  <h1>A Closer Look: Odette Library</h1>

  <p>The Odette Library Learning Commons is a dynamic teaching and learning hub where St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) students come to acquire and create knowledge.</p>  

  <p>The 3,400 square-foot space is designed to accommodate collaboration and active learning as well as silent reading and quiet study. The library boasts more than 12,000 circulating print and e-books to compliment the expansive collection of databases and digital resources. Students and faculty enjoy the natural lighting while taking advantage of the soft seating, study cubicles, tables, and seminar rooms. Access to Wi-Fi, printing, photocopying, and technical support services ensure students can successfully complete any task.</p>

  <h1>New Offerings Highlight 2021 SMCS Summer Camps</h1>

  <p>There will be plenty of fresh fare on the menu when the curtain lifts on the 2021 edition of St. Michael&#8217;s College School&#8217;s (SMCS) Summer Camp experience this July. </p>  

  <p>&#8220;We looked at the interests expressed by our students and other young people during the past year and sought to build out programmes that reflected these interests,&#8221; says Stephen Antolin &#8217;05, SMCS Camps Director, referring to a host of new themes.</p>  

  <p>Among the more than one dozen programming options are a handful that will be making their debut this year, including: Digital Photography, Graphic Design, and Backyard Habitat. </p>

  <p><br /> &#8220;Our priority continues to be on offering engaging programming that provides young people with the opportunity to connect and challenge themselves while learning and having fun,&#8221; says Antolin, who also teaches Core Intermediate English at SMCS.</p>

  <p>This year&#8217;s camp experience will be presented exclusively online. As in previous years, SMCS Summer Camps are open to both boys and girls aged 10 years and up, and include themes spanning arts, academics, athletics, and activities. Weekly rates start at $100 per session.</p>  

  <p>&#8220;All our programmes are led by certified teachers who are experts in their given field,&#8221; adds Antolin. &#8220;This ensures that your child&#8217;s social-emotional needs will be well cared for, and that their programme will be engaging, challenging, and fun,&#8221; he says. </p>  

  <p>&#8220;You&#8217;d be amazed at the fun we will have. Not only will you learn a new skill or enhance an existing one, you will make new friends that share your interests, all from the comfort of your own space,&#8221; says Antolin.</p>  

  <p>Having also led individual camp sessions in the past, Antolin says the impact of a summer camp experience for both participants and instructors can yield a host of positives for everyone involved.</p>  

  <p>&#8220;Their energy, when combined with the creativity and efforts of our staff, really result in some incredible learning experiences and unforgettable moments,&#8221; he says.</p>

  <h1>Grade 10 Science At-Home Models: Photos</h1>

  <p>A Grade 10 science project on human organ systems allowed students to get creative building models out of household items while learning at home.</p>

  <p>“The idea came about as the Grade 10 teachers were trying to determine assessments for the block in January, as we were going to be at home and only wanted to have one test,” says Jenna Hilborn, science and biology teacher at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS). “One of us threw out the idea of the students building or creating something to make the assessment more authentic. With a few searches on Google and YouTube, we had discovered that it would be fairly simple for the students to build a model of an organ or organ system from materials around their house. Then we came up with questions for the students to answer in their conversation about their model.”</p>  

  <p>“Students could use any material they found around their house as long as they could make the model function similar to the organ or organ system they chose,” she says. “In the biology unit of Grade 10 science, we study five different systems: respiratory, circulatory, digestive, nervous, and musculoskeletal. From those systems, they could choose to create an entire system, or choose a few organs from a particular system.”</p>  

  <p>Using materials from balloons and fitness bands to straws and water bottles, students built working models to demonstrate and explain the function and purpose of the organ system they chose.</p>  

  <p>“I loved the creativity of the challenge, as I found it to be very fun,” says Grade 10 student Luca Passero, who built part of the digestive system using a water bottle, plastic bag filled with vinegar, and a strawberry covered in baking soda.</p>

  <p>“The way the system functioned was that the strawberry would drop through the esophagus, and pass through the lower esophageal sphincter, into the stomach,” says Passero. “The food would react with the stomach acid, as baking soda and vinegar react with each other to create a foamy reaction. This reaction in the stomach simulated the digestion of food in the stomach acid.”</p>  

  <p>Connor Thompson, Grade 10 student, decided on the musculoskeletal system and built his model out of cardboard, pins, and elastic bands.</p>  

  <p>“I enjoyed the challenge of trying to build something using only what I had lying around,” he says. “My project helped me to get a better understanding of my system by giving me clear knowledge of what each portion of it does and how they act as a whole.”</p>  

  <p>The project was designed as an alternative to the frog dissection that was supposed to occur during the month of school where students were exclusively learning from home.</p>  

  <p>“It allowed students to better understand how the structure of the organs and types of cells involved are related to the function of that organ, as they had to try to use materials from around the house to emulate those organs,” says Hilborn.</p>  

  <p>“What impressed me the most was the boys’ creativity in finding household materials to create their project and how enthusiastic some students were to create something out of random materials found around their house,” she says.</p>

<h1>An Evening with the 1960-61 St. Michael&#8217;s Buzzers and Majors Championship Teams </h1>

<p>It’s been 60 years since St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) capped off one of the most memorable seasons in a much-celebrated hockey history.</p> 

<p>The 1960-61 season ended with an achievement only accomplished twice before (1933-34 and 1944-45) in the school’s history — both the St. Michael’s Majors and Buzzers captured league championships in the same year.</p>  

<p>The Junior ‘B’ Buzzers handily defeated Owen Sound to take home the Sutherland Cup followed by the Majors capturing their fourth and final Memorial Cup.</p>  

<p>Sixty years after the Torontonians lined Bay Street to celebrate these two SMCS hockey championships, a group of former players and special guests are getting set to gather virtually to remember and reunite.</p> 

<p>On Thursday, April 1 at 7 p.m., the next edition of the Alumni Information Series will feature Larry Colle ’69 along with television journalist Steve Paikin, as they relive some SMCS hockey history with a panel of former Buzzers and Majors championship players and special guests.</p>

<p> Paikin is the anchor of ‘The Agenda’ on TVO, co-host of ‘The #OnPoli Podcast’, host, and a hockey enthusiast. He will interview the panel on various topics including championship runs, what it was like to be part of those teams, and more.</p>  

<p>“To commemorate the 60th anniversary of this championship season, and to re-connect with those players and other hockey alumni, we are bringing together an online school community celebration,” says Colle. “We hope to recreate and remember the wonderful feelings and friendships that those special times brought to the St. Michael&#8217;s College School community.”</p>  

<p>The panel will include former players: Kevin Burkett &#8217;62, André Champagne &#8217;62, Gerry Cheevers &#8217;59, Bill Crawford &#8217;61, Dave Draper &#8217;60, Barry MacKenzie &#8217;63, and Terry O&#8217;Malley &#8217;60. Also joining the panel will be special guests EJ Bauer, representing Fr. Bauer &#8217;44, CSB, Dave Keon &#8217;60, OSM, and Ed Sanford ’46.</p>  

<p>“That was a special time in my life as I had just graduated and I was playing for the Maple Leafs,” Keon reflects in preparation for next week’s event. “Fr. Bauer was coaching and the Majors were on their way to winning the Memorial Cup. It was a great time to be a SMCS student.”</p>

<p>Following the livestreamed panel discussion, attendees are invited to participate in a virtual reunion. This part of the evening will be moderated by Colle, as well as Lora Evans, and Paul Patskou, from the Hockey Time Machine Hockey Program. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask the panel their own questions and share personal memories.</p>  

<p>“We are incredibly grateful for Larry Colle and his amazing committee; they have spent the last few weeks organizing this evening,” says Stephanie Nicholls, Alumni &#038; Special Events Officer. “Not only are we fortunate to be joined by alumni who are gathering to retell a special time in our rich hockey history, but also a time for alumni to come together to celebrate the past, whether they played on the team, had a special connection to the players, or simply an interest in the impact of junior hockey at SMCS during that era.”</p>

  <h1>We Applied Past the Deadline: Our Family&#8217;s Story of Ongoing Admissions</h1>

  <p>It was <em>not </em>part of their plan. </p>  

  <p>&#8220;We were going to wait for Grade 9 as his public school is very good,&#8221; says Carolyn, mom of two, describing her family&#8217;s decision to apply to St. Michael&#8217;s College School (SMCS) in late July 2020 &#8212; well <em>after </em>the traditional Admissions period &#8212; and two years earlier than anticipated. </p>  

  <p>&#8220;We weren’t sure he <em>needed </em>a private school education,&#8221; Carolyn continues. &#8220;Neither of us had one, and we turned out just fine…or so we think!&#8221;  </p>

  <p><br /> Four months into the COVID-19 pandemic, the family re-evaluated options for their eldest son who was in Grade 7 at the time. </p>  

  <p>&#8220;With the school shutdowns and online learning, we became concerned about Nate&#8217;s engagement in school and the platform for learning,&#8221; Carolyn says. &#8220;We were hearing that the boys at St. Mike’s were still attending school every day and learning the regular curriculum. Mid-summer, we thought we would give it a try and see if Nate could be squeezed in for the fall.&#8221; </p>  

  <p>With limited research and without applying to any other schools, the family decided to apply to SMCS for Nate&#8217;s Grade 8 year.  </p>  

  <p>&#8220;Since we didn’t apply until the 11th hour, I didn’t have a plan yet, but if he didn’t get in, we would have waited and tried again for Grade 9,&#8221; says Carolyn. &#8221;We were not really interested in any other private schools.&#8221;  </p>

  <p><br /> As their journey unfolded, word of mouth continued to be instrumental in the family&#8217;s decision-making process.  </p>  

  <p>&#8220;He has a few friends who had been accepted for Grade 7, and he was hearing from them how much they loved the school,&#8221; Carolyn adds. &#8221;And we were hearing from their parents how much more engaged their sons were in their studies.&#8221; </p>  <h2>ONGOING ADMISSIONS  </h2>  

  <p>Kim Celotti, Admissions Assistant at SMCS is often the first point of contact for families inquiring about the school &#8212; and especially for those who apply as part of Ongoing Admissions. </p>  

  <p>The most common question Celotti gets asked by these applicants? &#8220;Are we too late to apply? The answer is no,&#8221; she responds. &#8221;As long as we have spots available, we will continue to accept applications.&#8221;  </p>  

  <p>Typically, each year, the Ongoing Admissions cycle at SMCS begins in mid-March. </p>  

  <p>It follows on the heels of the Standard Admissions cycle which concludes every December.  </p>  

  <p>&#8220;The Ongoing Admissions cycle is helpful for families whose circumstances change later in the year &#8212; for instance, a move or a job relocation to Toronto,&#8221; says David Fischer, Director of Admissions at SMCS. </p>

  <p><br /> The pandemic has been another factor impacting <em>when </em>a family may choose to apply.  </p>  

  <p>&#8220;There was a significant increase in interest in Ongoing Admissions because of the robust nature of our <em>Safe at School, Connected at School, Learning at School</em> plan to address COVID 19,&#8221; continues Fischer. &#8220;Families found that this innovative, flexible, and resource-rich plan met the needs of their sons in maintaining educational integrity, consistency, and predictability in the uncertainty created by the pandemic and so interest remained high through the summer months,&#8221; he says. </p>  

  <p>The roll-out and ongoing execution of a hybrid model of instruction at SMCS &#8212; enabled by wide-scale IT enhancements across the school &#8212; continue to be critical. </p>  

  <p>&#8220;With the integration of the classroom technology installed for this year, our teachers are going to be able to leverage that for next year and beyond for the benefit of our students,&#8221; says Chris De Piero &#8217;87, Associate Director of Admissions. &#8220;We have the ability for 2021-22, to either continue with our current hybrid model or return to our regular scheduling.&#8221; </p>  <h2>THE PROCESS</h2>  

  <p>Participating in the application process for Ongoing Admissions meant new learnings for Carolyn and her family. </p>

  <p><br /> &#8220;I had experience from friends, and up front it all sounded very daunting. However, it really turned out very well for our family,&#8221; she says. &#8220;The SSAT exam is probably the most stressful thing, however at the end of the day, this helped bring the seriousness of the school and education to light for our younger son, who just applied for this year.&#8221; </p>  

  <p>Ongoing Admissions at SMCS is officially underway as of March 22, 2021. A bonus offering this year will be the presentation of a Spring Virtual Open House slated for Saturday, April 24 providing prospective families an added opportunity to learn even more about the school. </p>  

  <p>&#8220;The process for submitting an application does not change with the Ongoing Admissions cycle,&#8221; adds De Piero. &#8220;The sooner the file can be completed, the sooner it can be reviewed by our committee to provide a response back to the family.&#8221; he says. </p>  

  <h2>IMMEDIATE IMPACT</h2>  

  <p>As she prepares for her second son&#8217;s entry to SMCS in September 2021, Carolyn reflects on her family&#8217;s quick pivot, decision-making, and journey so far.  </p>  

  <p>&#8220;Often it comes down to the cost and struggling with that end of it,&#8221; she says. &#8220;But at the end of the day, we don’t have them for a lot longer, before they become independent. We just figure this is a wonderful gift to give to our children now.&#8221; </p>

  <p><br /> Carolyn adds, &#8220;We just can&#8217;t imagine <em>not </em>having him at St. Mike&#8217;s. The structure, the fantastic teachers, and the culture. Our son has learned so many things that will impact his education moving forward.&#8221; </p>  

  <p>&#8220;They learn how to study and they have no choice but to manage their time. We are personally enjoying the enthusiasm that Nate has for school (even amidst the pandemic). The academic environment will give them a fantastic edge in university and help them find their way into a career that they enjoy one day,” she says. </p>  

  <h2>QUICK TIPS FOR ONGOING ADMISSIONS APPLICANTS</h2>

    <li>Complete the online application and submit required documentation as soon as possible so that the application file can be reviewed in a timely manner. </li>

    <li>For Grade 7-9 applicants, the SSAT should be arranged as this test date will need to be indicated in the application. Schedule via: <a href="http://www.ssat.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">www.ssat.org</a>. </li>   
    <li>For Grade 10-12 applicants, if accepted during Ongoing Admissions, not all courses may be available. Some specialty courses fill up quickly. </li>  
    <li>Applications for Financial Assistance will continue to be accepted, however, during Ongoing Admissions, there is no guarantee that funds will be available. </li> 
  </ol>

  <p>Call it a &#8216;lunch and learn&#8217; with a slight twist!</p>  

  <p>An informal, virtual conversation over the noon-hour will serve as the backdrop for a new series set to debut this month for current St. Michael&#8217;s College School (SMCS) parents &#8212; featuring the school&#8217;s principal.</p>  

  <p>&#8220;In a year when we have not been able to have many gatherings or events to meet, greet, and share our lived experiences, especially for the good of our young people, this is an opportunity to connect and converse,&#8221; says SMCS Principal James McKinnon. &#8220;PrincipalTalks LIVE is simply an opportunity to connect with the parent community.&#8221;</p>

  <p>&#8220;It seems everything we communicate is by email, Edsby, or regular mail,&#8221; continues McKinnon. &#8220;The concept is born out of our current situation of not having many opportunities to engage at school with parents. The goal is to continue to demonstrate our commitment to transparency, engagement, and communication with our community.&#8221; </p>  

  <p>Current SMCS parents are invited to send any relevant and timely questions about the school upon registering for the event. Participants can also submit questions for Principal McKinnon, via live chat, during the session.</p>  

  <p>&#8220;So much great work goes into providing excellence in learning and student engagement to deliver on Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge,&#8221; says McKinnon. &#8220;We are missing the opportunity to gather the people, break the bread, and share the stories that make belonging to such a terrific learning community special.&#8221;</p>
