<h1>Matthew Simpson Commits to Loyola Maryland for Golf</h1>
<p>St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Grade 12 student-athlete Matthew Simpson has officially committed to Loyola Maryland University, where he will join the Greyhounds’ golf programme in 2026.</p>
<p>“I chose Loyola Maryland because of their well-respected educational programme,” says Simpson, who plans to pursue a degree in either business or finance. “I appreciate that it’s a smaller school environment, similar to the community at SMCS.</p>
<p>“I also really liked the facilities they had to offer, which feature both indoor and outdoor training areas. On top of that, the coach was very welcoming and accommodating when I visited, which made a huge difference.”</p>

<p>A dedicated golfer since his youth, when he picked up the sport at age two, Simpson enjoyed a long and competitive junior golf career, honing his skills at Lambton Golf and Country Club.</p>
<p>A true student-athlete, Simpson earned SMCS honour roll status every year while also balancing his time as a multi-sport athlete, including a season of junior basketball, two years as keeper with the senior soccer team, and all six years on the golf team.</p>
<p>“St. Mike&#8217;s really helped me to understand how to manage my time and balance school and golf, and I am grateful for that,” he says. “My school golf experience was unforgettable. Winning back-to-back OFSAA championships in 2024 and 2025, getting to compete in Houston against St. Thomas, our brother Basilian school, and I’m also looking forward to our upcoming event in Palm Springs.”</p>
<p>Among his personal golf highlights, Simpson tied for fourth at the Golf Ontario Super Camp, captured an individual bronze medal at OFSAA in 2024, qualified for the 2025 US Junior Amateur in Dallas, Texas, and Team Ontario for 2026.</p>
<p>“Coaching Matthew over the past six years has been a privilege, and we are extremely proud of him for achieving his goal of playing Division I golf at Loyola University Maryland,” says Paul Ruta, teacher and golf team coach. “His growth as both a player and a person has been remarkable. Loyola is getting a talented golfer, a fierce competitor, and a great teammate. I’m excited to see him take this next step and continue to develop in a strong collegiate programme. I have no doubt he’ll make an immediate impact at the Division I level.”</p>
<p>As he approaches the mid-way point of his final year at SMCS, Simpson is ready to take the work ethic and discipline he gained at St. Michael&#8217;s to the university stage at Loyola, where he will begin the next chapter of his academic and athletic career.</p>

<h1>St. Michael’s College School Remembers</h1>
<p>The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) community gathered on Tuesday, November 11, to honour Remembrance Day. </p>
<p>Originally called Armistice Day, beginning in 1919 to mark the end of the First World War, and later renamed Remembrance Day in 1931, when the day was fixed to November 11 each year. </p>
<p>This year, SMCS students commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War (1939-1945) and honoured the 93 men of St. Michael’s who gave their lives in that conflict.</p>

<p>During Remembrance Week, Grade 10 history students honoured their fallen brothers by inscribing their names on poppies. These large-scale poppies were prominently displayed on the Bathurst St. fence alongside a replica of our memorial wall. Inside the school, a visual display of the Second World War timeline was set up near the chapel, with members of the community adding images of family members who served and other commemorative items. In addition, morning prayers were dedicated to various reflections, including the contributions of Indigenous Canadians to the Canadian Forces, the 110th anniversary of the 2nd Battle of Ypres, and the 110th anniversary of the writing of <em>In Flanders Fields</em>.</p>
<p>The service on November 11 featured an address from Sub-Lt. Jack Murphy ’16, naval officer. Murphy spoke about his career path, including the various postings he’s had, along with the impact this day continues to have on him.</p>

<p>Just two weeks after graduating from SMCS, Murphy joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He completed an honours degree in political science from Royal Military College and a master’s in arts from Carleton University. Murphy is now posted to HMCS Ottawa following his promotion to sub-lieutenant, and resides in Victoria, B.C., with his partner Naomi.</p>

<h1>Fall Drama: Treasure Island Set to Hit the Stage</h1>
<p>Ahoy, theatre lovers! Preparations are in full swing at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) for this year’s thrilling fall dramatic production of Treasure Island, based on the legendary novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.</p>
<p>“Our talented student actors, dedicated stage crew, and passionate theatre staff are hard at work, bringing this epic tale of adventure to life,” says Jamie Oatt, Fall Drama Producer and Head of Music. “It is quite unique how quickly our Fall Drama brings together a diverse group of dedicated and gifted students to celebrate and showcase our collective passion for dramatic arts.”</p>

<p>Set sail with us on a swashbuckling journey filled with sword fights, mysterious skeletons, and buried treasure on deserted tropical islands. At the heart of the story is Jim Hawkins, a courageous 14-year-old boy who stumbles upon a secret pirate map that launches him into a world of danger, discovery, and self-growth. As Hawkins navigates treacherous waters and encounters unforgettable characters, audiences will be swept up in a timeless coming-of-age adventure.</p>
<p>This year’s production promises high-energy performances, stunning visuals, and a theatrical experience that will captivate audiences of all ages.</p>
<p>Join SMCS for four public performances from November 13 to 15, 2026, at the St. Michael’s College School Centre for the Arts. Whether you&#8217;re a longtime fan of the story or discovering it for the first time, Treasure Island is sure to be a voyage to remember.</p>
<p><strong>Here are five fast facts about the upcoming performances:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>This will be the first time SMCS has produced Treasure Island as a stage play.</li>
<li>The production includes a total of 15 cast members, featuring two female cast members from GTA schools, and approximately 10 stage crew.</li>
<li>Students will be working with a professional fight choreographer to stage several sword fights that occur in the script—a unique and real-world learning opportunity for the actors, with the use of actual stage weapons as they would on a professional stage.</li>
<li>Fr. Bill May, CSB will be joining the cast in the role of the infamous Captain Flint&#8230; You don’t want to miss his epic performance!</li>
<li>The stage will feature a replica of a galleon complete with a mast and sail—thanks to the creative collaboration of stage designer and alumnus Matthew Gyulay ’84.</li>

Fall Drama: Treasure Island Set to Hit the Stage

<h1>Spanish Club Marks Día de Muertos</h1>
<p>What began as a small initiative in October 2021, has grown into one of the most visible and important activities of the year for the St. Michael’s College School Spanish Club.</p>
<p>Día de Muertos, or ‘Day of the Dead,’ is a Mexican holiday dedicated to remembering the deceased and welcoming their souls back to the living world for a celebration. Celebrated on November 1 and 2, an altar is traditionally built in honour of departed loved ones, with ‘ofrendas’ (offerings) displayed.</p>

<h1>Golf Team Goes Back-to-Back with Second Straight OFSAA Championship</h1>
<p>It’s déjà vu all over again for the St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Blue Eagles Golf Team as they soared to their second straight OFSAA provincial championship at the challenging Lindsay Golf and Country Club, cementing their reputation as a leading high school golf programme in Ontario.</p>

<p>“Winning an OFSAA championship means a tremendous amount to both our team and the entire school community. It’s the highest level of high school golf in the province, so it represents not just talent, but dedication, teamwork, passion, and perseverance,” says Paul Ruta, teacher and golf team coach alongside Mike Ross ’85 and Nunzio Corrente. “For our players, it’s validation of the countless hours they’ve put in, balancing schoolwork and competition. For the school, it’s a point of pride. It shows that our student-athletes excel not only academically but also in representing our values of sportsmanship, resilience, and excellence.”</p>

<p>In the open division, SMCS was led by Joseph Totino, Grade 10, who captured an individual bronze medal with two days of impressive golf (71-73), while last year&#8217;s OFSAA bronze medalist, Matthew Simpson, Grade 12, finished in a tie for 7th (70-79), and Tyler Young, Grade 12, finished 49th (84-82).</p>
<p>&#8220;Winning back-to-back OFSAA championships was our goal, and we definitely did that. I give thanks to God for giving us these talents to be able to accomplish this victory in his glory,” says Totino. “The coaches played a huge role in our success during the tournament. Next year, we look to 3-peat.&#8221;</p>

<p>In the high school division, Matthew Castellarin, Grade 12, chipped in with a 5th place finish (83-79).</p>
<p>&#8220;The golf course is a great track, but it played tough with the weather,” says Castellarin. “The banquet was very well organized and a lot of fun for all the schools attending. Even though it wasn’t ideal conditions, our team was able to put our heads down and finish with gold. True pleasure is being part of an OFSAA championship team.</p>

<p>For the coaching staff, this championship marks the programme’s third provincial title in seven years, a testament to years of dedication.</p>
<p>“This group has a unique chemistry,” notes Ruta. “They genuinely enjoy competing for each other, not just with each other. There’s a real sense of unity—whether it’s encouraging a teammate after a rough hole or celebrating each other’s successes, they understand that individual scores add up to a team result. They’re also incredibly focused; they came into the season with clear goals and held each other accountable to high standards every step of the way.”</p>
<p>With their most recent OFSAA gold, the golf team now stands alone as the only school to capture three provincial titles (2019, 2024, 2025) in over 20 years.</p>

<p>“Our success has come from consistency—in culture, preparation, and support. We’ve built a programme where expectations are clear: hard work, discipline, and respect come first,” notes Ruta. “We’re fortunate to have strong backing from the school administration, supportive parents, and alumni who help mentor younger players. But most importantly, each new group of student-athletes buys into the idea that they’re part of something bigger than themselves.”</p>

<h1>Hill ’03 Inducted into Wayne State Athletics Hall of Fame</h1>
<p>Congratulations to St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) alumnus Kyle Hill ’03, recently inducted into the Wayne State University (WSU) Athletics Hall of Fame.</p>

<p>“Being inducted into the Wayne State Athletics Hall of Fame is a tremendous honour— it recognizes the hard work and dedication I put in as a student-athlete, both on the field and in the classroom,” says Hill. “This induction isn&#8217;t just about my individual achievements; it&#8217;s a testament to the success of the entire baseball programme during my time.”</p>
<p>Hill enjoyed an incredible four-year pitching career at Wayne State, finishing second in career innings pitched while helping the Warriors win 105 games overall, including 68 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). In 2005, he earned First Team All-GLIAC honours and an American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region First Team selection, leading WSU to a GLIAC title and its first NCAA appearance.</p>
<p>In 2004 and 2007, Hill was named an All-GLIAC Second Team pitcher and was WSU’s top pitcher in 2004 and 2005. Over his career, he tallied 24 wins, matching a 17-year-old WSU record, led the team in wins his first three seasons, and finished third in the GLIAC as a senior with a 2.52 ERA. His 13 starts in 2005 included nine victories and eight complete games, tying him for third in WSU history.</p>
<p>Hill graduated holding the top two single-season strikeout-to-walk ratios, and his career ratio of 3.60 (173 strikeouts to 48 walks) still stands. His 45 career starts set a programme record for 17 years, while his 20 complete games—including a complete-game no-hitter in his first collegiate victory—remain tied for second in WSU history.</p>

<p>Excelling academically, Hill was named a three-time member of the GLIAC All-Academic Team and made the Academic Honour Roll all eight semesters, including five terms on the Athletic Director’s Honour Roll (term GPA 3.5+).</p>
<p>Following his playing career at WSU, Hill transitioned into a graduate assistant coaching role with the Warriors baseball team for two seasons, from 2008 to 2009, while completing his graduate degree.</p>
<p>“That time was invaluable, as it allowed me to stay connected to the game I love while mentoring the next generation of student-athletes,” he recalls. “My time at Wayne State was pivotal for my career, and not just on the baseball field. I earned two degrees: a bachelor&#8217;s in English in 2008 and a master&#8217;s in teaching secondary education in 2010, laying the foundation for my career.”</p>
<p>Hill is currently an account manager at Randstad Canada, a Canadian recruitment and human resources agency.</p>
<p>“The greatest joy of all is my family—my wife, Beatriz, and our son, Nolan, are my greatest inspiration,” he says. “Balancing a career and family life has been a challenge, but it reflects the time management and discipline I learned at both St. Mike&#8217;s and Wayne State. Being a husband and father is by far my most important role.”</p>
<p>During his time at SMCS, Hill spent two years on the honour roll and was an active student-athlete. He played two years of junior hockey and three years of junior baseball, culminating in junior athlete-of-the-year honours. He also spent all five of his years at SMCS competing with the Senior Baseball Team.</p>
<p>“St. Mike&#8217;s prepared me for the academic rigour of Wayne State by instilling a strong work ethic and providing essential skills for university success. I was also prepared for university-level baseball thanks to St. Mike’s emphasis on being a student-athlete. The school&#8217;s philosophy is to educate the whole person, balancing the physical rigour of sports with the intellectual rigour of the classroom. This focus on academics and athletics taught me the discipline required for a demanding university schedule.”</p>
