</p>
<p>“Students learned that service is not just something we talk about in theology class—it is something we do,” says Lombardi. “This trip and experience taught empathy, responsibility, and the Christian call to act with compassion, love, and service. Students saw how small acts of service—sorting food, organizing donations, offering time—can bring real hope to families. Students recognized that living a virtuous life means putting faith, charity, and justice into action.”</p>
<p>Grade 12 SMCS students embodied the virtue of charity by taking a leadership role in organizing and spearheading a school-wide Lenten Food Drive, rallying the broader school community to contribute to the cause, and through their hands-on work at the warehouse.</p>
<p>The school community collected and donated 1,200 lb. of food to North York Harvest. During their experiential field trip, students helped sort and organize both the food they donated and additional food already at the warehouse, contributing to the processing of an impressive 16,982 lb. of food over two days.</p>

<p>It gave them the opportunity to spearhead a school-wide initiative through a food drive campaign that included video announcements, loading and moving donations, posters, and challenges to encourage the school community to donate.</p>
<p>That sense of responsibility to make a difference extended beyond the walls of the food bank warehouse.</p>
<p>“Volunteering with North York Harvest Food Bank was a great opportunity to put what we learned at St. Michael’s into action,” says Stefan Lukowski, Grade 12. “It gave us the chance to make a difference and begin our journey as St. Michael’s men who change the world through lives of faith, character, and service.”</p>
<p>Real-world encounters with people experiencing food insecurity help SMCS students better understand the importance of compassion, justice, and faith-driven action—it’s rooted in the school’s commitment to experiential education and serving others.</p>
<p>“One of the most impactful moments was when students realized how even an hour of sorting food can make a tangible difference in someone’s life,” adds Lombardi. “I have seen students develop genuine empathy, ask thoughtful questions, and reflect deeply on their responsibility toward others. I have seen students come together to collaborate and work hard for a very important cause.”</p>
<p>The relationship with North York Harvest Food Bank did not end with this experience—many students were inspired to return on their own to continue serving those most vulnerable and to help reinforce the school’s partnership with the food bank.</p>

<h1>Basilians Announce New Leadership</h1>
<p>With over 200 years of leadership in Catholic education, the Congregation of St. Basil (Basilian Fathers) met on July 13 to elect new leadership as part of their 2026 General Chapter.</p>
<p>Established in France in 1822, the Basilians founded St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) in 1852 and remains under their direction. Fr. Andrew Leung, CSB, president, and Fr. William May, CSB, vice president of mission and spirituality, serve on the school&#8217;s leadership team as Basilian representatives.</p>

I will continue my dedication as a board member of St. Michael&#8217;s. I&#8217;m counting on the prayers of the good people at St. Michael&#8217;s, and I promise that I am praying for St. Michael&#8217;s community every day.”</p>

Basilians Announce New Leadership

<h1>Graduation Day: Congratulations to the Class of 2026</h1>
<p>The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Class of 2026 was honoured and celebrated on June 25, 2026, with a formal graduation Mass and exercises.</p><p>The morning began with the traditional Mass at neighbouring Holy Rosary Church, celebrated by Fr. Leung, CSB, Fr. May, CSB, and Deacon David Fischer. Following Mass, students gathered for the annual class photo before sitting down with faculty and staff for lunch.<br /><br />

<p>In the afternoon, graduates assembled in the gym for the formal graduation exercises. The graduation keynote was delivered by Rudyard Griffiths, who is Chair of Munk Debates, Publisher of The Hub, and Senior Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs.</p><p>“Giving yourself over to something larger than yourself is what strengthens your character and grows relationships that matter—and you won&#8217;t do any of this alone. The friendships, the lessons, the personal growth that come through continuing service will fortify you for a lifetime,” says Griffiths. “You have a lifetime to take risks, to serve, to grow with and through your friends.”<br /><br /><br /></p>

<p>Following the keynote, graduate diplomas were conferred. The Class was then addressed by one of its own, valedictorian Leos Kapasouris, who was thankful for his time at SMCS. He spoke about the strength of the SMCS brotherhood, and he challenged his classmates to step forward with courage.</p><p>“We all only have one life, one chance, one moment to be something great. So, do what you&#8217;re passionate about—take chances and don&#8217;t be afraid to fail, be different, be unique, and never try to be someone you&#8217;re not,” says Kapasouris. “Don&#8217;t be afraid to think outside the box. Don&#8217;t be afraid to fail big and don&#8217;t be afraid to dream big.</p><p>“God has given every single one of us a talent, a passion, a reason to keep moving forward. So, you should never be afraid to act because it&#8217;s better to take action and fail than simply sit back and wonder what could have happened if you just put in a little more effort. To St. Mike&#8217;s, thank you for teaching me what it means to be a man and for the best four years of my life. May God bless the St. Mike&#8217;s graduating class of 2026.”</p><p>Following the graduation exercises, the Class of 2026 made its way from the gymnasium to the front lawn for a long-standing SMCS tradition: walking through the Bathurst Street Students&#8217; Arch for the very first time. Students don&#8217;t pass through the arch until this moment, so for many graduates, it&#8217;s one of the most meaningful steps of the day.</p>

Graduation Day: Congratulations to the Class of 2026

<h1>Senior Music Students Showcase Final ISP Projects</h1>
<p>From learning a new instrument to producing and recording an original song, Grade 12 St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) music students showcased their incredible talent through their final music projects, capping off their SMCS journey.</p>
<p>“The Grade 12 ISP (individual study project) assignment is a way to allow our graduating music students to embark on a journey of discovery in an area of interest, such as enhanced performance on an instrument they already play, composition/arranging, research, or new musical skills such as learning a new instrument,” says Jamie Oatt, Department Head of Music. “This year we once again had some incredible projects representing months of preparation and dedication.”</p>
<p>Check out some of the projects that were featured at this year’s Spring Concert Series in May 2026.</p>

<h2>Marco Boci</h2><p>Instruments: Trombone, Piano, Euphonium, Tenors<br />Fall 2026: McMaster University – Life Sciences</p>
<p>Marco Boci performed the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 for his music ISP project.</p>
<p>“This concerto is considered one of Mozart&#8217;s most celebrated works and requires a high level of technical precision, musicality, and stylistic understanding to perform effectively,” he says. “This project was especially meaningful to me because piano has been a major part of my life for many years. I am currently studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Level 10, and hope to eventually earn my ARCT diploma, the second-highest certification awarded by the RCM. Performing this concerto represented an important milestone in my musical journey and gave me the opportunity to apply years of training to a challenging and rewarding experience.”</p>

<p>Boci began learning the piece in November 2025, totalling six months of preparation to learn the notes, refine technique, develop musical expression, and build consistency throughout the piece.</p>
<p>“I hope listeners noticed the smaller musical details that are easy to overlook, such as the ornaments, trills, and subtle phrasing throughout the performance. While these moments may seem minor, they are incredibly important in Mozart&#8217;s music and require a great deal of precision and control to execute properly.”</p>
<p>He adds, “This project reinforced the importance of consistent, long-term practice. I learned that difficult music cannot simply be mastered in large bursts of work; many passages require days or even weeks of focused repetition before they can be performed confidently and musically. The experience also taught me the value of pursuing excellence rather than settling for ‘good enough.’ In many academic subjects, a score of 90 per cent is considered outstanding. In music, however, missing even a small percentage of notes or musical details can significantly affect the overall performance. As a result, music demands a unique level of precision, discipline, and attention to detail. Through this project, I became a more patient, focused, and dedicated musician.”</p>

<h2>Jacob DaCambra</h2><p>Instruments: Tenor Sax, French Horn<br />Fall 2026: University of British Columbia – Engineering</p>
<p>Jacob DaCambra opted to learn a completely new instrument for his ISP project. At the Spring Concert, he sang Dos Oruguitas by Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with his own guitar accompaniment.</p>
<p>“I learned this song specifically because it was a song I really enjoyed, and it allowed me to connect to my language more,” says DaCambra, who practiced a little bit every day from October until the performance in May. “My mom is from Spain, and I have been learning Spanish recently. This song was sung in Spanish, and it was really fun learning the meaning of the words behind it.”</p>

<p>Watching videos of guitar covers, looking up chords, and using other online resources were incredibly useful to DaCambra as he learned how to perform the song.</p>
<p>“I feel that being able to sing while seamlessly playing the chords as an accompaniment was the hardest part of the learning process, and I hope that people notice the quality of the accompaniment for the singing,” he says.</p>
<p>“This assignment helped me realize the full value of discipline as a musician. Practicing for three hours in one day is good, but not as good as practicing 15 minutes a day for 12 days. Consistency is the key to success.”</p>

<h2>Leo Favero</h2><p>Instruments: Trombone, Tuba, Tenors<br />Fall 2026: Western University – Medical Sciences</p>
<p>For Leo Favero’s ISP, he wrote ‘Half For You’, created the digital accompaniment for the piece, and performed it as a duet at the Spring Concert. The piece has a showstopper feel with two verses and four choruses. It features solo violins, violin, and cello sections, mallet percussion, pitched percussion, guitar, and trumpet that combine to create a symphonic atmosphere while still bringing pop-style energy.</p>
<p>“The creation and performance of ‘Half For You’ is a meaningful piece to me, as it marks a point in many lives where one will feel as if they finally belong and have that one special person,” says Favero. “For me, this was many times in my high school career, where many special but false words were said to each other in plenty of different forms, inspiring me enough to write my feelings down in the form that I know best, a song.”</p>

<p>Favero began writing the song in February 2025, working on the foundation, including the primary piano, string melodies, lyrics, and chords. Then in the fall, he completed the bulk of what remained, including the percussion, harmonies, and violin trio.</p>
<p>“This song was certainly a turning point in my life. The idea for such particularly sprouted from my desire to develop my music theory knowledge, to express myself in a deeper, truer way, and to become more familiar with music. I have always been stuck between my passion for the sciences and arts, having to work diligently to catch up with both to keep my options open. Because of this, ‘Half For You’ had taken a while due to the development of my abilities, my knowledge of each instrument, what felt comfortable and real, and what my capabilities were as a person at the time.”</p>
<p>He adds, “As someone who has always enjoyed playing and writing music but has spent years developing my understanding of music theory, composition, and instrumentation, this piece represents how far I have come as a musician and as a person. If there is one thing I want others to take away from my ISP, it is the idea that improvement comes through patience, effort, and believing in yourself even when progress feels slow.”</p>

<h2>Paul Karras</h2><p>Instrument: Trumpet<br />Fall 2026: McGill University – Music Composition</p>
<p>Paul Karras created an EP consisting of two songs that he orchestrated and professionally recorded, then uploaded to Spotify and other streaming services. He performed one of the songs during our Spring Concert Series.</p>
<p>“This project means a lot to me as one of the songs, ‘City of your Dreams’, is one of my earliest songs I ever wrote”, he says. “To see it come together in such a polished way really helped me see this ISP through to the end.”</p>

<p>From start to finish, his ISP took around five months to complete, which included countless hours of preparation, writing, polishing, and recording.</p>
<p>“It was my first time in a recording setting, and I learned a lot from it, from preparation for next time as well as how things in general work in the studio. I am also more comfortable in my songwriting abilities, as the positive and critical feedback from my peers and teachers helped me grow and learn from this experience.”</p>
<p>For Karras, starting the project was the hardest part because writing requires inspiration—from his surroundings, situations, and feelings—and it can’t be forced. Once he starts, he’s not satisfied until it’s complete, followed by rewriting and polishing until he has the final product that he’s proud of.</p>
<p>“I hope that people can clearly see how much of my soul I poured into these songs. Both of them come from a really special place in my heart, and being able to share that most vulnerable spot with the world is something I can&#8217;t describe. It&#8217;s what makes me so interested in music.”</p>

<h1>Celebrating Our 2026 Grade 8 Graduates</h1>
<p>For the 101 young men crossing the stage on June 18, 2026, the Grade 8 Graduation ceremony was less about saying goodbye and more about turning the page to a new chapter.</p>
<p>Celebrating with a Mass and diploma presentation, the SMCS community honoured the Grade 8 class for their dedication to goodness, discipline, and knowledge. Amidst the ceremony, St. Michael’s Medals, subject awards, and academic achievement awards recognizing overall excellence were presented to students.</p>

<p>“It has been a time of learning, achieving, and a gathering of knowledge for our students—especially the Grade 8 students, most of whom have been here for two years, though some only one,” says Fr. Andrew Leung, CSB, president. “Throughout the one or two years, Grade 8s, you have strived to be students of St. Michael&#8217;s and followed in the footsteps of many other students to experience, relate, and understand the school&#8217;s motto better: Teach me goodness, discipline, and knowledge. Some days there were great successes, while others it has been a challenge. Yet all of you who are here have worn the motto of the crest with great pride.”</p>
<p>Maksym Hetmanczuk, who received the SMCS Parents’ Association Fellowship Award for best embodying the school motto, delivered a heartfelt valedictorian address to his classmates and guests.</p>
<p>&#8220;Two years ago, most of us walked into these yellow brick halls for the very first time. We came from different schools and different neighbourhoods,” says Hetmanczuk. “Some of us were nervous; some of us pretended we weren&#8217;t. We didn&#8217;t start our elementary academic journeys together, but we&#8217;re finishing this part of it together. And somewhere in the last two years, we stopped being a bunch of kids in the same building. We became brothers there for one another, and that will never change.&#8221;</p>
<p>Congratulations to the graduating Grade 8 Class and best wishes on the next stage of your SMCS journey.</p>
