 <h1>Dudemaine Commits to Georgetown for 2022</h1>

 Grade 12 student Lucas Dudemaine is getting set to hone his talents in lacrosse at Georgetown University in September 2022. 

 The St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) student-athlete plans to pursue his undergraduate degree at the Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business while playing lacrosse for the Hoyas.

 “The recruiting process was a very exciting time for me,” says Dudemaine. “I was exploring my options and debating which university was the right fit for me. Ultimately my decision came down to the prestige of my degree, the networks the school offered, and the competitiveness of the lacrosse programme. For me in making my decision, Georgetown University filled those boxes the best.” 

 Dudemaine says the school’s focus on international business and its location also influenced his decision. 

 “Undergraduate students have the ability to travel abroad for their signature global programmes which allow them to complete two business courses in prestigious global institutions and consult either within an industry or with specific Fortune 500 companies,” he says. “The location, Washington, DC, was another consideration as it provides unparalleled access to the business, government, policy, and diplomatic communities.” 

 The success of Georgetown University’s lacrosse programme as a Division 1 team and their culture were additional qualities that drew him to the school. 

 “Lacrosse is such a dynamic game,” says Dudemaine who has been playing lacrosse since he was four years old. “There are a lot of things I could say I enjoy, however, the thing I enjoy most about lacrosse is the physicality and pace of the game.” 

 “Lucas is a versatile and athletic player; he’s got the tools to contribute on both sides of the ball and is a slick lefty playmaker,” says Angus Dineley, SMCS teacher and coach of the Blue Gaels lacrosse team. “What has been amazing to watch is how Lucas has developed as a student-athlete throughout his years here. There was never any question in his mind that he would achieve his goal of D1 lacrosse – as a coach you can’t help but love that kind of drive.”

 In terms of preparing and setting goals for his first year at university, Dudemaine understands that it can bring many challenges. 

 “Having goals are a key to success and need to be put in place to hold myself to the standard of a St. Michael’s graduate,” he says. “Some goals include pushing myself in the classroom as hard as I push myself on the field, getting to know my professors, and making as many connections as I can.”

 “As many athletes know, balancing academics and athletics can be difficult, however, if I approach my first year with the mindset that academics are of equal importance to athletics, I will be successful,” adds Dudemaine. 

 “The SMCS experience has prepared me through a challenging six years of balancing academics and athletics,” he says. “The teachers have prepared me for what is to come as it has always been a school-first mindset, in which I learned how to prioritize academics and manage my time effectively to prepare for both in-class and on-field assignments. In addition, the SMCS community has helped me form relationships that will last a lifetime and help me accomplish my goals at Georgetown.”

 <h1>A Closer Look: Science Programme</h1>

 From biology, chemistry, and physics to computer science and engineering technology, the Science Programme at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) offers students a diverse assortment of options across all grades.

 In Grades 7 and 8 students participate in a rich and diverse introduction to a science-based curriculum. This experience helps prepare them for high school-level courses. Together with the Grade 9 and 10 courses, students will have a better understanding of whether the sciences is a path they want to pursue. 

 Working with our Community and Learning Partnerships Programme, faculty coordinate practicums, mentorship events, field trips, and more, to enrich each student’s learning experience at SMCS.

 <h1>Alumni Association Evolves with a Renewed Online Presence</h1>

 With the necessary separation brought on from the global pandemic, alumni well-being has been pushed to the forefront more than ever before.  

 “It’s always been a priority for us, but this past year it became critical for us to play a supporting role for our alumni,” says John P. O’Neill ’86, St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Alumni Association President. “We have taken a few steps already, but with the creativity and support of our diverse alumni network, many additional ideas are now being tabled.”

 Renewed efforts to prioritize alumni well-being in a variety of initiatives took hold last spring with the introduction of the Alumni Information Series. The goal from the start was to provide virtual connections to replace the in-person alumni events. 

 Since March 2020, the Alumni Association has welcomed alumni ranging from the 1950s up to last year’s Class of 2020 to these events, featuring graduates sharing their industry expertise in virtual webinars. A variety of topics put forth by alumni have been presented, from entrepreneurship during a pandemic, to understanding employment law, to tips for staying relevant during a pandemic. The series has generated a lot of interest and fostered lively Q&#038;A conversations. 

 “It was a great start, but what it really did was provide a foundation for us to regularly connect and support each other,” continues O’Neill. “Now the door is open to tailor more of these events to specific elements on alumni well-being such as living a healthy life, interactive webinars, and special interest clubs.”

 For the school’s Alumni Affairs Office, they hope to offer diverse programming to engage alumni of all ages through this series. “We see value in providing more than just reunion and networking-focused initiatives,” says Stephanie Nicholls, Alumni Affairs Officer. “Student well-being has always been a priority at SMCS and so that focus must not be lost when supporting our loyal alumni.” 

 Following the footprint of the information series, the Alumni Association is finalizing a new webinar featuring a panel that will provide health tips to improve lifestyle as an adult. There will be an open discussion on the benefits of changing lifestyles at any age, how to create new habits, the balance of sleep, nutrition, and exercise, what the first change that can be made immediately is, and much more. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer period.

 The focus on well-being will also soon extend to the kitchen where cooking advice and tips will be shared through a live afternoon cooking class with the Foodies Group. Chef Damian Harrington (former student 1986-88) and moderator, Steven Hellmann ’96, the Foodies Group Founder, will interact with attendees as they answer questions and demonstrate how to prepare a delicious Sunday night family dinner in 75 minutes. 

 Shared interest clubs are another way the Alumni Affairs Office at SMCS is working to promote well-being and bring alumni together. An introductory email was sent to the alumni community in early March to gauge alumni interest in a reading club. The interest was overwhelming. Alumni from 1957-2018 have registered to connect over the joy of reading through a book club. Further, this spring, a triathlon club will be launched to promote recreation and healthy living. The triathlon club hopes to have alumni connect via Strava, an athletic app. 

 These are but a few of the initiatives being worked on as the Alumni Association expand their successful online presence and efforts to support the well-being of all alumni. Stay tuned for more sessions, stories, and registration information.

 <h1>Juggling With New Skills</h1>

 A Grade 9 physical education class at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) picked up and tossed around some brand-new skills this year. 

 Geography and health and physical education teacher, Brian Lachcik recently challenged his students to a 20-day juggling challenge where their goal was to build their skills and successfully complete a continuous ‘three-ball cascade,’ a basic juggling pattern. 

 “Given that the block was just over one month long, 20 days would allow the students enough time to learn each step of the process, practice, learn the three-ball cascade, record their routine, add music, and be able to share their videos with their classmates,” says Lachcik. “I thought this idea would be a great way to keep the students active at home during the online learning lockdown. It not only provided the class with a fun and engaging warm-up before completing our ‘Fitness in a Bag’ workouts, but also allowed the students to learn a new skill.”

 The challenge began at the beginning of February, the start of Block Two in the hybrid learning system SMCS is currently using, at a time when students were learning from home full-time due to the public health lockdown orders and school closures in Toronto. When the school opened back up to in-person learning, the class continued with the challenge. 

 “Once all the juggling recordings were submitted, the class took the time to view the video routines of the students who were comfortable sharing, and voted for the top routine in each of the following categories: Funniest Video, Best Athletic Skill Video, Best Edited Video (music, captions, and transitions), and Best Juggling Performance,” says Lachcik.

 “The most challenging part was definitely getting the rhythm down for the three-ball cascade,” says Grade 9 student, Cole Christie. “When first learning it, it was very confusing, and I dropped the balls over and over. It does seem and look much harder than it really is and once I got it down, it was just muscle memory. From there it was easier to learn other three-ball tricks.” 

 “The challenge was a great way to stay coordinated and get in some exercise while having fun,” says Jonathan Morello, Grade 9 student. “What I enjoyed a lot was that it was the whole class together doing the challenge.” 

 “The sport of juggling has been proven to provide physical benefits, mental benefits, emotional benefits, as well as the development of transferable athletic skills,” says Lachcik. The benefits include, improving balance and working the core, increasing heart rate, improving focus and concentration, reducing stress, and developing coordination, spatial awareness, and so much more. 

  “Juggling can also be done at home within small spaces and requires a minimal amount of cost-effective equipment — three juggling items,” he says. 

 In addition to students recording their juggling skills, Lachcik encouraged them to submit videos of themselves practicing other skills as well. 

 “I allowed the students to include their own sport-specific tricks into their routine,” he says. “Hockey and lacrosse skills, soccer and basketball dribbling, only made their video routine even more impressive.” 

 “I find that these types of challenges are extremely effective with my students as it activates the healthy competition between them and their peers, encouraging each other to excel,” says Lachcik. “Also, since juggling is not a common skill, there weren&#8217;t any students who had an advantage over another. All the students basically started off at the same beginner level of the activity, not favoring any one or group of athletes.”

 Morello was one student who had picked up the sport earlier on in the pandemic in March 2020. 

 “All I learned was the three-ball cascade,” he says. “Then I stopped doing it for a while. Now, in only four weeks since the start of this block, I have learned over 15 new three-ball tricks and have become really good at each of them. Well, almost.” 

 For Christie, it was a completely new skill. 

 “I did not know how to juggle at all before this, but I have always wanted to try it,” says Christie. “At the start of our 20-day challenge I was struggling with some of the two ball tricks, and I couldn’t even come close to juggling with three balls. In the end, I was very comfortable with juggling three balls and could do it without dropping them. I even learned some more advanced tricks. I improved a significant amount just within the 20 days.” 

 Both Morello and Christie agree the key to learning how to juggle is to start simple and work through any frustration with practice. 

 “Overall, juggling was a great experience this block and was a great way to build some eye-hand coordination, build some confidence, and have a good time,” says Morello.

 <h1>Alumni Connect to Discuss the Future of Real Estate in Toronto</h1>

 Real estate never ceases to be a popular topic of conversation as witnessed at the most recent Alumni Information Series.  

 The sixth edition of the information series welcomed double its average attendance as featured guests D’Arcy McConvey and Adrian Rocca from the Class of 2000 discussed what the future may hold for this industry.  

 &#8220;Both D&#8217;Arcy and Adrian are big wigs in the real estate world and had a ton of valuable information to share,&#8221; says Ron Scarafile &#8217;05, Alumni Association Executive. &#8220;Whether you were a university student looking to pursue a career in real estate or an investor that is interested in learning about the real estate landscape in the GTA, D&#8217;Arcy and Adrian had you covered. This event was highly informative and the audience was obviously engaged due to the volume of questions that were asked.&#8221;

 McConvey is the current Executive Director of Capital Markets at Greybrook Realty Partners, and Rocca brought his expertise as the CEO of Fitzrovia Real Estate.  

 Joining moderator, Matt Montemurro ‘05, the panelists discussed their views on the current market, how it has performed throughout the pandemic, and how it looks moving forward. They included explanations from understanding the rental market to views on corporate culture. The panelists shared their strategies on how they adapted during the pandemic, and entertained a lively question and answer period.

The Alumni Association has welcomed a variety of panel experts and covered topics from how St. Michael’s College School adapted during a time of online learning to employment law, and tips of staying relevant during a pandemic, among other topics.

 An extensive diversity of professions and portfolios highlighted this year’s presentation of Grade 11 Career Day at St. Michael&#8217;s College School (SMCS) &#8212; the first of its kind held virtually. 

 One keynote and eight other speakers &#8212; all but one of whom were first-time participants &#8212; shared their academic journeys and career trajectories with more than 200 Grade 11 students via Zoom this week.

 &#8220;What struck me was the event in its entirety. I experienced these in university, but not in high school. Having the knowledge/advice of speakers right in time to help them make a decision about their undergrad/post-secondary path is something I wish all students could experience.&#8221; 

 Frank Colella (Business) 

 &#8220;I really appreciated the importance of the inclusion of female panelists. It is often difficult, after spending five years in my case, and six years currently studying in a male-only environment. The more you can expose the kids to the talents of these excellent female examples the better, in my opinion. 

 Thanks for this opportunity as I feel like I gained as much, if not more insight than the kids themselves! Overall this felt like an excellent initiative and huge congratulations to those involved!&#8221; 

 Stewart Campbell &#8217;93 (Business) 

 &#8220;I took part in Career Day 2006 as a student and left with an appreciation for the experts who offered their time to join us that day. Having now been on the other side of things by taking part in Career Day 2021, I was struck by the amount of support offered to the student body at St. Michael&#8217;s. 

 Creating and executing a day like this isn&#8217;t possible without a substantial amount of work and time from the staff and alumni who have collaborated to bring in these speakers to address the group. 

 The experience as a whole affirmed my belief that the St. Michael&#8217;s community and student experience is truly special. These young men are being offered incredible opportunities to hear stories and lessons from people who have walked the path before them. These opportunities can only be made possible by so many people within the St. Michael’s community going above and beyond in creating the chance for these young men to hear from such unique voices.&#8221;

 <h2>What do you hope attendees leave with?</h2> 

 &#8220;I hope that the students leave with a heightened ‘can do attitude&#8217; fueled by all the great presenters’ stories and experiences shared today.&#8221; 

 Mary Dalimonte 

 &#8220;The idea that there are an infinite number of paths one can take; that they don’t have to make a decision between competing interests as there are ways to pursue many in parallel; to continue speaking with folks with first-hand experience so as to inform themselves of their options.&#8221; 

 Frank Colella 

 &#8220;How eager the students were to learn more about careers and how engaged they were! It was nice to see a group of young boys so well-behaved and willing to learn.&#8221; 

 Stefanie Furgiuele (Entrepreneur) 

 &#8220;I really hope the boys leave with a bit of confidence in not knowing what they want to do. This is a strange statement as I reflect on myself being in Grade 11 and surrounded by an impressive cohort of classmates who all seemed to know exactly what they wanted to do. It&#8217;s okay for them to not know today and I hope that we can empower them to be curious and explore a breadth of interests. 

 The second. I really hope that those who do choose to explore a bit more, understand that the pursuit of success as a destination will always be futile. Rather, I hope they understand (or at least start to think about) education as a holistic approach beyond just the grades on a report card. Explore their curiosities beyond the local world they live in every day and dare to dream. Toronto is an amazing city but they do not need to limit their potential to just those options within the GTA whether that be academically or professionally.&#8221; 

 Stewart Campbell 

 &#8220;My hope is that the students left the day with a belief that pursuing a field that ignites their curiosity is extremely attainable. I can recall my time coming through St. Michael&#8217;s and moving on to post-secondary where I&#8217;d see things that interested me and thought, &#8216;Yeah, but what are the chances of that working out,&#8217; despite having an abundance of support from my family, friends, and educators.   With the right mindset and initiative, any of these students can succeed on the path they want. If they left the day with some fresh ideas that energize them or career ideas that spark their interest, that&#8217;s a tremendous success. At such a young age there&#8217;s plenty of room for those ideas to change multiple times as they evolve as men, but when they find a track that captivates them, it becomes a matter of making sure their actions match their ambitions, and I hope what we had to share drove that home.&#8221; 

 Christopher Lund 

 &#8220;I hope that the students leave with the message that very few people know exactly what they want to be. So, make a list of a bunch of things, do not allow failure to discourage you. Be curious and explore so that in the end you have lived a rich, full life. If you are one of the lucky ones and you happen to find success at first, it may not last. Just look at the number of young celebrities and athletes. The journey is the reward so keep learning and finding value in the exploration. 

 And when it comes to failures and hardships: Bad things happen &#8211; you can either allow them to define you, strengthen you, or destroy you… but you have that choice. Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever could. So, make that list and run them down… don’t wait to make that bucket list.&#8221; 

 Fernando Chien &#8217;93 (Actor) 

 &#8220;This day reinforces the message that resiliency and perseverance are keys to success. The speakers expressed that they arrived at their destinations in mostly unconventional ways&#8230; some have yet to arrive!&#8221;

 <h2> What would you tell your Grade 11 self about career or academic future-planning?</h2> 

 &#8220;I would tell myself to enjoy the high school experience more. Not apply so much pressure on trying to figure out what I wanted to do in the future, however, divert the career planning energy into driving the best results achievable in performance and academics.&#8221; 

 Mary Dalimonte 

 &#8220;To stop forcing myself to ‘make a decision’ about my path; cast a wide net; explore all of your interests. Finally, relax — you won’t have all the answers about where you want to be, and that’s likely the case for most people.&#8221; 

 Frank Colella 

 &#8220;I would tell my Grade 11 self that you absolutely can make a career out of art and to stop being so hard on yourself. Also, don’t compare yourselves to your peers and what their future plans are.&#8221; 

 Stefanie Furgiuele 

 &#8220;I would really focus on using things like scholarships associated with extra-curricular (hockey in my case) as a vehicle to experience schools and travel to places that I would never have the opportunity to see rather than as the path to the NHL. This would be supported by the realization of my previous reflection in that education is balanced between formal academics and experiences.&#8221; 

 Stewart Campbell 

 &#8220;If I could sit down with my Grade 11 self, I&#8217;d tell him to not be afraid of friction or failure, but rather welcome it as an opportunity to grow. It&#8217;s easier said than done, but thinking back to when I was at that age I&#8217;d get very frustrated with myself when things didn&#8217;t come easily or go the way I want. For better or worse, I was — and still am — a perfectionist.   With some more experience under my belt and the opportunity to reflect, I&#8217;ve realized that my most important lessons learned and biggest growth has come from times when I was pushed to my limit — physically or intellectually — or failed to accomplish what I wanted off the hop. I can point to mistakes I&#8217;ve made professionally or personally that brought about new perspectives and approaches to ensure that I avoid them in the future and continue to grow.   If I take a step back, I know if I had encountered friends in similar positions to where I struggled, I&#8217;d have offered them empathy and encouragement to keep pushing and stay on the path. It&#8217;s important to offer that same empathy and positivity to yourself for long-term growth and success.&#8221; 

 Christopher Lund 

 &#8220;Find value in what you do every day and not in the approval of others. At the end of the day if you can look yourself in the face and say, ‘I have done everything I could today to move the needle forward on those things I am interested in,’ then you’ve done your job and look towards tomorrow. The &#8216;compound effect&#8217; is to look for improvement every day regardless of how big or small. In every field I have encountered this is a resonating theme, that is doing a little bit every day is better than doing a lot once in a blue moon. This applies to learning, reading, relationships, any skill, investing, and finance etc.

 Any dream is possible if you are willing to work for it. God has given you everything you need. You are enough.&#8221;
